Customs / Suggestions for Blindbag G4 Colt Conversions
« on: February 28, 2017, 09:34:09 AM »
Hello everyone!

First off, a big thank you to everyone who's helped me with your replies to my previous posts!!!

Here's my current question: I've recently started converting mlp g4 blindbag ponies for fun.
As I've mentioned before, I managed to scrounge up several of the Sweetie Babs/Babs Seed and Applebloom sets at local dollar stores.  So far that gives me:

Babs Seed
Applebloom - both of  these as-is from the sets

Scootaloo
Sweetie Belle - modded from set ponies

Button Mash - a mod in progress

I'm hoping to purchase a Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara in the future as there's no point in reinventing the wheel, and they're readily available on ebay.

This leaves me with three little foals to mod.  I want to mod them into school ponies from the show, but I've no idea who to pick.

Most of the school ponies are odd body shapes that I don't feel ready to tackle, like Snips and Snails, Featherweight or Pip.  This also leaves out Little Red types.

I'm hoping to do at least one or two more male ponies for this group too.  Gotta have a few foals in with all those fillies

So if you had three foals, which background school ponies would you choose to mod them into?  Any suggestions are welcome!

to lovesbabysquirmy: I've got some of those on order.  I figure I'm sort of saving those from the landfill anyway so I totally agree with you on that.

However I'm in Canada, those shipments take forever to arrive and I'm an impatient brat  :P  I've picked up the odd pony at dollar stores and a few blindbags and I was worried about ruining something someone else would want.  I'll take your suggesting into account though.  It IS the safest bet.

(I'm in the middle of modding a recently purchased Fluttershy - the one with the single stripe of constantly shedding pink glitter down the back of her head.  She'll be my :muffin: Pony when I'm done with her.  I'm pretty sure she's not rare, and she's slightly annoying as there's now pink glitter all over my desk.)

to Uninu: Thank you!  I'm also using some factory seconds like LovesBabySquirmy suggested, but any help with the new ponies would be greatly appreciated!

Customs / Re: Any tips for someone new to customizing?

I'm new to customs and learning the hard way as I go

If you do try painting the entire body, check to see if your fakie has any mold lines or seams.  If it sticks out now, it'll stick out much worse later on with a layer of paint on it.  Go to a hardware store, get a very fine grain sandpaper and lightly sand those seams before painting.

I'd also give the pony a bath with some non-oily soap, like dish soap, before painting.  Rinse it well, pat dry and then let air dry overnight.   The paint will stick better.

The hair is especially nice on this one.  She makes an adorable pony.

And I agree with you about the lipstick.  It'd be hard to twist up a tube anyway with hooves. :P

Customs / Applebloom to Sweetiebelle conversion
« on: February 24, 2017, 03:54:20 PM »
Thanks to all of you for your encouraging comments on my last post!

Here's the second attempt: an Applebloom to Sweetiebelle mod.  She may be imperfect but now I've got the three first crusaders all together.  The first two looked so lonely without her!

I forgot to take an intermediate shot.  I'll get one next time for sure.  He's already partly modded.

I think I like this new hobby.

Customs / Babs Seed/Sweetie Babs to Scootaloo mod
« on: February 22, 2017, 08:05:31 PM »
This is my first attempt at modifying a blindbag pony.

I learned about a billion things while making her.  For example, when the folks who do this say to lightly sand your pony first, they *mean* it.  Mold lines attract paint.  Must get finer grade sandpaper!  Also I think her wings ended up a little too far forward.  Obviously I need to brush up on my pegasus anatomy.

I picked up several of the Applebloom and Babs Seed/Sweetie Babs sets at a local dollar store for a song.  I kept one set as they were, but I couldn't find the other two Cutie Mark Crusaders anywhere (okay, I did find some Nightmare Night sets but they were out of my current price range for now and I didn't want spooky ponies, just regular ol' blank flanks).  So I decided to modify Babs the second into Scootaloo.

For a brief second there I was thinking it was a bad idea to stick actual candy to a pony... then I realized you'd MADE those candy bits.  Nicely done!  You sure fooled me, and she's adorable <3

Sorry if this is off-topic but I wasn't sure where to direct the question.

I've just started dabbling in modifying FiM blindbag ponies.  Of course this means I'm slowly amassing a herd of the wee things.  I'm not collecting them for profit or resale - just for the fun of it.  The modding is fun and I hope to eventually recreate some of the background ponies from the show.

What I don't want to do is accidentally mod one that another hard core collector would want, or make a fan have a heart attack because I cut the head off a hard-to-find model so I can add it to my Nerd Herd.

I don't have any plans on using any obvious character pony figures - like Cheese Sandwich, for example.  I've also noticed a few figures are expensive - such as the Zecora from 2013 - and I wouldn't take an exacto knife to anything that (relatively) pricey.  I've found lists of ponies available, but nothing to say if they're a dine a dozen or rarer than hen's teeth.

IS there such a thing as a "rare" or "bait quality/common" blindbag pony, or are they distributed evenly so every one is equally easy/hard to find?  The Main Six seem easy to get ahold of, but are there ones I shouldn't use if I get duplicates?  Is the going rate generally a good indicator of what not to hack into?

Any info you could give me would be welcomed.

Introductions / Hi there!
« on: February 22, 2017, 08:09:41 AM »
Hello there, I'm Xenotropos.  I'm old enough to remember when the first cartoons aired (yes, I'm THAT old), but didn't really get into the fandom end of things until I sort of fell head first into the fim show.  I dabble a bit in pony artwork, traditional media stuff mostly.  I've recently developed a sort of mania about customizing blindbag ponies - those little 2 inch high gen 4 ones.  I'll be seeking to trade info with others who share my new hobby, and maybe even post a few pics if they turn out any good.

Have a good day everyone!
