Cool!!! :D Poor Rarity... but cool!!

Curious... can you tell what shape her eyes are? (underneath the paint that is). I mean... they shouldn't match. The head should be a Pinkie Pie or Applejack hair right? So the sculpted shape of the eyes... shouldn't be almond shaped...

Bizarre!!! I wonder how many Rarities made it out of the factory like that!

Hey good analysis there! Indeed it isn't a Rarity head. It's a "Pinkie Pie" head, but I guess the closest match would be a Plumsweet with Raritys eyes painted over it. Even in real life, it still looks very convincing though. The pupil and iris fill snugly into the eye contour, so you wouldn't think it was a mistake if you didn't know Rarity is supposed to be a unicorn. ^^ Pretty awesome find IMO. She was the only Rarity left on the shelf, so I wasn't sure if it was a batch thing or a one-off stray.

I find it's more satisfying to find an error in package rather than Taobao, since some of those on Taobao seemed almost intention to make some bucks, but this one obviously escaped QC. What I like is that she not just some pony with her symbol forgotten or a wrong tail - yer know the easy stuff that people can replicate at home without much effort. This one at least take some level of difficulty because unless you can paint like a machine in gradient, Rarity's eyes are one of the most complex to paint from scratch.

I'm still waiting for the day when I find an error where Hasbro accidentally paints symbols on both sides of the pony!!! That would be a dream.....

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my Rarity?   I found her in TRU over the weekend. I just had to snap her up for the freak factor.

If that machine ever prints multi-colour I'll be making so many G1s as G4s. lol

Pony Corral / Re: So, which pony changed your mind?

I was just having a glance at my ponies, and my gaze momentarily rested upon G1 Cotton Candy. So pink. So simple... (even really common as far as ponies go) and gosh I love her!

I agree. It's the simpler looking ponies that I find so easy to look at, and they unclutter my mind better than the supposedly well-designed ones. My favourite is probably Majesty. Her scheme never fails for me.

I chose option 2, because in Singapore shops want to charge you $10 for a dingy pony, so unless I need it badly or it's slightly htf, I'll probably give it a miss. For Cool Breeze, sure, I'll rescue her, try to restore and find her a new home. If it's Peachy or Sundance, I'll say sorry and goodbye.

HTF ponies definitely look sadder than common ponies, which is why I prefer to rescue them. lol

Pony Corral / Re: G2 gender difference

The first year G2s were released they were manufactured by Kenner, who was owned by Hasbro or something. When Kenner tanked, Hasbro went back to two rows of hair. This is unless I remember incorrectly.

I don't think Kenner ever tanked since it was bought out by Hasbro. Describing them as being fully absorbed or integrated is probably more accurate. Hasbro did that to get dibs on some of the brands Kenner had access to like Littlest Petshop and Care Bears, but Care Bears weren't Kenner's core creations, so eventualy lost rights to produce them. I guess Kenner was having a bit of trouble, and Hasbro was more than happy to buy out a competitor with some significant brands they can leverage on.

I think there was some politics involved during the takeover, and Hasbro assigned Kenner a low priority brand to keep the Kenner staff busy, and of course they weren't too happy about it, and completely screwed Hasbro over, hence why G2 look the way they look. lol Of course, the ponies found fans over the years, but I do think in the initial years, they were quite clearly hated for being MLPs. If I recalled properly I think I heard from some Hasbro staff that by the end of 1998, most of the Kenner staff who worked on MLP left the company... so oh well I guess that was why the MLPs were cancelled in 1998 in the USA under the excuse that Hasbro had to cancel the G2s due to extreme unpopularity. Probably an ugly blemish in Hasbro history that they never want to remember or talk about ever again (lol), probably also why Hasbro had conveniently left out the G2s out of the MLP Timeline in 2008 when they were presenting the history of MLP for their 25th Anniversary at the MLP Fair. One lady claimed it was an oversight on their part but I personally think it's more than meets the eye! :D

Anyway I was all there when the G2s first came out. They were slated for an early1998 release, but were already available by mid 1997. The first batch of releases all had 1 row of hair, the 2 rows of hair only kicked in about 2-3 months down the road, so I guess you can say it's a batch difference. I would definitely say the 1 row haired G2s are the earliest poineer batch of ponies.

As for Cupcake having a magnet is because she was meant to be a gimmicky pony. The G2s had 4 distinct catergories when they first came out.

-  Secret Surprise Friends - these are our "single" normal ponies, and they just come with small accessory pieces to fit their character. The ponies are plain and do nada except turning their heads, but their cool accessories more than make-up for it.

- Magic Motion Ponies - gimmicky mini playset ponies. They come with larger pieces of accesories almost equivalent to a mini playset, and the ponies have an action figure selling point to them, so they all can do some kind of "action" trick. Like swishing their tails, kicking their leg or magnets that "pick" things up or perform "magic".

- Themed mini playset ponies - These are actual smaller playsets like Light Heart with bed, Ivy's Pretty Parlour and Dainty Dove with wedding chapel. They normally open to play a scene and pack up to be sort of a clever carry case for 1 pony.

- Large playsets - heavy weight stuff like castles or the forest playset...etc

Sweetcream Scoops is at the top of my list. Would love to see a melon green unicorn! Don't mind having Lemon Hearts or Firecracker Burst too.

I do agree the G2s had some of the more interesting playsets, especially the mini on-the-go ones.

As for Ivy's Parlour, it wasn't as original as it was cut out to be. It was actually a modified G1 Parlour and you can tell from the mold that it's similar to the one that Peachy came with.

Also for the G2 Garden Carrying Playset, it was a modified G1 Littlest Petshop Carry case because Hasbro just acquired Kenner then and they were cross using stuff to save on design cost I guess.

Personally, I'm tired of the G3 clone pose, and the designs get more complicated, and not to mention odder each year. It's nice to have something unique once in a while, but the recent exclusives have been looking a tad tooooo unique for my taste. The complicated designs also mean the ponies often come with lots of paint errors, and I don't want to pay high dollars for flawed ponies that will bug me.

I'd like to see a G4 this year. On the contrary to many, I don't really want a FS. I like the size they are in now, great for display and housekeeping. I think if it's a G4 exclusive and priced $12-15 each, no one will actually complain about owning one.

They look nothing like a G4 :(
On the bright side, they look like G1s!

Haha thanks for the heads up but those sets are actually not so new anymore. The newest ponies now are the single packs including new ponies cherry pie and a white pegasus, forgot the name. Lol

I'm worried we won't be getting the Prince outside of the playset. Hasbro might not be confident boy ponies will sell well on their own yet.
If they look like that, are you honestly SURPRISED?

LOL I wasn't going to say it, but you expressed it perfectly what I thought in my heart. And then Hasbro will run back to fans whinning that "we tried but it didn't work!". Like duh, if you try to sell what looks nothing like the prince on the box art. The princess is OK, although I was hoping Hasbro might make a new head for her like on her box art with a longer snout and slightly more mature look. Perfect for a custom Luna as well :D

Ponies are so rare 2nd hand these days. I rarely find anything, and even if I do, people want $10 for a grubby pony because it's "vintage"!

LOL @ Saply!

I´m in no way in possession of a collection that huge but what you may do is maybe trade off a few ponies for one more valuable/rare one? or something along those lines :) That way the value of your collection might stay the same with fewer physical ponies ^^

Haha I wouldn't have any problems if I owned a vault. Well, I more or less have most of the htf or so-called rares that I want in my collection, so there is nothing much to trade for. I did wonder about  a pony museum, most of those don't survive for long in my country. I don't really want to liquidate my ponies since I have no intention of getting out of collecting.  My friend and I did discuss once about a MLP Cafe and how feasible that might be, however, we just can't think out of the box for a way to host the ponies creatively while hungry people barge in and trample over your little shop. lol
