I have 2! One is nice and one needed a new horn and some other work: visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I'm trying to decide if I should sell her as-is, or change her hair.

Everything! XD My collection is almost entirely ponies I either found in thrifts stores or received as gifts.

But more to the point, yes, I have a few duplicates that were gifts, and I just sort of keep them around. Also, I've had a Remco fakie baby since I was little, no clue where she came from, and then later on, somehow got a matching adult fakie that became it's "mom" and now they're both just sort of there even though I don't really want them because I can't bring myself to get rid of them.

Yes and no? Within G1, since I still almost entirely rely on second-hand stores for ponies, no, I'll take whatever I can get, even if it's a pony or a set I wouldn't specifically look for otherwise. But I'm more selective about other Generations, only have a few from each, and prefer less "gimmicky" ponies (so, no Rainbow Power, no whatever those G4 are called with the giant wings, no super-long hair G3s, etc.)

I agree, first step is to get them out of the bags and let them dry out, unless they are already dried out and were put in the bags later. You'll probably have to clean them in batches because you have so many, and I agree, if you're near other pony people, you may be able to get help. I find cleaning ponies to be fun XD

I was going to say I'd worry about the smell last; cleaning and sunfading may take care of that, BUT, if you're cleaning them in batches, maybe you don't want them sitting around smelling for who knows how long. Maybe you can rinse them all in a bathtub to get off the superficial dirt and mold, then let them dry out and store with something like baking soda until you can get to all of them?

I'm also not sure that soaking for hours is really necessary or even a good idea if you have colors that bleed (like Surprise and Shady's hair). I've cleaned a small batch of mildew-covered ponies and they did come out great after some scrubbing inside and out, but it's a lot of work. After scrubbing, I also had to sunfade out the mildew stains and pigment from the colors that bled from the moisture in storage. That didn't take too long, but still, for a lot of ponies, that's a lot of space and time.

Do you have to soak her to use the oxyclean? If so, I'd skip it because with her tail mechanism, you can't really get the water out. Definitely don't take the head off unless you absolutely have to because it will break the mechanism.

I would do what Amy-Q suggested, except before acetone, try rubbing alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl seem to work about the same). It sometimes works on ink and doesn't usually hurt the paint.

Top row:
White Tootsie with Sundance her head and tail, rehaired Tootsie, Tootsie money bank and Tootsie porcelain

Middle row:
Yellow Peru Tootsie, green Peru Tootsie, regular green Tootsie and Spanish Tootsie (marked Spain)

Bottom row:
Yellow Venezuelan Tootsie, SB yellow Tootsie, SB green Tootsie, regular white Tootsie and Italian white Tootsie
Oh, see, I really like the...bank? I guess that's which one I'm looking at? The big one on the top right? I'm really thinking it's just the pose of the toy that makes me not like her.

I have her, but I don't especially like her, which is weird because I like TAF Buttons, and they have the same color scheme. Maybe it's the combination of the those colors with this pose? I don't know. I want to like her, but I don't, and I don't know why :(

Her symbols are ridiculous and bizarre.

I love it XD

Can't afford her, but I love her and want her anyway. Maybe one day.

Why then do these spots show up chronically in certain colors only?  If it was purely based on environmental factors, the distribution should be ubiquitous.  The evidence doesn't fit the facts.  There's some old posts about bacteria eating plasticizers, yes, but in the same breath they recommend an acne cream (Remove-Zit) as the perfect treatment, something we know is a terrible idea now.
I'm not sure what you're saying.

Quote
Ponies have developed age spots in conditions that preclude bacterial growth - under 50% humidity.  For all we know its a commonality rather than causation. For that matter there's likely more than one agent causing discolourations, which we tend to lump together under one umbrella term.
Multiple causes is exactly what I suspect too. Age, environmental conditions, the exact make-up of the different colors and dyes probably all contribute. I'm not sure why this would necessarily rule out bacteria as one of the potential causes. We don't know the exact conditions these toys may have experienced, and if there is any bacteria in there, it would obviously be something a bit unusual since plastic isn't typically a good medium for living things. But we have found specialized bacteria that can live in other strange, supposedly inhospitable environments, so I wouldn't want to rule out the possibility entirely until someone more knowledgeable can identify just what that was that Black Curtains and presumably others have found.

Price Check Archives / Re: Starlight and Melody...Rehair or Not? PC?
« on: November 08, 2015, 12:23:34 PM »
That's what I would do if I were going to sell. I admit, I don't know what the value would be either way, but even if you did a really fantastic alternate-color-rehair, which seems to often add value, to me the increase in price is rarely worth the time and effort needed to actually do the work of rehairing. But maybe that's just me.

If you're planning on selling them, it seems that it's usually better to sell without rehairing if it's just a trim. For more serious cuts, like your Starlight, I don't know...it probably depends on how sough-after or rare the pony is and just what the haircut looks like and if you can find a buyer (I've seen some cuts that actually looked kind of cute, but not everyone would agree).

If you're planning on keeping them, then yeah, whatever you like.

Yeah, Black Curtains had found what looked to be bacteria, although unfortunately it looks like they either deleted the video of the microscope image or made it private. I wouldn't call it "severe bacteria activity," but there was definitely something in there.

Also, old and maybe not the most helpful, but I have a link in my signature to a list of cleaning supplies and methods people have tried, with the results.

Pony Corral / Re: Crimped hair...
« on: November 08, 2015, 06:41:41 AM »
I've had some success in the past with fizzy hair by wetting or down with hot or warm water . Combing it  out and the putting the still wet hair  between a folded over towel /tea towel and carefully   ironing it  on a med to low setting.
Yeah, but you don't want to iron crimped hair if you're trying to save the crimping.

Pony Corral / Re: Tips for Shipping Packaging?

I don't use packing peanuts because they get everywhere and are often made of styrofoam, which doesn't biodegrade.
I use recycled packing peanuts from things people sent me.

My general rule for myself is bubble mailers for most standard ponies, boxes with packing materials (foam, packing peanuts) for things that seem more fragile (Dream Beauties, wingers, etc). A lot I also put in clear plastic baggies or wrap in thin foam sheets too, which I figure would also protect flocking from getting rubbed off. But a lot of regular nothing-special ponies just go in a bubble envelope.
