Ah you can smooth magic with water, I used to use it that way before I found out how much better rubbing alcohol works.  It also for me thinned out better for feathering into the existing surface and most of the model horse customizers I know have gone over to it.  It is easier to sand then Aves too. 

I have found I can get more detail into it sooner and have it hold it shapes better then aves at the same point in the curing process.

The best thing to do is get a small sample of it and try it.
