Pony Corral / Re: G1 ponies probably released in Australia?
« on: August 27, 2019, 01:23:09 PM »
I feel confident saying we got all Petite sets up till glowing - which isn’t to say we didn’t have those, I just didn’t have a set and I don’t strictly remember any of my friends having them. I had a Twinkle set and a Bright Sight set so I know we got pretty far. I also can’t say for sure we got the carousel or the castle, but we did get all the houses and the shops.

The other ponies I can with total certainty tell you were bought for me in Sydney were: birthday pony, pony bride, Chocolate Delight, Posey Rose, Diamond Dreams, Secret Beauty, the fancy mermaids, Happy Hugs, Sunsplasher, Gardenglow, Beautybloom, and Princess Royal Pink. The rest of my collection could possibly have come from South Africa / I inherited from my sister and don’t remember opening or remember having friends in Australia also owning/owning from the same set.

Hello! Chiming in quickly to answer an earlier question: Dream Beauties were 100% sold in Australia - I got Sheertrimmer for my fourth birthday :) obviously can’t tell you which ranges exactly, but they were definitely there.

The other thing I can tell you definitively - since as I have mentioned before many of my ponies were inherited from my older sister, and my South African grandmother in Johannesburg would often buy me ponies, so sometimes I am a little unsure about the EXACT provenance of everything in my childhood collection - is that I have a distinct memory of going to Toys r Us and buying Petite Ponies there. I had a set from almost every collection and many of my friends did too, as well as playsets. They were very popular.

Your insta is so soothing! I love the bold colour backgrounds - reminds me of catalogue shoots. And your collection is amazing.

Amazing! Funnily enough, I had a pony from each of those collections on that first page (aside from the rainbow curls). There's a photo of me unboxing Posey Rose on my third birthday (which was in 1991) soooo that tracks. Pony Bride was big in Oz - almost everyone I knew as a kid had one. Secret Surprises too - I can remember about two or three friends who had those ponies, plus Eyelash princesses.

I knew about a lot of the ponies in that 1988 catalogue (only had Seashore, who I inherited from my sister, who's 4 years older than me) from various bits of merch but I don't recall them being as widespread; of course, that's probably because I was a little younger, so the early 90s ponies loom larger in my mind.

Anyway obviously that's all anecdotal... some great finds!

I wonder if people who grew up playing with G3s feel differently? I imagine they probably do.

This is something I’m very curious about! I do think the omnipresence of the internet may make G3 feel different to kids who grew up with them vs how we felt with G1 ten years down the line, but it’s just plain wild to me that kids who grew up with G3 are like...... adults now.

This is obviously a too-hot-to-sleep late night thought, but indulge me haha...

Do you guys ever think about how strange it is that we’re now almost 15 years out from the debut of G3? When I got back into collecting properly in 2003/2004 it felt like the gulf between the end of G1 & the present was totally unbridgeable. 1993 to 2003 was such a leap, and all those ponies felt... gone. I can’t believe an even longer stretch has passed between G3 and today, but there are so many factors that make it feel less remote, I guess: as a kid you don’t have the agency to drive yourself to the store and buy ponies, so they’re already much more precious, and the internet/rise of eBay and collectors’ communities meant that so many more people were consciously buying G3 for the purpose of storing them or selling them on. I feel like we have much greater stock from that generation — a MIB g3 Dazzleglow isn’t the same find as a MOC g1 Dazzleglow. And yet it’s been so long. It’s crazy!

Anyway, just a little ramble. Feeling my age, clearly!

Pony Corral / Re: Is this g1 lot worth the price?

Well, you have 19 ponies there - and supposing they're all in good condition and worth about $8 on average, the combined value of the ponies alone is about $152 USD, or maybe around £113. Some of them are obviously worth a bit more than $8/pony but (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) none of them are SUPER rare. Then you have the playsets, which probably bumps you up another £75-£100 depending on their condition, maybe more, maybe less.

So to me it depends: do you want the majority of these ponies? Would you sell those that you didn't? It's not a small sum of money, you're right, but in terms of value for money it's a good deal. Really up to you.

Also - pony on top left end looks like Banana Surprise to me.

Thank you all for your kind words - my grandpa was 92, and I had a good 30 years with him, so I feel lucky in a way. It's nice to see these pictures after so long and be reminded of that.

... in 2018 eBay prices they're worth at least four in the bush! :P Wish I still had these two! Plus a sneaky Buzzer in the corner.

Just came across a few childhood pics I've never seen before and thought I'd share. I never get tired of these threads - please show me yours, too!

One more - my old Home Sweet Home I carted to my grandparents' place once a week - my grandfather recently passed and this photo really made me smile. He loved playing ponies with me.

The thing is there were pictures, and the seller seemed to know they had one or two good ponies in there (even mentioned Wooly by name) - not that it'd hard to do a quick ID. The whole blurb of "Bad memories for me, maybe good ones for you" makes me think there is definitely a story here but again I am not sure what the truth is.

Will see if they respond... the price and the actual ponies I spotted in there made it so tempting, so it frustrates me that this could just be a regular person without a story who is making a sale difficult. But these are good points that bronies aren't into G1. Something tells me this isn't actually a brony... you might be right that it's a spite sale.

I also have the kind of brain where if someone says "you can't have this" I suddenly want it a LOT more hahaha so now I am taking this as a challenge. I just want answers!
