Pony Corral / Re: Post your space themed ponies!

Gotta love space themed ponies!  A good portion of my collection are themed that way as I often find their color/symbol combos pleasing.

Here's the Nightglider with a re-haired forelock from the far right of Rainbowrific Renia's picture (bought her last year).

A childhood pony for me, I think they're charming even with the fuzzy lashes.  I thought they were neat when I was little.

Hm... lets see...

Childhood herd (currently stored):

5 Fakies (2 Fashion Star Fillies, 3 Enchanted Kingdom Horses)
1 Dream Beauty
27 Petites

Total:  65

Current Collection:

9 G1 Brushable (Adults, Sweetheart Sister, and Sea Pony)
5 G3 Brushable
1 G4 Brushable
29 G4 Blind Bags
12 Fakies

A lot more than I would have thought, those little guys add up quick!  I've been considering downsizing though...

Pony Corral / Re: Let's Talk About Your Pony Collection!
« on: August 21, 2016, 10:23:37 PM »
-Do you collect all products or just a specific variety/generation?

I have my childhood collection of G1, a bit more G1 I've collected as an adult, a couple G3s, and a few G4.  I also have a few fakies I found charming.  My collection overall is quite spesific and small, consisting of fewer than 50 ponies overall and including that the majority of that count are G4 blind bags (because they are small and easy to display).

-What sort of lines of pony products do you collect?

I really just prefer the ponies, both brushable size, and petite or blind bag if you prefer.  I do like to complete them with their accessories, although I'm not that picky about it.  I have a few G1 playsets from my childhood but they (along with my childhood heard) are currently stored and I don't know if I might part with them some day.  While I do find some other merchandise charming, I don't really care to collect and store that sort of thing.

-Is there a specific pony or ponies you have an army/armies of?

Not really my taste, I prefer just the few ponies I really like the look of, one of each is just fine, and I'm not fussy that it be the best example, just so long as they look nice.

-What do you find to be easy/challenging about collecting ponies

Getting the ponies I wanted was fairly easy, keeping to a limited number and not turning into a completionist is harder.

-What tips would you offer people starting their pony collections?

Personally I really prefer to focus on just the things I love, not worry on completion or buying every pony I see.  I think it can be really important to find what you love in collecting and embrace it.  It's really different things for different people, but the most important thing is that is fun and not a point of stress.

Also if you are going big, do consider documenting everything for insurance purposes if needed.

Pony Corral / Re: Tail ribbons on brushables

Gaaahhh I know exactly how I lost the ones that go with my childhood MLPs (I would use them to hold braids or what have you with styling them as a wee kidlett), they were in a basket full of ribbons that my mom used to do my hair up as a kid, and when I started wearing ponytail holders instead that basket went away, they were all in there (not that they were used in my hair, but all the ribbons were together).  Drives me nuts since I can be a bit of a completionist about accessories.

I wasn't really hard on my toys as a kid, and was generally pretty careful.  Still, at some point Spritzy (Dream Beauty) got dropped and one of her legs snapped (I think she may have fallen off a shelf, I'm not sure).  She was a tripod for a long time as Dad couldn't really find a strong enough glue to hold up to a 6 year old playing with things (but therefore she became grizzled and wise a queen amongst ponies... at least to a child).  I have glued her back together since finding her leg in a box of other childhood things:

It's discolored with resin, but I'm not sure there's much to be done about it.  I don't really mind.

Yay finally I get to contribute to the very pretty re-hairs here!

I was sent a Goldilocks with fried hair (someone had taken a crimping iron to her, and her body was full of rust which was even showing in the roots of her mane) and went this direction with her:

As you can see I decided to "Rapunzel" her.  As the two are both fairy-tale mail-order ponies it seemed appropriate to give Goldilocks a little more pizazz.  She has been re-haired in Dollyhair Golden Delicious, Mango Tango (which both match her original colors well) and Mulberry Crush as well as Lavender holographic floss from Sulky.  The clip is MLP but G3, since it's what I had on hand.

Pony Corral / Re: G1 pony hair: best hair of the 80s?

I think a big reason for the difference overall is MLP uses really a very nice quality of Nylon.  Barbie is generally saran - a fiber which looks more like human hair, but behaves very poorly under stress (personally, I don't care for the feel of it).  If I'm not mistaken it's also cheaper to produce than Nylon.  Monster high dolls are sometimes Nylon and sometimes Saran, this can be a problem as the saran is destroyed by acetone (nylon is not) and if you want to shrink their heads, you have to re-hair the saran haired ones completely first.  I think it's a point of production and a question of color for why the dolls vary.

Other fibers used for doll hair include Acetate, which feels nice, and quite like very clean human hair, but is very fragile.  Polypropylene, which styles like nylon but feels more like saran.  Kanekalon, which sucks on toast (for doll use!) unless it's a high quality wig grade, as it's really meant to mimic human hair.  There's also some novelty fibers out there, things that change colors or glow, and those of us that know our MLP know how much those vary in quality over time!

Love her!  I think she's just darling.  I have both her and Seashell as the pair of them seem to go together as a set to me (I guess just being the pose oddballs they are).

I think the sitting and rearing poses are really cute, and there just aren't that many ponies in either (I know it's since they didn't suit the market).  I doubt I would ever have a pose army unless I liked every pony's coloration, symbol, etc.  I just think they're really lively and I like the variation from the norm with them!

Oh... and I was thinking the other day that the Baby Glory Pose really just... has something very perfectly darling to it to my eye.  Very sweet and cute.

Oh SWEET!  I got the flocked ones (they're super adorable).  I might have to get those transparent ones too!

Thank you thank you for finding this out!

Edit: Oh goodness I'm missing a flocked one (ice)!  Guess Aliexpress didn't have the whole set!

Pretty sure it was Baby Beach Ball (though I may have gotten some petite ponies after that):

We didn't often shop at Toys R' Us, mum found it loud, overpriced, and obnoxious (as an adult, I don't blame her, and I know money was tight in my family at the time, my parents having just recently started their own buisness), but I had a gift card I think (a birthday present), and she was a clearance, probably a leftover from a year or two before when she was released.  I got her with some other goodies, I seem to recall about a dozen of her being on the shelf and not really many (if any) others.  I don't recall seeing any more G1s after that on the shelves, and moved on to collecting Grand Champions.  When G2 rolled around I fell into that age group that's just a bit too old for them, but too young yet for nostalgia.

One of my childhood ponies.  I quite liked her because she did something.  I really liked a lot of the more novel ponies for that reason.

Cute, though not particularly a favorite:

One of my childhood ponies!  I loved the sweetheart sisters as a kid (I think maybe because their proportions made me think of real horses?  I'm not sure).  Anywho:

Her hair is a little frizzed because it's still in the factory curl and I've never been quite sure if I want to do anything about that.
