Pony Corral / EQG Dolls in Australia
« on: September 26, 2013, 08:33:29 PM »
I went for a walk around my local shops a few days earlier, and Equestria Girls dolls have finally started hitting the shelves down under. I found the deluxe versions of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, as well as the Doll & Pony sets with Celestia and Twilight Sparkle, all in Toys R Us for $30 each. Then, in K-Mart, I saw the basic dolls for Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Twilight Sparkle for $20 each. There were only two of each basic doll on the shelf, so they might be packed in cases of eight. In TRU, there were three each of the deluxe FS/RD dolls, and about four each of the Doll & Pony sets. If any other Aussie EQG fans have been waiting as impatiently as I have, now is the time to start looking!

I picked up one each of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. One of the Fluttershy dolls on the shelves seemed to be missing her flower bracelet accessory, so I picked up one that I saw had one on her wrist. Then when I was unpacking her, there was something rattling around the bottom of the package. It was... another flower bracelet?! My Fluttershy must be a flower thief, stealing a bracelet from the doll that was missing one!

The flowers are mine, all mine! Yay!

It seems that the only difference between the American release and the Australian release of these dolls is that we don't get the stickers or the pamphlet included with the club card.

Putting the unrelated info under a spoiler, no longer relevant.

Spoiler
Dash is still in her packaging, as I was distracted halfway through unpacking by what I think may be another error in my Fluttershy doll. Does anyone else have a Fluttershy with some red plugs rooted at the base of her hair? I've been looking at photos online but can't see any colour variations. She has two red plugs on the right and one on the left side of her head. One of the red plugs is also the same length as her longer "tail" piece of pink hair, despite being rooted nowhere near the tail. A multitude of pictures taken during pony doll spa time:

She shed a lot of hair during combing, including a big hunk of red.

One on the left.

My camera had a little trouble photographing the colour difference nicely, so I looped a red plug over the pink.

Long red plug is looooong.

What does everyone think? Have you seen any Fluttershy dolls with red hair like this?

Oh my gosh, she looks so wonderful. The soft fuzzy fabric and chubby, squishy proportions really suit her. And it looks like she has longer hair than any of the BaB ponies released so far? Now I can't wait for November!!! <3

Looks like I might start stalking the BAB around November then! I have the Spike but didn't want RD or Twilight as cute as they are (the straightened mane looks awesome by the way!)

Do they still make you jump up and down and recite that poem thing?

Ha ha ha! No jumping required, but I did the actions with the little heart - rub it on your nose so it "knows" you, give it a kiss for love, close your eyes and make a wish, etc.

Thanks and to everyone asking about hair styling, it was pretty simple. I boiled a kettle of water, let it rest for a minute, and then poured it over her hair about an inch away from the roots so that the body wouldn't get wet. Liberally apply conditioner, comb through to remove tangles (there were a couple of snagged/looped hairs that had both ends sewn inside the plush that I had to cut at the middle) and let the conditioner soak in for a few minutes. Pour more boiled water over if some areas aren't straightened enough and recondition. Then rinse with cool water, pat/scrunch off the excess water with a towel and leave to dry. (This is the same basic method I use for straightening the hair on my G4 brushables.) The BaB hair strands are pretty thick and heavy, so they tend to weigh themselves down and help it to dry stick-straight.

Her hair isn't perfectly straight upon close observation as there are a small number of strands which are coarse/frizzy/kinky by nature, but she looks nice on display. I'm very happy with her as of now and not willing to try flat ironing or other methods. ^.^

Pony Corral / Build-a-Bear Fluttershy coming in November
« on: September 21, 2013, 02:25:35 PM »
Yesterday I went on a Build-a-Bear adventure hoping to pick up some ponies. The first store I went to had Rainbow Dash, so I got her. I asked the guy who helped me stuff her if they had any Twilight Sparkle left, but he checked and the answer was no. He asked me if I got "the pink one", and I said no, I missed out, but I'd heard that she would be coming back soon? He said yes! Along with "the yellow one". Well now, who could that be? I also picked up Rainbow Dash's cape and Pinkie Pie's cape before leaving (odd that they would have her dress but not the pony, I guess it was left over stock?).

Hoping that the other BaB store that is within my range would have Twilight Sparkle, we drove on. Unfortunately, they didn't have her either. The lady at the desk told me that Twilight is completely sold out Australia-wide! And she had just sold her last Spike the Dragon plush earlier that morning. I did pick up Twilight Sparkle's cape, and as she was ringing it up she asked if I was interested in more ponies, and said that Fluttershy would be coming out in mid-November. She used the name "Fluttershy" with no hesitation so that really confirmed it for me.

I guess I can't leave this post without some pictures of my new friend (with newly straightened hair that was still a bit damp).

And with an old friend, too. I ordered Spike the Dragon off the BaB website so he should be along later in the post. I guess I'll have to wait until Twilight is rereleased though. Dash has had two releases now and Pinkie seems set for her second, so I don't doubt that Twilight will return sometime. ^.^

Jumping on the creepy BBE wagon but I'm going to specify Baby Ribbon. Ugly neon mane on an ugly blue coloured body, seemingly mismatched delicate flowing white ribbon for a symbol, clashing colours all over the place. You think you can forget about it, but then you spot one out of the corner of your eye on ebay... splotched with ink stains... a wild neon green birdnest for hair... rusty, wonky eyes... did she just blink at me?! EEK! I wouldn't like to be confronted with one of them in a darkened hallway.

Pony Corral / Re: My Little Pony Mystery Minis (Funko)
« on: September 20, 2013, 05:49:13 PM »
Wow those are really cute...though, I wonder why Muffins/Bubbles gets 2 figures and poor AJ, Rarity and Twilight don't get one at all?  Admittedly Twilight has a lot of merchandise already but AJ and Rarity aren't so oversaturated.
These figures seem to be miniature versions of the vinyl figures already released/announced. Rainbow Dash and Muffins for wave one, Fluttershy and Dr Whooves for wave two, Pinkie Pie and Lyra for wave three, Spitfire and Sweetie Drops for wave four (just released), and DJ Pon-3 and Octavia must be the next wave (only prototypes of them have been seen thus far).

Funko reps have stated that they plan to release the whole mane six eventually, so in the future when there are more vinyl figure waves released, perhaps there will be another accompanying line of minis for them. Don't give up hope on mini-AJ, she might make an appearance eventually!

Pony Corral / Re: Typical weight for a Funko vinyl?
« on: September 18, 2013, 12:19:53 AM »
Due to her huge mane and tail, I think that Fluttershy is the heaviest Funko released so far. I took a quick weigh-in (on regular kitchen scales, not a precision scale, so it may vary) and she's clocked at 300g / 0.66 lbs / 10.58 ounces loose with no packaging. I hope this helps you. (:

Wow, what a fantastic collection! I love the way every building and vehicles has ponies and accessories in/around it, it makes the whole room look like a busy little world full of live ponies. You even have the orange version of Rarity's Gem Carriage! Can I ask where/how you got it? It's one of my G4 "grails", so exciting to see one out in the wild with some ponies riding in it!

Pony Corral / Re: Ideas for the G4 Line

Personally, I'd love to see more playsets and characters that tie-in with the interesting areas and themes of the show, particularly BUILDINGS! As in, somewhere with actual rooms that ponies can inhabit, not just little accessory packs and the occasional plastic forefront. Golden Oak Library, Fluttershy's forest cottage, Dash's rainbow cloud palace, a more expansive version of Applejack's barn, etc.

How about a Big Mac brushable that comes with a toy haywagon big enough for baby ponies to ride on, just like in Pinkie Pie's Smile Song, but also harkening back to the G1 baby buggies/strollers.

(This got a bit long so I'll pack away the more ranty pieces...)

Spoiler
I would also love to see themed brushable packs that contain 2-4 original character designs with NO rereleases of the main 12 (mane six, CMC, princesses) if at all possible. How about "Gardening Fun" with Roseluck, Flower Wishes and Daisy Dreams. Adventures in Appleloosa with Braeburn and Little Strongheart. Cloud Races with - heck, pick any pegasi, there have been dozens of great designs in different flight scenes. An Apple Family Reunion pack. A High Class Society pack with Fancy Pants, Fleur, etc.

Blind bags seem to be Hasbro's chosen arena for show accuracy and interesting themes, which really annoys me, because single BBs are $4 here and the themed multipacks are anywhere from $15-$20. I'm not keen on spending that much money for tiny solid figures. And the collections of brushables coming out are interesting, but always seem to contain at least three doubles of old characters, pushing the number of ponies included to almost ridiculous heights! I don't want eight brushies of which only 2-3 are new.

In short, I would like frequent releases of small groups of interesting ponies. Like the early waves of the single pack brushables - they contained 2 Earthies, 2 Unis, and 2 Pegasi, all original designs and in small numbers. That was the highest point of the FiM toyline for me. Honeybuzz, Plumsweet, et al were colorful, fresh faces that drew the eye and pulled the wallet along with it!

Pony Corral / Re: Why Dolls?
« on: August 27, 2013, 04:31:15 PM »
I'm not 100% sure and I don't have any links, but I thought somebody asked this question once and got a reply? Which was along the lines of "Hasbro looked at a lot of the fanart drawn for FiM to get ideas on what concepts are popular, and noticed that tons of fans drew humanised versions of the ponies." So they thought a humanised spinoff would be popular among the G4/brony fans, probably in addition to hooking little girls with the fashion doll line.

Unfortunately, a humanised spinoff probably WOULD have been very popular, if they didn't make them half-animal-colored-skin-with-ears-and-tail "humans", and didn't strip the characters of their personality and everything that made them unique. Equestria Girls is acceptable as it is, but it could have been something really great if they put a smidgen more common sense and effort into the adaptation.

Pony Corral / Re: Will Fashion Style Applejack be rereleased?
« on: August 22, 2013, 02:50:26 PM »
Definitely not the EXACT same Applejack - the bangs/forelock hairstyle was retired pretty quickly after 2010, so they would either have to cast a new head mold (unlikely, because money) or put a different earth head on her to make her have the standard two parallel rows of hair.

Perhaps if she does get a rerelease they will give her Pinkie's head and just stamp the different shaped eyes over the indentation. So if you're put off by the lingering eye shapes on ponies such as Shadowbolt Dash and Lyrica Lilac, perhaps don't get too hyped for a rerelease AJ as her eyes may look a little funny? That's just my assumption on how Hasbro is likely to negotiate the difference, though.

Pony Corral / Re: Gem eyes Cadence

From what I've seen on shelves and in photos, Cadence's Crystal Empire releases are as follows:

Princess Pack with AJ (round eye shine, tinsel hair)
Crystal Princess Ponies Collection (round eye shine, tinsel hair, glitter on horn/wings)
Crystal Jewel Salon with Twilight (hexagon/gem eye shine, tinsel hair)

Hope that helps you. (:

I think the FiM episode "Too Many Pinkie Pies" was foreshadowing the fact that there really are a lot of her around. 21 slightly different brushable ponies by my count, plus the molded version from the 2010 gift set, and then the multitude of plushies, blind bags, merchandise, etc... We're being overrun! I "only" have 10 brushable versions and it's already a bit of a wow factor.

At least for the Equestria Girls doll line, Rainbow Dash seems to be the go-to girl for multiple releases, with three or four releases cropped up already, and only one Pinkie doll.

Pony Corral / Talking Nightmare Moon in Australia + funny factory error
« on: August 07, 2013, 10:57:54 PM »
I've just visited my local TRU here in Melbourne, and what a pleasant surprise! Talking Nightmare Moon is in stock! There was no price label on the shelf but when I bought her, she scanned at $39.99

To my knowledge, this is the first "Collector Series" pony to reach our shelves, even though she doesn't have the little green sticker on her packaging (the box doesn't say TRU exclusive, but I think she probably still is). Shadowbolts Rainbow Dash and the Favorites Collection feat. Queen Chrysalis are advertised on the back, so fingers crossed that they will come here as well.

On the shelf below all the Nightmares, there was the usual Friendship Express Trainset.

But wait, who is that in the driver's cab?

It's Twilight Sparkle! The raised leg version that's supposed to come with the deluxe Around Town Trainset, in fact.

I guess whichever quality control employee who saw that thought "ehh, I don't want to send a whole set back... I'll just stick some yellow paper on to cover the words Pinkie Pie. Problem solved, ship it out!" It gave me a good laugh, at least.
