Pony Corral / Re: The mythology of Ribbon and Lofty...
« on: August 27, 2015, 04:37:43 AM »
Both versions of Baby Heart Throb came out here. I have picked up both from the UK, though no wings is more common. Baby was ilkustrated with wings in all UK related art. I guess it didn't matter to distributers since we had no mother pony...but she too was aleays winged hearted.

Baby Shady was a big miss though, being that she had the most developed comic persona of the six.

I didn't know she was sold in UK as well! Never heard of it before, and I have never seen her on ebay from UK at all during these past 10 years that I have looked for her. It's always the other version. I have only seen her from Germany and Sweden, quite often too.

Could probably be that you got her as a very late batch then in a small quantity in the end of 1986 before they got discontinued. We got our set a bit later than you got them, they where available in the end of 1986 and beginning of 1987, and hasbro had changed her to the other version by then to match the mummy.
I think they must have done that just because we actually had the mummy both in Germany (as Italian ) and in Sweden. It probably didn't matter so much in UK as the fable ponies didn't get released there.  :)

I focus on G1. (I do have some G2 G3 and G4, but I don't really collect them I just own them).

I love all the G1's and I want to complete each set with their accessories. I focus on completing my favorite set's first though. And I only ad a pony to my collection if it looks fresh from the package. I don't want ponies that others have played with, I want them to be like how they would have been if I had been the first owner as a kid, original curls and everything.. :) And I don't like fixing up ponies unless it's a project that I'm going to sell.

And I love the hunt for perfect ponies! So I never use place holders that I upgrade. :)

If Hasbro cared about that we'd also have had Heart Throb xD. Clearly Hasbro didn't care at all about orphaned baby ponies or confused kids this side of the pond xD.

At least we had a mummy for our baby Heart Throb in Sweden, from the Fable Ponies (and the baby got wings on her hearts too to look like her mum, I love that they changed her just because of that!). The UK baby Heart Throb has only hearts as symbol, just as the BBE counterpart. (who matches the SS Heart Throb mum )

I really wish they had made a Ribbon mum for the baby! :) Here in Sweden Fable pony Gusty is the natural mum for Baby Gusty as they where available at the same time. The Movie Stars came just a bit later though.
But I have always wondered why they decided to go with baby Ribbon and not baby Shady in the Play and Care set (if they now had to skip out on 2 characters)...

...and collectors that already have spent a lot on her wouldn't want the price to drop, they want to sell her again for what they spent on her. :)

Congrats! :D
I want one someday too! I have the Windy fakie (same pose but purple and with a blue windy symbol). There are really cool!

This has confused me for ages now!

I have seen the french flutters with gold trimmed ribbons, and thought of it as a european thing. I have always assumed that US got colored metallic ribbons for their second set of flutters (as I bought a Wind Drifter and Cloud Puff with them from the US). But now you say that this is the other way around..
( :freak: ) ..I just need them all!, but I don't know what I need!

(Side note: The windy wing ponies came with the gold trimmed ribbons as well in Europe. The US ones didn't have any ribbons.)

(Hoping for close-ups of MIB's to be posted now)

If I remember correctly Wavedancer is from 1984 and Wavebreaker is from 1985. ;) And in that way Seaspray could have been inspired by High Tide or the opposite  (pink hair/yellow body) ;)

Yeah, I was just being cheeky. I know they were the other way around, although based on the fact stories started to happen in the UK from 1985, and the fact there are no stories on the Sea Pony boxes, I think they are probably 1984-5, like the Rainbow Ponies, rather than straight 1985. Their box is dated 1984.  They may even be the first Hasbro UK deviation. Who knows? Unfortunately I no longer have the MIB Sealight I used to have so can't compare directly, but the art is very different from the US package as well, and it does include instructions on how to braid hair! Hasbro UK still obsessed with braiding, even if they have to change the graphic to make it a sea pony instead!

I don't think Seaspray has anything to do with High Tide, honestly...the Fact File features four of the year 3 Sea Ponies but none were sold here as far as I can tell. I don't think High Tide is one of them, so there seems to be no real connection between her and the UK at all. Easier to just sell High Tide here, rather than make your own...

Seaspray and Surfdancer are not in the fact file, nor is Wavebreaker.

Yeah, I was just being cheeky.
 yes I know! Just wanted to make it clear for everybody else here since it is a common mistake to think of them as available at the same time as the first US sea ponies, being so similar otherwise ( a set of 3 sea ponies, one looking just like the US one).

No probably not, :) but it is fun that two yellow sea ponies with pink hair occurred at the same time!

I think they are probably 1984-5
As they are a part of the 1985 insert, I place them with that range of ponies, if they occurred earlier than the rest of the 1985 range is hard to know unless we find other advertising (or the official Hasbor UK catalog that retailers could order from). But most packages has a copyright stamp a year earlier than the release due to them being designed a year before they are ready to be sold. :)

Seaspray and Surfdancer you mean I presume :) Wavebreaker is the same pony as Wavedancer. Only her shell is different.

I think of her as a own character rather than a renamed US one. :)

But I couldn't ever use a nice Wavebreaker as an upgrade for a poor Wavedancer. That would feel so wrong, they simply are different ponies that can't take each others place. ;)

(And Wavebreaker is still a UK exclusive just as Megan in the different outfit is ;) )

Of course, Wavebreaker is the original and Wavedancer is the rename. *runs away innocently before someone kicks her*

The ponies are the same pony, though in terms of issue release they came with different stuff. I see it like Princess Pearl came with different stuff but is still the same basic pony as Princess Tiffany. In this house, there is only one of the two. She is Wavebreaker, as she came from here. I don't have any interest in acquiring Wavedancer xD. I don't have her box, but on Seaspray's and Surfdancer's she's Wavebreaker and that's good enough for me. The purple shell is Seaspray's anyway.

If I remember correctly Wavedancer is from 1984 and Wavebreaker is from 1985. ;) And in that way Seaspray could have been inspired by High Tide or the opposite  (pink hair/yellow body) ;)

But yes there are many accessory variations for ponies. Still a exclusive though with the yellow shell. ;)

I think of her as a own character rather than a renamed US one. :) If she had a symbol that had been copied it would have been a bit different, but now she just share the same colors with her US cousin sort of. ;) But that is just my personal view of it, she is clearly inspired by the US one and most likely the same pony in different surroundings.

I'm not sure about Baby Bow Tie, either. I'm not even sure why. There is at the very least the Spanish version in the other pose, and she came with a stroller and on card...
I have been investigating this for so long now, and I haven't ever found any evidence about her being sold elsewhere (except the spanish variation). And I'm able to exclude her from quite many countries pony range now.  I have sort of put her as an UK exclusive until proven otherwise that she was a official part in another countries pony range.
Unofficial imports can happen though.

UK exclusives are Gypsy, Honeycomb, Short/straight haired Cherries Jubilee, Cascade, the activity Club Babies, baby Bow-Tie, Megan & Sundance in the pants/skirt outfit..

..and probably the 3 adult sea ponies, that also got italian counterparts.

I might have forgotten someone now, but most other ponies UK shared with other countries. :)

(Hopscotch was sold in some europeans countries)

Interesting that Shady is not a Movie pony in that image, even though she was a Movie Pony. Unless, of course, she wasn't sold as a Movie Pony in Sweden but only as a Pony Friend? Just because she's on the card, we've really learned that doesn't mean anything at all.

Oh, she was! I'm 100% positive as I have seen her on the Movie Star card here in Sweden (with the brown eyeliner) The wole set got discovered in that old toy shop I mentioned before (where I got my Trickles, and my Bride Confetti)

I have just never seen her on the Pony Friends card. But this advertising kind of proves it. I think they where sold just in the early spring of 1987 but got discontinued before the autumn. And maybe that's why they aren't on the club poster (the only characters not represented is Cupcake and Truly though) so they might just have missed them when putting it together.

Also the Play and Care babies II got sold at the same time as the Pony Friends, but baby Blossom is the one that represent the PaC set on the ad. It could be that both I and II was sold at the same time in the spring 1987 and they just randomly picked Baby Blossom to represent them.

( Play and Care I was avaliable in 1986 too, but not the Pac II set)

Should I assume from that advert that your set matched theirs or was it a mix and match set?
I haven't found out so much about the baby Sea Ponies yet. But it could be that we got the US version of card and ponies. I will have to investigate that a bit more though! But as the picture was taken here in Sweden it could be like that, but the ad has lot's of small errors everywhere, so I could be that a batch of ponies got shipped to them for photograps before the release that didn't match properly.
I will continue digging for proofs! ;) I haven't found any MOC baby Sea Pony at all in Sweden so far.

I love learning about releases in different areas. Ponyland, I wonder if I might be really cheeky and ask whether I can borrow the images of your Pony Friend CJ and Posey for the Scrapbook? I would like to reorganise my 1987 page a little so that Truly and Cupcake are a little more clearly defined as separate. I can't put a complete separate page for the set, but at the very least I can make the distinction (and I think that it would be awesome to have the Pony Friend CJ on the CJ page with Groom & Style and 1986 My Little Pony C.J!

I think that could be arranged. ;) it's kind of important to me that they get represented properly, and that they are a 1987 release that is different from the Movie Stars, as they where sold along side each other and not instead of or as an exteintion of them.

It would also be great if they could be linked together with your UK set with Gypsy in some way with the reusing of the card but a year later and the Hopscotch character (but the ditching of Snowflake in favor of Cupcake and Truly).

This is how the toy catalogs look like from our official distributor in Sweden.
Left one is for spring 1987 and right is for autumn 1987

Here is the content:

1987 Spring toy catalog:
Features Shady mentioned as a "Standard Pony" (should be from Pony Friends), Magic Star as a Movie Pony.
Baby Blossom from Play and Care I, Baby Firefly from Baby ponies with bottle, and baby Lemon Drop (UK version but with pink stroller). And Flutterbye, probably from the standing type of card that I got.
Also Megan & Sundance in box, Pretty and Pearly baby Sea ponies, the Pony Purse and Lullabye Nursery.

This is the advertising that introduce Ponnyklubben (it was PLAYMIX that managed it). After sign up to it the
poster was sent out.

The 1987 autumn catalog I posted earlier.
Movie ponies, Rainbow ponies, Baby Lemon Drop as Spainsh with pink stroller, Megan & Sundance, Pretty and Pearly baby sea ponies, and Baby Buggy. Also first introduction of Paradise Estate.

An ad for December introduce the Adventure Boys and the dance school (incorrect pony though, should be a regular baby Half Note, not a BBE). Also mentions Paradise estate again, and lot's of ponies are standing in it. I think the picture of it was taken at the same time as the introduction of it in the autumn catalog.

I find it interesting how those characters appeared all across Europe and in our comics and merchandise but not in UK stores. Aside from Confetti's Wedding Bells, none of set 2 were ever sold here, which makes me wonder what Hasbro UK's decision processes were for ponies in this country. First set Rainbows are quite common and almost certainly did 1984 and 1985 because their UK release card style is 1984ish without a story...so why did Hasbro UK only sell Confetti and not try for any of the others?

It could be just as with the Fable Ponies, I think that it was probably planned that you should get the standing card's too that we got here. They look very similar to your version of the first set of Rainbow Ponies and is made by Hasbru UK.

We got Confetti in 1986 too, and she kind of introduced the whole pony range with her big wedding that every pony was invited to at the Dream castle. I don't have the ad avaliable (it's stuffed with my other ads that I can't reach). And along side her the other rainbow ponies were sold (probably on the standing card).

75
Your rainbow set is interesting - two from year 1 and four from year 2! Is the card noticeably different for them?

We got them in 2 rounds. On the US released card and on a different "standing" card that looks similar to the german card but with HK ponies and english text. I Bought Tickle from an old toy store here on the US card, and I have Flutterby on the standing card from a original swedish collection.

So we did get more characters in the end (I have Windy as a childhood pony). I will have to see if there was anyone we missed out on though, its a bit murky right now from my memory.
But the toy advertising catalog that I have from the old toy store (where I bought Tickle on the american card) do mention a range of 6 different characters, so I think the poster is correct on that for 1987. And I think that the 6 different characters you see there on the club poster was sold on the US released card, and it isn't different in the artwork. So they just picked out half the available characters on that card then for our release.

Quote
Not to mention Megan in North American release costume...

Yes she was an official part of our pony range, the one you got is an UK exclusive.  :) I will dig out more advertising for you.
