Curious for your thoughts as I have been in and out over the past few years.
Not so long ago, I was able to earn a little extra pony $ with a nice re-root and paintwork pony bringing in around $30-$40. I attended a local meet and watching ebay/Mercari.
Now, they sit. At $20, maybe, maybe a nice simple custom may sell. I love to make elaborate, sculpted, airbrushed over the top things, but I'm scared to invest the time and money in something that will be a loss. Even breaking even on supplies would be ok for the love of the craft but losing money on each piece isn't something I'm as interested in.
I realize those artists who have cultivated a reputation have no issues in this. But I'm astounded at the lack of customs and the few I see just sit.
Am I crazy or has something changed significantly?

For my daughter: visitors can't see pics , please register or login20210429_174829 by Kimberly Johns, on Flickr She loves it. She loves pink and kawaii so I tried to incorporate those things. Thank you to Heely for inspiration! Opinion Needed! I'm thinking of doing a rainbow set of this style (I'm in love with the soft fluffeh!) But I'm struggling with what to paint on them. Geometric shapes, mandalas, stars, fruits, something else? visitors can't see pics , please register or login20210429_174757 by Kimberly Johns, on Flickr And a bonus WIP. I thought about adding a chain from her nose to her ear, but that might be overkill. She is a painting exercise to try to get my skills back. visitors can't see pics , please register or login20210429_174918 by Kimberly Johns, on Flickr

The Arena is so inspiring! I started to work on a pony a while back and I noticed I was having vision issues with the detail work. I picked up a pair of reading glasses from Walmart and that seems to have made all the difference.
I'm excited to say I am finishing up a Strawberry Cow for my daughter after seeing Heely's Strawberry Cow. Just fun, no stress. I also picked up some very groovy rainbow yarn fiber and I want to make a few rainbow powder puff girls.

This is one of my all time favorite customs. If I ever see this one for resale, I'm on it! These are great!! Very inspiring. Trying to get back to customs is quite humbling after a four year break (my eye sight seems to have changed as I hit 40) and seeing this post is giving me courage. 2008 My first custom: Fleur visitors can't see pics , please register or loginfleur1 by Kimberly Johns, on Flickr Not too bad, it was a strong start with several less than ideal projects to follow. I pushed through this phase. My latest custom after hiatus (2020) visitors can't see pics , please register or loginHand dyed hair and a test for my rusty detail painting skills. My least favorite custom (2008) visitors can't see pics , please register or loginbaby melody1 by Kimberly Johns, on Flickr I really struggled on execution. My paints were also old and chunky. Every time I see this baby I shudder. visitors can't see pics , please register or loginIMG880_zps1e1cbaae by Kimberly Johns, on Flickr My most technically complex project was a working carousel with one reposed and sculpted pony from each generation. It was run off a fairly normal music box spring mechanism and that was my first mistake. I had to use grease and a ball bearing track to light the load weight. Getting that track balanced was very tricky. And we aren't even to the fun of sculpting and reposing!
