Ok, tell me what you think!

I read through the tutorials and re-read my camera's manual.  Using the flash is still hit or miss.  On macro it works to hold the camera really close to the ponies but I still can't get the zoom right.  I played with the ISO and that was practically a disaster and I ended up changing it back to where I started.  I also can't get anything to focus in manual mode so auto it will probably be for me.

These are just me messing around with the settings.  No lightboxes or anything.  All with macro on.

Held close to the pony, no zoom, no flash:

I think the first 2 are a good start!  Those aren't the only ones that turned out decently either.

Thanks for all the tips!  I'll keep practicing!

maybe i can pray that she each turns an even shade of whatever their destined color is to be.

I've heard of that happening, specifically with CloudPuff!!!  :)

Haha, one of the first things I ever bought online was a pony on Yahoo! Auctions in 2001! Does anyone even remember that existing? You know, when eBay had competition? XD

Yes!  The online auctions drove me nuts.  I think it was mountain boys that would pop up in the yahoo auctions and sell really cheap.  It might have been the BB's, something male.  My mom wouldn't let me bid on auctions because she didn't think using credit cards online was safe.  I could only buy directly from other collectors who would accept cash or personal checks.  There was a time when it was common to mail cash or checks for ponies!!!  She put the fear of God into me.  It took me forever to try PayPal thanks to all the paranoia.

Darn it!  My husband is saying he doesn't think we'll be able to come home in June.  He's taking education classes and has to take days off sometimes to observe elementary school classes.  He doesn't think he'll have enough days off accrued by June to take a week off.  This totally sucks!  We didn't get to go home at Christmas this year either!

Leave me on the mailing list for the meet.  If anything changes I'll let you know!

I really like the bright curtain against the white walls in the first photo.  It works well with the colorful ponies and with how crisply the MIB items are arranged on the wall it makes for a very un-cluttered display.

Want any more snugglebums?  I have extras.  :)

Pony Corral / Good Lighting in Photos?
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:11:39 AM »
How are you all getting such good lighting in photos?  I got a digital camera for Christmas 2010 so I can FINALLY post photos of my collection but the lighting always sucks.  It's the best camera we could afford, but my pictures just don't turn out as nice as everyone else.  I can't zoom in so close and still get clear images.  I also can't use the flash or it totally washes everything out.  I've started using an extra aquarium light we had for some extra light and that helps, but it still doesn't look as good as all of yours.

Do you all just have really expensive cameras?  What's your trick?

Pony Corral / Who are the "Oldie Moldies"?
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:07:00 AM »
I'm just curious who's been collecting ponies a long time.  I have been since 1999 (I was 16).  You'd never know it by my post count but I've been aware of the trading post and the arena for as long as they've been around.

There's an awful lot of familiar names that I never see anymore.  The website where I bought my first pony online hasn't been up for years.  :(  Where did everyone go?

About a year or so ago I contacted someone selling a HUGE collection on Craigslist.  She turned out to be a collector that had been around for YEARS and I totally knew who she was when she told me her online name.

This is not an insult to new collectors, I'm just trying to track down all the old familiar "faces".  Where is everyone going?

Pony Corral / Re: Common Ponies becoming Harder To Find?
« on: February 05, 2012, 05:59:34 AM »
Umm, YES.  I've been saying this for years.  I started collecting around 1999.  At that time my sister and I could go to flea markets and come home with bags and bags of ponies.  Many of these are now considered very rare.  We found 2 mimics, tons of BB's, pearly babies, etc.  Much of the now HTF part of my collection was found this way and we weren't spending a lot on them.

On the bright side, I figure if I outlive all the other collectors I'll get ALL the ponies eventually.  I am a VERY patient person . . .

Ok, consider this an uninformed opinion and please don't get angry if I've missed something important.  I only got into FiM recently as we don't get that station.  I am posting this because I LOVE :muffin: Pony, not because I want to start a fight.

I like the name :muffin: Pony Hooves and I like having someone a little different on the cartoon.  No that she's had a huge part but as best I can tell the ponies love her just as much as any other pony in ponyland.  I think people read too much into cartoons, but showing her as someone who is lovable and fun might make kids more open to people who are a bit different.

I've heard a lot of complaining over the years about toys being too perfect and cookie cutter.  It's not like they're making barbie's in wheelchairs and bratz dolls with scoliosis.  I'm not in the camp that barbies are going to make kids anorexic (remember the G2 haters who thought they were too thin?).  However, what's wrong with a toy that's not cookie cutter perfect?

That said, I would personally be hesitant to wear a T-shirt with her name on it because people who haven't seen the show and don't know what she is would be seeing it.  Without knowing that she's a funny, cute, lovable character you could take it the wrong way.  I suppose the same could be said for her name on toy packaging so with all my own opinions I do see the other side of the argument.

I like :muffin: Pony, I hope she's made into a toy.  If they don't make her into a toy maybe I'll break my no customs rule.

Sorry if this argument doesn't fit in with what's really going on, I've only read what I've run into and it sounds like there's a lot more going on.

All that said, they need to have someone put the smack down on those two brats that always make fun of AppleBloom.  Why are we picking on :muffin: Pony who's lovable?  Let's have an adult pony step in and stop the bullying.  That would make a good letter to Princess Celestia!

Far Dreamer, what an amzing childhood herd! :D

Did you have the Baby Nursery as a kid too? That must have been so much fun!

Yeah, the nursery and the Paradise Estate.  I wanted the PE sooo bad but my mom couldn't afford it so she got me the nursery instead.  A few years later the PE went on clearance and my sister and I both got one for Christmas!  It's all really good memories.
