Pony Corral / Re: How many ponies were issued?

I knew it was a long shot! I suppose I was secretly hoping there was an all gens MLP collector who also happened to be a high-level ex-Hasbro employee with a penchant for numbers, spreadsheets and overseas production statistics

Hey, a girl can dream, right?

Pony Corral / How many ponies were issued?
« on: February 11, 2013, 06:47:03 PM »
Just a curiosity, but does anyone know how many ponies were issued from a specific generation or set in any given country? Like, say, how many G1 Cherries Jubilee were issued in the US? Or how many G3 Winter Snows were issued in the UK/Europe?

Of course we know certain sets had a more limited run... like the second sets of the G1 TAF's and twinkle eyes, or so many of the ponies that were issued during the final year/months of a specific generation - but do we have an idea of 'how' limited?

There is probably no way to truly know the stats, but I was just curious as to whether or not anyone had any concrete numbers. Thoughts?

That last one sounds like me Evelynea! Although I'm always picking up ponies I need, once a year in the spring I go on a pony buying spree (my friends have actually named it 'Pony Carnage'). I. Go. Crazy.

Hopefully I can hold out until July so that 'Pony Carnage' happens at the fair!!

One more... this one's not about ponies, but it is an 80's toy :)

When I was little, in addition to ponies, I collected Jem and the Holograms dolls. One day my mother was at the toy store and noticed all of the Jem merch marked down on clearance. It was 1988 and Hasbro had just canceled the show and the toy line.

She threw a number of dolls and *gulp, sigh, wipe away tears* SECOND YEAR FASHIONS (which, for those who aren't into Jem, are the most sought after, still going for $300-$400+ MOC). My lovely mother then decided that because I no longer played with my dolls on a regular basis, I had outgrown them... And promptly put it all back.

Funny thing is, I didn't hear about this until the late 90's, when she saw me trolling Ebay for Jem and ponies. She then explained what had gone down that fateful day in 1988 and I was :dropjaw:     and     :argh:     and     :enraged:  !!!!!!

Just imagine rows and rows of your most beloved G1's, MOC, being PUT BACK on the shelves!! Now, I love my mother dearly, but for about 10 minutes after she recounted the tale I was fit to be tied. We of course then made up and lived happily ever after

Anyone else?

Have you ever just *kicked* yourself for not making a pony purchase, realizing later on what a great deal you passed up?

Here's one of my oops moments:

Standing in the toy isle at TRU in 2006 with not one, not two, but ALL of the birth flower ponies in my cart *sighs* I was in grad school at the time, and my dollar was stretched pretty thin. Not to mention the fact that 2006 was a HUGE year for the ponies... I felt like I was in the store every week just playing catch-up with the new releases. So *gulp* I talked myself out of getting all but one, my birth month.

Here's one more, just for fun :)

Ebay auction for all 4 G3 MIB Disney princess ponies.
Starting bid: $20.00
Did I forget to bid? Yuppers.
Auction Ends: One bid. For $20.00. And I even think there was free shipping.

Anyone else? All gens welcome :)

Glad to know I'm not the only one! This site is such a great resource with so many fantastic collectors... when I think of how much time I spent looking for MLP info online (checking G1 accessories, the random playset spoon, mails orders) 8-10 years ago... oh boy ... just piecing things together. If i had a nickel for every time I visited Dream Valley in the late 90's/early 2000's I'd be a millionaire!!!

Just so happy I joined up here. Everyone is just brilliant and there are so many collectors that specialize in the MLP minutia, I'm a happy happy girl :)

Of course, my happiness is compounded by the fact that the countdown to the fair has begun and I'm just chomping at the bit to add more beauties to my herd :)

AH! I knew I read somewhere there were two waves... that makes perfect sense, one wave in two parts :) Thanks so much for the info hathorcat ... I only need one more to complete the set  More $$$ to spend at the fair on the holes in the rest of my collection!!

Pony Corral / Any other 'old but new' pony collectors?

Just curious... Are there any other collectors out there that have been collecting for 10-15 years+ that have recently decided to join the online pony community?

I only joined the Arena and TP in the summer of last year (the Drama Pony watch got me!!), but have been collecting since the late 80's (when I was a child and wanted to have EVERY mlp available :)

Just wondering if there are any folks like me that collected silently without an online presence. Am I the only one?

I agree with everything that has been said here. Although I collect G1-G3, when G4 came out I bought the molded hair set and a small handful of other ponies so I could have a little slice of the FIM merch.

Aside from the current lack of new characters, new poses and Hasbro constantly re-issuing the same core characters, I have to admit I didn't get into the G4 line for one reason ~ I felt like it was a rip off.

I don't mean to offend anyone who loves the G4 line, as I can absolutely see why it has been so popular... I just felt like I was paying the same amount (or more) for less 'pony' ... When G3's were in the stores, I could get a single for 4.99 or 5.99 depending on where I was shopping. Now the ponies are priced on the higher end of that scale and they're half the size!

I know the economy isn't great and companies need to do what they need to do to make their bottom line (same or higher price point, less pony plastic), I just prefer to spend my $$ on filling the holes in my current collection.

Has anyone else felt the sting of higher pony prices, with less pony to show for it?

Ha!! When I saw the subject header, I immediately thought it would be a post about how drinking while surfing ebay makes us bid insanely high on ponies :)
