Pony Corral / Re: No wonder these sets didn't make it to the States!
« on: July 26, 2012, 12:05:39 PM »
And yes, Canada can get both Int'l AND USA sets! It's pretty much THE best place to get ponies. There's a distributor in Quebec. I found out they even have Rarity's Carousel Boutique with the bonus orange carriage, even though it's pretty much a France exclusive. But Quebec has ties with France, so I guess that makes sense! Only thing that hasn't been spotted in Canada is the blind bag boxes, I think.

I hate to argue, but it's not like this at all in Canada. We get no exclusives. No international ponies like Starswirl, no Target exclusives, and precious little merchandise. We don't even get all the store exclusives for chains we DO have, like the G3 TRU birthflowers, G4 TRU plushies, or the upcoming TRU Fan Favourites set. And yes, no blind bags of any sort. While it is true that a couple of the Target exclusive items have mysteriously shown up from time to time in other stores, they have been in smaller chains that don't have a wide distribution. The distributor in Quebec is actually Hasbro Canada's headquarters. Quebec doesn't have any ties to France by the way, that's like saying America has ties to Spain because some of the original colonists were from there. It is true that Quebec is largely a french speaking province (their french is close but not the same as France's french), and because of this I can easily imagine Hasbro Canada importing some products from Hasbro France because of the french on the packaging. But this is actually the first I'm hearing of it and now I'm jealous because those things certainly don't make it to the rest of Canada as they lack english.

The reason we can get releases from both Europe and the States is that the law requires all packaging in Canada must include everything written in french as well as whatever else happens to be there. This doesn't mean that we get Euro exclusives, they are still products that Hasbro Canada must buy the distribution rights for. What it means is that the packaging for the regular release ponies could come from either source. I suspect that this same law may be the reason we miss out on some store exclusives. The company would have to repackage for Canada to include french and we're considered too small a market for it to be worth that extra expense.

On the plus side, we did receive a couple of the waves early and we do have more of some products that the States seems to be short on for whatever reason like the Sweet Slumbers set (only in one chain here). Which should mean we have a couple of things to trade with people in other countries. Unfortunately, our high shipping rates tend to prohibit that.

Pony Corral / Re: Question about Rainbow Curl ponies
« on: July 23, 2012, 07:25:46 PM »
The MOC pictures of Rainbow Curl ponies that are on My Little Wiki show them with separated colours.

However, depending on how obsessive you are, this might drive you mad trying to separate them. I've done it a few times and it's quite time consuming and sometimes hard to tell the colour apart on individual strands.

I just want to second this so it has more chance of being spotted, Gingerbread has been known to actually get worst when sunfading! There are members who have sunfaded her successfully, but do be very careful and look up the stories before you try her.

Pony Corral / Re: Show me your.... Regrinded ponies!! :D
« on: July 02, 2012, 08:35:06 PM »
Oh good, I was wondering if I was just adding to the confusion by not being clear enough!

In the original spirit of the thread, here's Sky Dancer with regrind so bad her body looks almost entirely hot pink! You can see she's still a bit more normal pink on her back leg and if you look at her shoulder in front of her wing you can see a pattern. What's funny about her is that her head appears to have been made with a batch containing no regrind at all so the contrast is quite noticeable.

And for good measure, a Party Time and a Pinwheel.

Pony Corral / Re: Show me your.... Regrinded ponies!! :D
« on: July 02, 2012, 04:55:22 PM »
Yes, regrind is when old is mixed with new. Plastic is made as a liquid which is poured into a mould. As it cools it hardens and there's a chemical change that happens. Regrind is when old (therefore already hardened) plastic is ground up (thus the word re-grind) and added to the batch of brand new plastic when it is still liquid. The idea is that it melts in and adds to the volume so there's less waste and more cost saving. When this is new you can't tell the difference. The problem is that chemically the old and new are different and can never truly merge with each other. The result of this is that the old and new plastics age differently. The dyes pool and break down and react strangely over time and you get those blotchy patches developing all over as this happens. (Think about what happens if you melt a chocolate and then put it in the fridge to reharden. Once it's melted the second time it changes and will never taste the way it had originally.)

Hasbro did this with certain batches of ponies during a certain time period. That's why certain ponies are prone to it and others will never get it. Examples are Party Time and a lot of the flutters. I think there's a lot of misunderstanding of what regrind is in the community. There's a tendency to believe it's pink patches that appear on ponies. That's not strictly true. You have to remember that the old plastic used for regrinding already had dye in it and therefore they could only be used in new batches of plastic with a similar colour. Hasbro wouldn't have thrown blue old plastic in a batch of new yellow, it would change the colour. That's why you see it as splotching on ponies like Party Time. The old pink was close enough to the orange that it wouldn't have changed the overall colour too much. It's also a small part of why some ponies get so much variance in colouration (think Galaxy).

Unfortunately as the dyes leech and the plastic breaks down differently certain moulds and bacteria are attracted and you can easily get brown splotches developing where they break it down further (cancer) on top of the regrind discolouration. Lady Lovely Locks dolls are great examples of this.

That's why that Starry Wings and Majesty aren't really regrind spots. Pink wouldn't have been added to those batches of plastic. I would guess that the Starry Wings really is an old lipstick stain. The lipstick would have been washed away long ago but the dye from it stayed. Might also have been pink marker used as pretend lipstick.  Majesty may have been stored up against something that leeched its dye onto her, like another toy or accessories in Goodwill for example. When my ponies were first in storage for a few years they had no protection and Sunbeam leeched pink dye onto Scoops, Parasol, and Crunch Berry. I suspect both Starry Wings and Majesty would be fixed by sunfading, where true regrind can't be.

Pony Corral / Re: G4 Sweet Slumbers Set ever actually released?
« on: June 30, 2012, 04:02:51 PM »
As far as I know Real Canadian Superstore is the only chain carrying them in Canada, but they have droves of them still. At least every one I've been in in southern Ontario and a recent trip through the BC interior has had a couple of shelves overflowing with them. In two stores they weren't with the pony singles because of their bigger packaging so look around.

aerieberry, are you sure you're thinking of Cheerilee's picnic set? Because a bunch of Zellers stores in Canada are still stocking Cheerilee's schoolhouse and it's easy to get them confused.

68
Thanks for everyone's interest! I've had plenty of PMs and put everything on hold (I hope) I'm trying to respond to everyone's PMs as soon as I can.

SkyCakes, if you see this, I've received your PM and put the pony you were interested on hold, but you seem to have PMs blocked so I can't respond!

69
Confirmed, the headband with star (which glows in the dark, btw) is for Bitsy of Hasbro's Moondreamers line.

That tiny pink comb reminds me a lot of the She-Ra combs, but I'm pretty sure that's not it.... I might be thinking of something similar?

The shoes also remind me of Strawberry Shortcake, but they are much too small and long to be vintage ones. The line has been through a few generations though, have you checked out all of them?

The silver triangular belt with the danglies that's right by Bitsy's headband looks quite a lot like something Jem wears in promotional art. Perhaps something from that line or possibly from it's competitor, Barbie and the Rockers?

This is a "for the record" want list! I only trade please. I live in Canada, and I am allergic to cigarette smoke! Bold names mean a pony I especially want and smaller names mean I'm not all that interested in them.

Trade list is here!

G1
I'm a "Gotta Catch 'em All" type G1 collector, I'll even grudgingly collect sets I'm not too keen on. If it's not on this list then I already have it! I only collect loose ponies, and I'm not picky about flaws, as long as they are nice to display and photograph. I'm not against doing my own restoration work either.

Littlest Pet Shop
I just collect ones that catch my eye because they make nice companions for ponies in photography. I'll only go for the bobble-headed ones, and only if they don't have fantasy style "tattoo" decorations or fairy wings or whatever. (Though I WOULD like the three Dragons!) Essentially, if their colouration is not far off from what natural colouration would be, then I'm probably interested.

Send me a picture so I can decide if I like it.

I live in Canada and I own a cat. (Allergy alert!)
Please press the "toggle gallery" button on the Ponydex page for more pictures. I like to get many pictures of ponies I'm trading or selling, just ask if you want more! The conditions listed are very general. A lot of stuff on this list is waiting to be cleaned up and sorted so just PM about whatever you are interested in and I'll get that done so you can have exact conditions and pictures. The values on their pages may have fluctuated since I last price checked. Once you PM me each value will be re-checked prior to sale/trade, so if you think something is too high you're probebly right and it shall be corrected!
Cross posting in For Trade and For Sale.

Rather than go mad trying to keep two lists updated with holds, new items, and completed trades, I've decided to simply leave a link here to my Sales thread. Please do go have a peek there, everything on that list is also open for trading. To be honest I prefer trades, they're more fun!

Available for trade: G1, G2, G3, G3.5, G4, Ponyville, McPonies, G3 accessories, fakies, Magic Meadow, Fashion Star Filly, Smurfs, Snugglebumms, She-Ra, Muppet Babies.

Pony Corral / Re: What is wrong with my Twinkler?
« on: June 16, 2012, 10:09:39 PM »
I had a pony like that once. It did turn out to be mold on the inside. The reason it showed up as spots was because her plastic was thinner in those places then the rest of her body, just a side effect of how she was made. Once she was cleaned out the spots vanished.

What a gorgeous custom!

Here's one of my own. I know his colour isn't right but I made him before I got his daddy. I've been thinking of redoing him with a full body paint for a couple of years but I've been chastised enough for making him that I feel too guilty now. What is the prevailing attitude on the subject nowadays?

The trick to so-softs is that they look so tatty if their flocking is wearing but so fantastic with lush fur! The fuzz photographs well, makes me want to pet them through the screen.

You can coax their shape back the way it was meant to be and unless their hair is very bad, frizzyness can be tamed as well. Smooze will take some love but can be cured. Just think of what you get to give back to your old friends now! What kissthethunder said is absolutely true, there are many very skilled restoration experts here who can help you treat your ponies. Just post pictures.

What probably happened is that you are now looking at them with adult eyes. Children don't tend to notice or care as much about dirtiness or the collectible condition of their plastic friends. They see past that to the important parts... the love and friendship in them. I got Applejack when I was 5 or 6 and he and I had the same sort of relationship you clearly had with yours. He is coated in smooze, lost his tail decades ago, had his apples faded to orange, dry ends on his mane and rubs on his eye paint. But I consider these to be like badges of honour. He got that way because he was with me throughout everything life threw at me. All that "playwear" is proof of what a good friend he always was, and still is now. It sounds like your friends have similar badges!

I'd love to see pictures of your little heroes. Here's mine if it helps...

One of the first things I did when I connected with the online pony community back in the 90's was trade for a replacement tail for him. It felt wonderful! So trust me when I tell you that cleaning your friends will feel fantastic.
