Customs / All New Year's tradition- what was Panda doing in 2022
« on: January 27, 2023, 05:45:21 AM »
As you know I post every year what I have done the year before. My first source for uploading pics is and stays deviantart. So if you know where to find me (https://www.deviantart.com/customsbypandabear) you can see me posting there new stuff regularly.

2022 was ... other than the years before. You probably know I'm doing mostly Hasbro replicates. But that brought me to a point last year where I said: Nope - I'm done.
Done for being commissioned with the 60th regular Rapunzel, the 3rd Baby Nightglider, the xth this or that. I didn't have fun in doing this anymore, so I quit from taking commissions officially. It was a big relief but necessary.
It was the beginning of a new chapter in life "Do the things you love when you want, for whom you want and what you want.

So the first goal was to have some ponies in order to present (and hopefully sell) at the Germany pony con in Düsseldorf in July. I was wrong - most of them went in an instant.

Prototype Nightlight, Raindrop and Moonstone as being advertised on the German rainbow's backcard.

Then I tested more things with the electrostatic gun: fiber sizes/density and glues mostly

Baby North Star, Newborn Buttons, Baby Firefly with a darker blue hair color and a new interpretation of Milky Way

Finally I started some own projects!

Peachy- She never appeared to me with her heart symbols, so I gave her a "very peachy" makeover

Universe Boy - Yeah clever name but I'm not good at giving names. This one was done as my version of a HQG1C Pony that was teased years ago (2015) but didn't made it into production so far. He has tiny gitd bits inside his body, being dyed and during the day he impresses with his glorius hair as well as his incredibly stunning color-shifting symbols.

The last thing I started were 2 new repro accessories. Stands and guitars / keytars because hey these 80ths girls need some glam in their lives don't they?

These are by far not all I have done but give a small inside what is possible. I make the stands occasionally 4x a year in larger badges - the next one in February - so if you like, drop me a message here and let me know in case you want one.

Thank you for reading until here - this year will be filled mostly with own projects. Can't wait to start! :satisfied:

Customs / Re: Gauging interest - We use the same things and make a custom

That is a real interesting idea. It would be fun to see how people interpret things using the same material/ color/ theme etc. I'd be away on vaccation 2 weeks in March but would have some time otherwise.

MLP Nirvana / Re: Why are Takara Ponies (from Japan) so hard to find?
« on: September 06, 2022, 05:08:17 AM »
You will very rarely find them for sale on eBay. I bought mine from another collectors, this is how most people acquire Takara's. There are auction site in Japan, and Takara's do pop up for sale on them, but there is still competition for them and they will still go for in a region of $800-2000 USD.

The Takara ponies were only made for one year (1986 I believe), and not many were made before the line was discontinued. There is just isn't the same volume of them compared to "regular" release or even some "nirvana" ponies that were produced between 1983-1994.

Love pkw xxx

Pinkkittywinks is absolutely on point here.

In general Hasbro made a trade with the company Takara Tomy in the 80s. While Takara got the ability to produce their own ponies known as "Osharena Ponies" (Osharena is the Japanese word for elegant) - Hasbro got the ability to produce Transformers. Takara ponies were only sold in 1985 (almost right @pinkkittywinks ;) ) and sold only in Japan. Japanese people tend to throw stuff away rather than keeping it. Therefore a lot of Takaras might gone missing over the decades.

They are sold on Japanese pages now and then (perhaps 3-4 per year). You need good connections to get one of them and in can take a very long time. It took me about 4-5 years to get the 6 I own now.

Does anyone know how many hanks a styling size G3 takes?

I've never made one, only stripped a couple. I suppose I can figure it out from the hair I saved from them... but if anyone knows, I'd appreciate it.

It depends on the length of hair to be used. But for my MlP x Popples G3s I used 3 hanks of white which was then dyed in several colours.

Customs / Doll hair supplier matches for G1 ponies
« on: July 23, 2022, 08:49:00 AM »
Hey,

I finished a project I'm working on for years now. You know that I did a lot of Hasbro inspired customs and probably too that I do restorations as well. Therefore I always needed perfect matches. So I created a matching guide with suppliers that I bought hair from. I included Thedollyhairemporium (UK), Dollyhair (US), mylittlecustom (UK) and shimmerlocks (US). Mylittlecustom carries the same hair as Dollyhair. The hair type is 99% nylon and 1% kiwi.

A few ponies are not matched yet (these are marked) but right now I didn't have the correct hair color or the pony itself to match them. If you did by chance, you're welcome to send me a PM and I can add it there.

The link can be viewed best from a computer. Phone is useable too but it's not so perfect.

Have a lot of fun using it and I hope you can use it for your projects.

All the best
Panda

Customs / Re: Your supply list!
« on: March 22, 2022, 02:31:55 AM »
Panda, the info about your airbrush is interesting! I have whatever came with my Paache, three sizes of needle, a couple of paint jars and the friction paint cup. I've always wanted to get more jars for premixed paint.

Powder pigments are also something I've always wanted to try.

Your list makes me remember some things I forgot to add.

Yes I pretty much adapted my hobby supplies with the experiences from my work life. These Eppendorf Tubes I used in a lab, are just so easy to use and paint gets stored for such a long time. If you cover the lids even with so called Parafilm they will last even longer.

Powder pigments are great for metallic symbols (I use PearlEx from Jacard) but I discovered recently color-shifting pigments (Chameleon from Let's Resin) that I haven't used yet.

In case you ever need something that I can get easier in Germany feel free to send a PM and maybe you can get something for me from the US?

I'm so cheeky and copy your list BlackCurtains (it's pretty complete) and will add/ remove a few things for me:

I try to start from the beginning and go into each branch I offer.

- Baits: G1 and G3 mostly but also some Takara fakies as well as some other bits and pieces. These include for sure the HQG1C ponies too.
- Instruments: various needle nose pliers, tweezers, artery clamps, Cutter, Side cutters, etc.
- Chemicals: 100% Ethanol and Acetone (for cleaning), Hydrogen peroxide (for sun fading)
- Cleaning materials: Ear swaps and Cotton pads, old hand and teeth brushes, Magic erasers
- Hair! Nylon for 90% as well as multiple spools of tinsel (Sulky Sliver Metallic / Holographic brand from Gütermann), 10% original pony hair (mostly tails) for restorations only
- Rehairing materials: Rehairing tool from Pop-Girl (former member here),  rerooting needles (Prym brand), old metal washes of all types of countries (for restoration purposes), cable ties,
- Glues! A cheap one for securing hair in the mane as well as a special brand for glueing back heads on the body
- Cosmetic goods: flat iron (Udo Waltz by Beurer), regular shampoo (Japanese hotel showering gel is preferred as it really cleans the hair), conditioner (Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moisture), Japanese hotel brush for wet hair
- Styling materials: Foam rollers, round wood sticks, hair crabs, rubber hair bands, various ribbons

Dyeing

- Dyeing powders and liquids: RitDye (powder) and RitDye More (liquid), Dylon Dye, IDye Poly

Painting and Airbrushing

- Paints:! Acrylics (Model Color from Vallejo) for brush painting as well as Createx (different color types) for airbrushing, Star Dust paints (Vallejo) for color-shifting effects via airbrush and Alclad Chrome paint as base for achieving metal like finishes
- Airbrushing materials: Compressor, 2in1 Evolution airbrush gun from Haarder&Steenbeck, Extraction System for excessive paint dusts, 2 - 5 ml Eppendorf tubes with caps (perfect for mixing and storing paint mixes), Eppendorf-like pipette for airbrush cleaning or picking up small color amounts from my mixing palette,
- Powdered Pigments: Various brands for mixing into transparent varnishes and use as metall or color-shifting finishes
- Varnishes: UV resistant ones from Deco Art (Americana DuraClear Ultra matte and glossy)
- Masking Materials: Washi Tape as well as Liquid Masking Film (Vallejo)
- Paint brushes: Different brands, shapes etc., brush cleaner (The Masters brand) and brush conserver (can't find the brand currently)

Sculpting

- Sculpting Clays: Apoxie Sculpt (Aves Studio) as well as Fimo (to achieve different effects like glow in the dark, etc.), Fuwa Fuwa Clay (brand from Japan) which is ultralight i.e. for feathers

MLP Nirvana / Re: What are your Nirvana Pony wishes for 2022?
« on: March 21, 2022, 03:00:17 AM »
I'm looking for the Mountain Boy Lightning, without a head / body mismatch. I'm also trying to grow my Macau ponies...i'd quite like all the CP Macau's eventually!

I have a Macau Palomino Cotton Candy if you still need her?

As for me I'm loosely looking for the last adult Takara I'm missing - as always.

72
I found at least the purple, yellow and mint one in a German store last week. I picked some up additionally for friends and kept one purple and the mint one.

73
that diva toola-roola/kimono/wysteria is perfect!! ever thought about making a custom of winter variant cute curtsey? she's a prototype too, and i've always wished she wasn't, lol
http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Cute_Curtsey#Winter_Variant

Oh yes I just need a carriage which might be difficult to find for a good price as it needs some changes in color. I'd only need a white bait for her.

74
In general Spanisch Ponies tend to have a softer version of the hair colors their US release counterpart has. So if you have a US Starflower, check if their peach streaks are the same.

Peach Sorbet from Shimmerlocks is a blend (I don't know from which colors), so if you don't mind I'd order a sample and take a look if it matches.

Dollyhair's match for the original peach color is called Peaches n Cream, however during the years it has changed and is now too light to be a good match anymore, so it might have the right color for your girl. It's maybe worth to check out Peach Cobbler as well as Apricot from Dollyhair - these are similar.

If you rehair the peach colored streak completely it's maybe okay to be a tad outside the correct range.
