Pony Corral / Re: G3 Accessory Values in the future
« on: April 18, 2015, 11:42:11 PM »
G1 accessories are more varied and generally better designed than G3 stuff, plus they have a couple decades' head start in the vintage collectable department. I can't see G3 ever really catching up status-wise or price-wise, and I say that with love as a G3 accessory collector. ;)

I think the pieces that will see the most increased value down the line are the more unique clothing items like Snowflake's hood or Pumpkin Tart's ears... And later on and to a lesser extent, for the crazy completionists, the tiny little incidentals. I've already lost and replaced a Seaside Wysteria starfish, so you're dead on with that one IMO!

It's kind of funny... There are already a few G3 accessories that are crazy hard to find, but demand is so low for most G3 pieces that a lot of people may think they're not worth selling at all, which makes them even harder to find! The ones who have the accessories think "there must be a million of these, so who would even want them anyway" and the ones who do want the accessories think "there must be a million of these, so why can't I find any?" :P (On that note, if anyone's just sitting on Royalette's ring, hit me up!)

Ironically, I think the biggest pain from a buyer's standpoint is the fact that such a large quantity of the G3s that are in collector circulation are still MIB. It's fantastic if you need the pony too, and it's great for referencing, but it's so frustrating when your collection is just missing a few bits and bobs. You might be able to only find that one little accessory for sale MIB with whatever pony/playset they came with, and who wants to buy an entire Singing Dancing Pinkie Pie Bonus Set just to get a single tiara, you know?

I have a pack of cheap white cotton gloves that I use to dust my knick-knacks, including ponies. They are a lot like these http://www.amazon.com/Size-Medium-Jewelry-Inspection-Premium/dp/B00CUN4SQC/ and I just sort of... pet the dust off the ponies while wearing them? ^^; For ponies with curly hair that I don't want to smoosh, I do an upside down gentle shake and blow maneuver. When one set of gloves gets too grubby, I just throw them in the wash.

The fluffy Swiffer dusters work just as well, but they're a lot more expensive, and once they're dirty they're done for. I usually save them for hard to reach surfaces like the tops of cabinets and ceiling fans.

Gas dusters would probably work a treat too, but please be careful with them. It's not just "air" in there, it's usually something like tetrafluoroethane. If you do all 600 at once while in an enclosed space, you could get very woozy. :dizzy: Also, since the chemical propellants are also powerful refrigerants, you can get frostbite if they come in contact with your skin. The stories I could tell you about my naughty little brother's friends stealing my gas dusters to waste them on getting high and burning each other...

There are "organic" air dusters too, which are truly only compressed air, but they're bulkier, noisier, and much more expensive, although they are rechargeable so you can use them over and over.

I feel like this post makes me sound like some sort of dusting fiend. Dusting was always my chore as a little girl, so I guess I formed Opinions!

I'm thinking of just hanging a sheet over the bookcases held on with velcro patches.  Not the most attractive, but at least will give decent protection against dust and sunlight.

I bought some small tension rods and hemmed curtains out of pony fabric to protect my ponies from the sun. I won't pretend that a $20 bookcase and a $5 curtain rod looks as nice as a proper cabinet, but it was simple and got the job done. Plus it was easy to pull the curtain aside if I wanted to mess with them or just have them on display. :)

Pony Corral / Re: Would you debox a G1/G2/G3 pony?
« on: April 16, 2015, 11:07:43 AM »
I would never open a G1 or G2 unless the pony was being actively harmed by the packaging (mildew, etc). I would be terribly tempted though! I have a MOC G1 that I've been eyeing for years. She's a common pony, and the card is in pretty rough shape. Plus I found her at a thrift store, so it's not like I would've wasted a ton of money if I opened her. But in the end I always get a hold of myself. :P I'd like to claim it's out of MLP solidarity, but don't think it's my community conscience at work. She's not rare enough to be saved for posterity, and I can't imagine a MOC collector wanting to buy her. It's more like an anthropomorphized respect that she clung to her card all through the years, even though she must have gone through heck, so who am I to part her from it? But if it was a replacement for a favorite childhood pony, like Glory, I don't know that I would be able to resist the temptation to open her, so I resist the temptation to even buy her MOC in the first place! Someday I'll find a lovely minty loose Glory, and I'll be glad I didn't ruin a MOC to get her. :)

G3s are totally fair game though! I think the only G3s that have been spared in my deboxing frenzy are the art ponies, since they display so nicely in their boxes anyway. Oh, and the birthstone ponies because I didn't want to deal with their tinsel. The G3 release had both the benefit of a mature collecting community and the ubiquity of the internet to ensure plenty of MIB survivors even 10+ years later. Of course, if everyone thinks the same way, then maybe they'll be scarce in another 10 years. ;) Even then, I still won't regret having opened most of my G3 collection because all those awkward boxes were a nightmare! I don't know how MIB collectors do it!

Pony Corral / Re: 10th Anniversary Star Swirl color Swirl Pony
« on: April 15, 2015, 02:11:13 PM »
I think I paid around $20 for my Starswirl, but she has a slight mane trim and about 50% pink left in her hair. So, I'd guess closer to $40 for a really nice one.

My Kroger still has her in stock, or at least they did yesterday. If you like, I'd be happy to pick one up for you.  :)

Wiggles: "WWWAAAAAHHH"
Posey: "Bwahaha! Like taking a tiara from a baby... Now for that barrette!"
Romper: "You're getting this, right? ...Dude, seriously? You gotta record in landscape."
____

Romper. We need to talk. Do you know what this is about?

*sigh* My "flair"?
____

Quackers: Posey, I need to have a word with you about conforming to the dress code for working at SmallMart. Chapter 6 of the employee handbook clearly states that no hats are to be worn while in uniform.
Posey: It's a tiara. And it's fabulous.
Quackers: Also, Bring Your Daughter to Work Day was yesterday.
Posey: Huh? Oh, yeah no, don't worry about that, she's not my daughter! I mean, could you imagine?! *laughs*
Romper: She's so fired.

Pony Corral / Re: Do magic erasers 'open pores' on ponies?
« on: April 13, 2015, 03:48:58 PM »
Yes, melamine foam (aka magic erasers) removes marks via micro-abrasion, so you are basically just sanding them.

If you live in a mold-prone environment and wish to seal your ponies, I'm afraid you'd have to do more than just wiping them with almond oil. (Your ponies' pores would be impregnated with rancid oil a year down the line. I wouldn't recommend it.) Using a dimethicone-based product, like some hair conditioners, would be a better bet, but would leave your ponies fairly glossy and the other substances in hair conditioner might react badly with the vinyl over time.

If you want to get serious about it, first you'd have to sterilize the ponies, otherwise you're just sealing existing spores into the plastic, then you'd have to apply a product that's made to protect vinyl. You can often find these for use on cars/boats. I don't know what's available in where you are, but the brands I'm familiar with are 303 and Poorboy's World. (My uncle restores vintage cars which is how I know about them at all. I do not use these products on my own ponies.) Keep in mind, you might have to repeat the application process every so often, which may eventually cause damage to your ponies in itself, although not of the mold variety. I don't know what the long term effects on ponies' paint would be, for instance. It's up to you whether it would be worth it or not.

Sorry for the essay, but I hope that helps you a little.

Pony Corral / Re: Pony poses? Best, worst?
« on: April 02, 2015, 05:01:06 PM »
My favorites are the Posey, Skyflier, and Dancing Butterflies poses.

I used to dislike Sweet Tooth's pacing pose, but it has grown on me over the years. I'm still waiting for the Tootsie pose to grow on me. :P

Pony Corral / Re: Help?
« on: April 02, 2015, 02:00:39 PM »
Sorry, the yellow pony isn't Anchors Away. The colors are similar, but the pose is wrong. I'm pretty sure it's a fakie.

I don't know much about G2s, but I can tell you that this version of Light Heart came with the canopy bed, which is why she can lay down like that. She's probably not particularly rare, since she was one of the G2s to be released in the US, but I can't say what a good price would be for her. I had one once upon a time, but she was in such rough shape, I gave her away for free, poor thing.

Although there wasn't a lot of actual data in the article, after reading the pdf, I don't think you have much to worry about with ponies in particular. For example, out of the 26 vintage vinyl toys they tested, only 8 had levels of lead that were near or exceeding modern safety standards. They don't specify if any of these are MLP or not, but of those eight, only three had highly elevated lead levels, none were ponies, and the researchers hypothesized that those were due to lead chromate being used as a brown pigment which isn't very common in MLP anyway.

All things considered, this study doesn't give me the impression that ponies are hazardous to anyone's health. Malibu Barbie on the other hand...

Pony Corral / Re: Gen 3 books or episodes/movies. Which was 'canon'?
« on: March 28, 2015, 09:12:30 AM »
To answer your second question first: yes, the early G3 characterizations were sometimes used in the books, although more often in the board books and not necessarily the softcover ones for older readers. Rainbow Dash was adventurous, Sunny Daze invented new games, Kimono was the wise historian, Pinkie Pie was a bit shy and naive, Sweetberry liked to create desserts, etc.

In my own opinion, it's all "canon". Other entertainment franchises, comic books especially, have had numerous changes to characterization and alternate universes that can all exist simultaneously, so I don't see why MLP can't be the same. G3 Rainbow Dash can be a dare-devil and C7 Rainbow Dash can be a fashionista and G4 Rainbow Dash can be a dare-devil again and it's all good.

Or on the other hand, maybe none of the G3 stuff can really be considered a "canon". You have to keep in mind that people who are/were "G3 fans" are toy collectors with perhaps a passing interest in the cartoons/books, so the concept of even having a canon for G3 is kind of a non-starter. Would being a Lego collector mean that The Lego Movie was your Lego Canon? I think the response of most G3 collectors to the idea of nailing down a G3 canon would mostly be a noncommittal shrug.

She looks like she has the same hearts, they're just a bit hard to see from that angle.
They are more visible in the "rear view" comparison shot:

She's definitely greener than normal, like the one in the MOC picture, so I think it's safe to say they came from the same batch, but the batch size must've been tiny to have so few pop up over the years... If there are only a few left in existence, that's like Reverse Gusty territory, isn't it? Songtoisis is a lucky lady!

I dont know if the couple of people who had them loose still have them but there was certainly a current member who posted about having another one recently...I think it was in one of those other recent threads about the G&S girls.

Ah, you're right! Songtoisis posted about her white-haired Starglow back in 2012: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,311615.0.html
Here's one of the comparison pictures from that thread:

Gorgeous!

And Clipper won a MOC one from the Delaneys back in 2013, but no pics in that thread.  :P

You have a great memory, hathorcat!

BlushingBlue, it seems there are at least 3 of them in the collector community, since Eurocoin also seems to have one,  but I am sure there are more! Can I ask where you would have bought yours?

I can't say for 100% certain, but she was very very likely just an ordinary US release. We occasionally saw ponies on Canadian cards in the toy stores around where I lived, but I don't think my Brightglow was even that special.  :P

That white-and-yellow haired Starglow is really intriguing! I didn't think it sounded very pretty compared to the pink, but she's quite lovely in that picture. Her body color looks paler too, more of a mint green than the teal-ish color I'm used to seeing. Unless that's just an optical illusion a la The Dress. It would be neat if her white hair glowed in the dark along with her stars!

Pony Corral / Re: The battle of the rainbows!
« on: March 23, 2015, 08:22:27 AM »
I voted for Year 2 because I like the classic pastels a little bit more than their vibrant cousins.

Plus, I was pretty obsessive-compulsive as a kid, and it always irked me that the Year 3 "rainbow" ponies' manes weren't at least rooted in rainbow order. >_< Would pink-coral-chartreuse-aqua have been so hard, Hasbro?! lol
