Off Topic / Re: How many Disney animated films have you seen?
« on: November 25, 2021, 11:51:20 PM »
My husband and I have watched a LOT of Disney films over the course of our lives so far (we are in our early 40's), and we own quite a lot of this list on VHS (yes we still have boxes of those hanging out in the house) and on DVD/Blu-ray.

I noticed the following were missing from the list (unless I missed seeing them as I scrolled through): So Dear to My Heart (1949) (live action/ animation hybrid) and Buzz Light Year of Star Command (2000) (sequel).

The direct to VHS/DVD Home Media release film category starts to get a little messy if you compile the complete list of "film/animation" releases since some were just animation episodes that at the time were not released yet (Tarzan & Jane (2002)for example) or compilations of other episodes from the animation series (Gargoyles the Movie: The Heroes Awaken (1995) - 5 part pilot edited together). Then there is the whole bunch of them that were just collections of animated original content "shorts" loosely tossed together to make a sequel for release verses an actual complete story.

Apparently the online store The Toy Shoppe Northport has two of them in stock (Sweet Stuff & Skyrocket). I've never ordered from them, but the prices + shipping are probably going to be better options than Ebay for anyone who does not live near any Cracker Barrels or Meijers.

Off Topic / Re: How does your SO react to your collections?
« on: October 27, 2021, 08:23:05 PM »
1) My collections are no secret. If you know me, you know of at least one of them.
2) My husband started dating me after knowing about the collections and seeing them in person. He knew what he was getting in to.
3) Both of us have massive collections of various things. This does become a slight dynamic in the house/houses we have lived in over the years but just have to figure out where all the stuff goes.

Now, from a work point of view, it is not a secret that I collect things but I do tend to use the term "memorabilia" and "collection" vs "toys".

Off Topic / Re: Do you have a fireplace?
« on: September 24, 2021, 10:01:40 PM »
1) Do you have a fireplace?

Yes, 2 of 3 homes I have lived in had them. Most of my relatives houses also had them.

2) Do you use it?

No. The house we live in right now has a gas fireplace and the pipe was capped off by the previous owners. The house has AC/Heat, so there is not really much need for it since the forced air heats other areas of the house. There is a "fake fire" in the fireplace (one of those plug in electrical flickering flames and logs).

With toys being non-essential items during corona AND all the crazy heat waves (That put out the power in the USA, Europe and also China) it's not a super big surprise that the TE gets delayed.
They're a more complicated pony (more complex than anything they did yet) with extra steps so any delay or problem would affect them more than others too.
I'm not shocked but it's still a little disappointing...BUT they're still coming!
It's just a delay!
Spring of 2022 will get here eventually and I will be lining up to grab them. Also, maybe this could help them line up more retailers or something? Did we ever find out where they were planning to sell them now that Target did whatever?

Meh. My boyfriend collects Transformers and they're absolutely popping off. Always a new toy coming out, and they're definitely more complex than TE ponies. I wish Hasbro would put as much care into marketing and selling the g1 ponies as they put into Transformers. I guess MLP just isn't as popular as Transformers.

My husband has a massive Transformers collection. So I hear you on the constant releases. That being said though, there are big differences between what is going on with Transformers verses G1 MLP.

1) Hasbro actually did not invent Transformers. The Japanese toy company Takara did. Takara originally was (and still is) the producer of Transformers in Japan, and they design much of the engineering for Transformers toys. Hasbro imported these products to the US back in the 80's and rebranded them as "Transformers".  Hasbro over the years has continued to import these products made by Takara to the US as "Transformers" branded toys and the two companies have been working together since then. There have been many Transformer toys over the years that were only released by Takara in Japan because Hasbro did not agree to import them into the US or other markets.

2) Hasbro is NOT making the Retro G1 MLP. The toy company Basic Fun is. Hasbro is licensing the ability to use the image/namesake/mold shape/etc to the Basic Fun toy company. Ultimately, it is up to Basic Fun to decide what gets made, what does not and when it comes out.

3)Hasbro is a large toy company with some very established toy lines and has a heavy presence in physical retail stores, various online stores and has their own online store "Hasbro Pulse" (for sales and pre-orders of certain product lines). This allows a wide variety of distribution and product sales opportunities. Basic Fun on the other hand is known as a smaller toy company that makes novelty and retro toys. (It may also be worth mentioning that the toy company "Basic Fun" has come out of multiple mergers of smaller toy companies over the years). From their own home page they state: "We are leaders in toy production and distribution with a focus on collectibles, small dolls, retro toys, pre-school, vehicles, youth electronics, science toys and construction."

Why bring that last part up? Because it matters in regards to product availability and distribution. Less pathways for distribution = less product created. Losing Target is a big hit. Target was the only national retailer that was carrying the MLP Retro line. They are either going to have to find another national retailer to pick up that gap, or try to re-negotiate with Target. Personally, I think they should utilize their Amazon store, but for some reason they don't with the retro MLP.

I'm glad they're trying to work with Target again but I recognize NONE of those retailers as being nearby.

Agreed, hopefully they can get Target to pick them back up. Otherwise it means paying inflated prices on Ebay.

The Dollhouse / Re: Madame Alexander Dolls - Help Needed
« on: July 26, 2021, 05:19:41 PM »
Thank you for the book suggestion. While I was unable to find any specific ones at my local library, I did find one on Amazon that focused solely on the international dolls (and she has a lot of those) and it has been very helpful in identifying various items (shoes, accessories, etc.)  :)

I ended up purchasing a small set of doll bands on Etsy and was able to repair 5 of her dolls pretty easily. So that worked out.

Pony Corral / Re: Are ALL Hallmark 2021 Powder G1 Ornaments BROKEN?
« on: July 19, 2021, 12:27:26 PM »
Is it actually broken or just poorly designed in two pieces?

I have not opened mine yet as it is at my parents house. However, that being said, if everyone is finding the exact same thing, this sounds more like it was a poor design. The ornament was more than likely designed in multiple parts that were then glued together, which creates the line/seam mark. (Especially because everyone is finding the same thing, and also because from your pictures it appears to be a molded piece).

In regards to the Hallmark website images or the ornament box, more than likely, the pictures were of a prototype and/or are probably Photoshopped. Boxes have to be printed way in advance of production, and this is true with many things where the box image may not perfectly match the actual product. If you look closely at the picture on the Hallmark website or even the box (but more obvious on the website) that Powder is shown with a sort of shiny/glistening paint where the real ones are more of a flat matte color.

If the ornament was actually broken during shipping/stocking, you would find the piece loose in the box. I have had new ornaments that were broken inside the box and the parts are just laying loose in the box.

While this is not the comment any of us want to hear, the reality is she can just be turned the other way so the seam is not showing as much.

Off Topic / Re: Banking, Paypal etc.
« on: July 19, 2021, 12:04:11 PM »
Credit Card - I have ONE credit card, same company for about 20 years. I use it all the time because I typically don't carry more than about $20 in cash in my purse, and usually do not carry my checkbook. I pay the bill off every month. I use it everywhere online bills, store purchases, online gaming, etc. My only comment is that you should ALWAYS look at your bill each month to check the charges. I have had my credit card number used fraudulently twice in that time (both times were after it had been "carbon copied" where the stores used to rub it in a machine and take a carbon copy of it if for some reason their machines didn't work - old method of accounting w/ credit cards). Which then you just call the company, speak to a representative in their fraud department and it all gets fixed fairly easily if found right away.

Paypal - I don't have my own, I use my husbands. Mainly it is for Ebay or occasionally Etsy or some other online store. I know Ebay changed their system though awhile back with how they pay funds as a seller (not via Paypal anymore, through their own system). The caution here would be the same as the credit card, check your account for charges that are not yours. I would also limit the amount of money that potentially is sitting there available. (stuff happens, things get hacked or fraud).

Checks - Old school I know, but I do still write checks out for certain bills and mail them. I do not use them much anymore for regular shopping purposes like I used to.

Debit Card - I do not have one, but same as I mentioned above if you do, just check your statements for fraud activity (again, stuff happens). My husband has had this occur a few times over the years.

Pony Corral / Re: How to keep mold away from ponies in storage?
« on: July 15, 2021, 09:32:06 PM »
I might see if I can buy some of those silicon packs online, rather than wait to collect them from things I buy. Summer is our most humid time, so the sooner I find a solution, the better! I'll bet Amazon has them.

In addition to mold, other sad things you might find when you take your ponies out of storage and look them over:

1. The glitter from some of your G1 ponies' symbols might be just gone.

2. You might find regrind on your dark-colored G1 ponies that didn't have it before.

3. Your Divine Shine G3's might have completely lost their glitter (except for their heads).

4. You find a pile of G3 hats and headbands in the bottom of your storage box because over time the elastics just snap and they all fell off the ponies' heads.

:( Oh my poor ponies. But it's not too bad. At least they clean up okay, for the most part. And all the accessories are still here, just need new elastics.

If there's a better solution than rubbermaid totes, I'd love to hear it. Cardboard boxes didn't cut it, I was hoping the rubbermaid totes would be more airtight and condensation wouldn't get in there. :\

My only suggestion is something like small DampRid containers (absorb moisture from the air) to put in the general area where the boxes are stored (like on a shelf NOT in the box with the ponies), but you would have to be able to set it where it won't be disturbed/knocked over and they would need to be checked on/replaced as needed.

Assuming that the ponies are completely dry (aired out overnight for example) when they are put back in the boxes, an interesting experiment might just be cleaning some of them with just water vs. baby wipes and putting them in a separate box as like a "control group". I'd also suggest keeping note of which ones seems to always be moldy to see if there is a pattern (in other words, see if it tends to be the same group).

In regards to #4 - G3 bands snapping on accessories, yup, pretty much all mine have broken. The same thing happens with Ariel dolls, the clear rubber straps on her shell bra get brittle and disintegrate over time and with Barbie hair rubber bands on older dolls.

I think I need at least one of those for my toys.... either Batman and Robin or Back to the Future. I can totally see them being done with other shows if they sell well.

The Dollhouse / Madame Alexander Dolls - Help Needed
« on: July 12, 2021, 02:25:21 PM »
Backstory: My mother-in-law has a very large collection of Madame Alexander dolls from across multiple decades and ranging in a variety of sizes. Quite a lot of them were removed from their original boxes (boxes were kept, she flattened them all for storage reasons). Because of various health reasons she can't physically do much (she is not bedridden, but does have to spend almost all her time laying down) and her eye-sight is not the greatest at this point. So the process of identifying the dolls and trying match the dolls to their boxes (or wrist tags that were removed) is up to me and my husband.

Does anyone know of any good identification sites to help identify doll lines or which years they may have been produced in? I know that the names of the dolls are often on the dress, but a number of them were produced multiple times in different but similar outfits. (Betsy Ross, so far I have found 3 versions in her collection, but no way to identify the year) or ones like "Little Women" were produced so many times as well as the "international" type dolls.

Also, the rubber bands inside some of them need to be replaced. Has anyone ever replaced these, and do you have a specific place you get the rubber bands from? I have watched a couple youtube videos and it seems simple enough, but wondered if anyone had personal experience doing it and if there was a specific place online that you prefer the bands from.

Lastly, if anyone knows the difference between a "bent knee" and a "walker" Madame Alexander doll and how to identify them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still sad about Powder and Skyflier as they're the last two from the y2/3 pegasus and unicorns. Bearing in mind that Hasbro didn't release those here at all in the eighties, it's been nice to see them in stores here now. But not those two. Powder was always a favourite of mine as a kid, too.

If she's the hallmark ornament, though, I will probably try and get it. I've not bothered with any of the previous, because of import costs, but Powder and Snowflake are really nostalgic for me. I still have a christmas card from when I was a kid with Powder on and both Powder and Snowflake were always in the comic a lot around that time of year. I had Snowflake as a kid, but yeah, no Powder. It would be nice to put her on the tree at least :)

The Hallmark ornaments were just made available this last weekend, so she is out and available now (unlike some ornaments that are not released until later this year).

Good point Taffeta about the specific poses. Interestingly enough though Powder is the Hallmark MLP retro ornament for this year. I'll just be happy if the TE's make it through production and into distribution. Now finding them once that happens will be a different dynamic.

Many great suggestions above, so just adding a couple more here.

Local swap meets are a possible place to look, keep in mind it may also be a bust, but if you go once you will know what kind of stuff is offered. Another possibility is to google "toy and collectible shop" to see if anything pops up in your general area. This is a hit and miss method, but can introduce you to new places. I like to use this method sometimes and then click the website link for the different places to see if any sound promising. My husband and I have actually done this while traveling on vacation just for the fun of it and we have ended up finding some places as we travel that had things we were interested in and brought things home with us (granted we tend to drive verses fly, so more room in the car for random purchases).
