Pony Corral / Re: Sanding off mold spots... Help me, please... T_T

No, that won't be the end of it.

Bad storage conditions will speed up the process, but no matter where you keep your collection, plastic deteriorates.  High heat and humidity just makes it worse.  Adding more chemicals (including paint) can also make it worse.

Honestly the best thing you can do is just leave them be - there's a common theme in the museum conservation field - do as little as possible, entropy always wins in the end.  G1's are 30+ years old in many cases and they're going to look it, considering they were made as children's toys and not expected to last forever.

But if these are in fact mold colonies (rather than just aging vinyl), shouldn't the deterioration stop if I've disinfected/sterilized/killed the mold with vinegar or another antibacterial? I thought once the mold was dead, it was just a matter of removing or hiding the stain?

So... I soaked the mold spots in white vinegar. Should the fungus be dead now? Can I just paint over it and be sure it won't spread?

This is an EXCELLENT information on mold spots here:   http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/body.html#Cancer

I met the girl who gathered this information recently and the whole site is fantastic.   But one thing to note is the last paragraph about the spreading of mold spots. It's not contagious, like going from one pony to another. It's more about what kind of environment these are kept in.   Heat and humidity are big triggers.  So painting a dead mold spot probably won't help if the pony is still kept in a bad environment.

Thanks for the info! I had read that page before--I've restored a lot of dolls with mold, but those were human dolls with pale skin colors. The colorful ponies had me stumped. :/

None of my ponies have developed mold while in MY possession. They all came to me that way. I'm excessively careful about the environment I keep my toys in, for this very reason. So I guess that's good news, right? ^^; I can just paint over the spots and that will be the end of it?

Hmm... :/ Well, that stinks. I did find this article: http://www.mlptp.net/index.php?threads/possible-restore-or-removal-of-pony-cancer.96574/

They managed to sand deep enough to remove the mold, but afterward had to fill in large dimples in the plastic... Not a perfect solution, but I guess in a desperate situation...

I've been trying to remove some nasty mold spots from a few of my G1 ponies... It's that icky brown spotting that I think is referred to as "pony cancer".

Anyway, I'm trying to avoid RemoveZit, since these ponies are blue, pink, etc., and I don't want bleaching to occur. I heard that mold spots can be sanded off, but I'm not having any luck. How much sanding does it take to get past the mold!? Is there a better technique for this? Please help!

Id be interested in them lol but I dont have anything to trade for, sorry. Im not much of a breeder, so no IV or hidden abilities here :P But Im always open for new friends, so if youre interested you can surely add me! My friend code is 4742 - 9657 - 9957 (my safari type is normal, I have Ditto, Teddiursa and Minccino !)

Whoa, you have a Ditto safari!? *_* That's the exact one I've been seeking forever! Eeeeeeee! I would love to swap friend codes, mine is: 1220-6744-1769

I think it's flying type, but I can't remember the exact Pokemon... ^^;

And if you don't have much to trade, that's fine! Since we're from different countries, I'd just be happy to have a few Pokemon for the Masuda method. ^_^ Especially Dittos of various natures (Adamant, Timid, Modest, Sassy, Quiet are best)! I also need a Turtonator and a Passimian... I'm paranoid about using wonder trade or GTS because I'm avoiding hacked 'mons like the plague. O_O For those things, I can trade you any number of favorites like Prankster Sableye or Regenerator Mareanie (all with some IVs), or some of my perfect/near-perfect IVs Pokemon. ^_^

Pony Corral / Re: Letting go of childhood herd?

But why do you WANT to let them go? Three isn't many, so it's not a space issue... You sound very conflicted about it... There's nothing wrong with holding onto your favorite childhood toys--everyone I know has at least a few of their old dolls or such around the house. Someday, you may even want to share them with your children or grandchildren (I loved seeing my mother's old toys when I was a child--they fascinated me). They will always be special, because you can say "I played with these when I was your age!".

Personally, I could never let go of my childhood ponies. They may not be in mint condition, but they remain my favorites out of my entire collection. <3

Anyone still playing? :) I do! Still working on my dex <3

I am! ^_^ Also, is anyone interested in trading? I have a ton of Pokemon with hidden abilities and IVs. :3

Magic Eraser is just a fine sandpaper, it WILL take off paint if you are aggressive enough with it.
I'd go with a toothbrush and soap to start with, work up from there.  Alas I have no raptors to spare, rather attached to all my dinos.  Many of these recolours I haven't seen before!

Ooh, hadn't thought of that... :/ Yeah, I guess if the paint is prone to chipping, that's best saved as a last resort. Good to know! I've mostly used Magic Erasers on solid colors, so I wasn't aware of how corrosive they could be to paint...

And yeah, I never knew how many raptor variants there were! I'm loving that last one in the second pic!

These are really adorable... If I pass them in a store, there's no way I'll be able to leave without one. XD

So, the eggshells... Are they just packaging, basically? Are they meant to be tossed once you've "hatched" them? Are they crumbly? :wonder:

That electric blue one in the first photo was a treasured childhood toy of mine--I still keep her in my room amongst the "favorites". XD

Good hunting!
That's one of my top ones Im hunting for haha, but for real her colors are amazing!

She really does stand out from the others! That's probably why I picked her out, back when I was four years old. X3 I hope you can find one of your own! :)

These toys bring back so many memories... X3
She does!!!
I just won a bid for one on eBay. Though the owner colored on her with red marker. Seeing if I can clean her up when I get her.

Ooh, congrats! I would try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser--those things are amazing for getting marker out of plastic. I always use them on my "fixer-upper" items. ^^

I'm kinda worried magic erasers will tear off the paint. Searching through ebay I found a lot of this raptor with chipped paint. I'm thinking toothbrush and soap.

Hmm... I'm usually more afraid of a toothbrush, but that probably depends on what kind of plastic you're dealing with. I might just try a rinse with some Dawn first, and see if that clears any marker out of the crevices... Some marker stains come out really easily with just running water and soap!

Mine is still very minty, and has a sort of gloss to her, so I'm surprised that so many on the used market have paint wear--it looked rather well-sealed. :(

I'm really enjoying hearing about everyone's collecting philosophies! ^_^ I tend to be more relaxed with my MLP collection, and it's nice to know I'm in good company. X3

The most important thing is to know what's makes you happy in collecting and enjoying your ponies fully!!

QFT! :)
