Pony Brag Arena / Re: Con + thrift finds! My FIRST g1s!

Lovely   I think if you want to use fabric softener, you just dunk the hair and let it sit for some time, then rinse.  I've had success taking super-frizzy hair and using a flat iron- you have to do it with the hair very wet and covered in conditioner but it makes a great difference.  Absolutely can't do it with tinsel, however, or other special hair types.

The Dollhouse / Twin Pines Products- worth it?
« on: July 14, 2014, 08:45:34 AM »
  Hi all,

I'm new to being interested in dolls and have picked up a few used American Girl dolls on the cheap (currently waiting patiently for them to arrive :P).  I was reading about restoring them and came across a blog where the restorer used only Twin Pines products.  She felt strongly about using them rather than Downy, etc, because the TP products are actually meant for dolls, vinyl and plastics.

My question is- do they work better that other things, like the 'Downy dunk'?  And, do you feel they are worth the money? I can kind of see her point...maybe things like Downy seem to work now, but 20 years form now the dolls' hair will be weird or sticky because of some reaction we don't know about currently?

Pony Corral / Re: Ponies on Just Between Friends website
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:01:57 AM »
Just Between Friends is a consignment sale...franchise?  As I understand it, someone locally pays a fee to host the sale. In my area (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) there are two a year (spring and fall).  Anyone can sign up and sell their used kid and maternity items- toys, clothes, room decor, basically anything kid and pregnancy related.  The seller gets most of the money but the host gets a percentage.  Not sure if this exists outside the U.S.

The website explains how the sales work, where they are, and are the way you sign up to sell things.  I've never heard of them selling anything online  but it would be cool if they started.

The sales can be a good place to look for ponies, but it's tough to get in early enough- if you volunteer to work the sale (as a cashier or stocker, etc) you get to shop early, and those people usually get a lot of the good stuff.  Consigners also get to shop early, but after the volunteers.  I've shopped and consigned and found G3s, but never G1s.

As far as I've ever known, JBF sales are local.  There's a website but it's to help advertise and explain the sales, and set up the labeling, etc.  I'd love it if they had an online store, though!  I'll camp this thread to see if anyone knows more.

There are a great thing to shop if you have kids, by the way! I get almost all of my daughters clothes there and have snagged some good toys, too. Never any G1 ponies, though.

Wanted! / Doll want: American Girl Bitty Twin Girl- Asian
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:56:51 AM »

    Hi all,

I have a trade list of wanted ponies and toys in my sales thread, but I want to put up a wanted ad for a somewhat unusual want  :P

I am looking for an American Girl Bitty Twin girl doll ( the toddler like dolls) with Asian features.  My daughter has a half sister that is half Korean and I would like for her to have a doll that looks like her little sister.

The doll doesn't need to be in perfect shape, since it's for a 6 year old, but it does need to be nice, since it's a gift.  I realize it's a bit of a long shot but I thought I would put up this ad just in case.  I'd be happy to pay cash (I get paid on the 18th), or some combo of cash and ponies if I had anything you were interested in

Pony Corral / Re: Bait advice
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:14:47 AM »
You might check out our sales forum and what's listed as bait there.  The bait vs. restore question is hot topic, especially for G1s. FarDreamer's sight is also really good for what can be fixed and how much work it will be: http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/fardreamer.html

I know people sometimes ID a pony and then ask here on the forum if it's rare, or describe the condition and see if it's worth saving.  It seems like the seller might be knowledgable so if they are listed as bait and cheap they probably are?   It also depends on what you want them for- are you looking to get in to customizing? If they are close by and cheap it saves you shipping costs.  Also if you are a new collector and there are some common but restorable ponies that could be a cheap way to aquire some G1s  :satisfied:

Hope that helps and good luck :)

I think it's hard to say what it might be worth without knowing how much they are asking?  I don't personally customize but I don't think you pay more than 1.00 or 2.00 per bait pony, and preferably much less (.50 for G1s?).  If they are listing it at 'bait' I wouldn't think it should be over 12 or 15 total?

But, it really depends on what ponies are in it, and how they are defining 'bait'.  Some people see inground dirt and pen marks as bait, but those can be restored with work.  On the other hand, cancer and regrind are forever  and bite marks and missing parts are also generally considered baity.

The Dollhouse / Re: American Girl- Discuss :)
« on: July 10, 2014, 09:19:01 AM »
I just won one in a lot- I'm so happy to find this thread

I never had one growing up, but my daughter is 6 and I'm hoping she likes her.   I think the one I won is older- she says 'Pleasant Doll Company' on the back of her head.   The retail prices are super-expensive, so I'm hoping to collect mostly used items.  I don't mind paying for quality, though, compared to so many throw-away toys nowadays.

I'll post some pics when she comes it, but it will probably be a while as I am hoping to combine lots and shipping with the seller on some things that aren't finished yet.

She looks awesome

Have you ever been thrifting, and bought something just because you felt bad for it?

I came across this sad little Cabbage Patch Pony....

I don't collect CPK, but she seemed to have the same problems we see in MLP- bent plastic, stains, surface dirt.  She was .79 and I just felt like she could pretty again :P  My daughter and I need to stay occupied this summer anyway, so...

Not sure what I'll do with her when she's done.  So far I've boiled her back into better shape and given her a good scrub.  She doesn't smell but I think she has some stains that will need sunfading.  Also, I looked her up and she's supposed to be a Crimp n' Curl Pony- I wonder if there is any way to add a clean wax back to hair and make it moldable?  Time for research!  I'll post some pics as she improves- just wanted to see if anyone else has done this   :silly:

Pony Corral / Re: Perfect hair - howto?
« on: May 24, 2014, 07:40:47 AM »
Do we know the actual chemical make-up of pony hair?  There are so many plastic conditioners out there!  Wouldn't it be weird if something like Armor-all was the perfect product for pony hair, and we've just never considered it?

If we knew the chemical formula, or at least the main type of plastic, we could experiment on some baits.

Thanks, Hathorcat!  I wanted to make sure I was being fair and it was hard to use the archives to judge condition vs. price.

Pony Corral / Help judging/valuing So-Softs condition?
« on: April 15, 2014, 05:57:17 PM »
  Hi all,

I don't have much experience with SS ponies, but have purchased a few recently in lots.  I find that I'm not sure how to judge their condition :what:    It seems like there is some acceptance of wear, but I don't know how much until it effects their value, if that makes sense.  I thought if I posted some pics maybe some of you could weigh in?

I have 3 Paradises, all with yellowing but different degrees of rubbing.  One has some light stains (or at least my gentle wash with Dawn didn't lift them), one has noticeable rubbing to the wings, and all have some slight ear/hoof rubbing.  I've read that its common for her to turn yellow, and that it can't be lightened?

Twist and Shady seems the worst to me- with her dark coloring Twist's rubs really show, and are on her horn, ears, and all the edges of her feet.   Shady's overall flocking seems...thin? and she has the rubs pictured.

The Truly's have some ear rubbing, but one is worse than the other and also has a mouth rub, and is noticeably dingy (again after a Dawn washing). The other has a rub to the back feet and a small bare spot on her back leg, but her overall flocking feels thicker and softer than most of the others.

Lickety Split has a few tip  rubs, and along her flank neck some rough spots with thicker glue that have yellowed a bit.  Still pinkish hair though! Hearthrob has noticeable yellowing of the glue, and a big rough gob of glue on her neck seam in the back (pic).

Can you tell me how you would rate them (like if you were listing them to sell) and how you would price them?  These are not ones I want to keep.   ^.^
