MLP Nirvana / Re: Community veterans: How were nirvanas discovered?
« on: December 31, 2018, 09:22:54 AM »
As pinkkittywinks said, nirvanas (tbh I really don't like that term) were the regular ponies kids had in those countries. Plus many people didn't know/don't know English so the information wasn't easy to pass on/get.

I have a lot of variants from my childhood and I remember the confusion years ago when I discovered that my Sugarberry, Milkyway or Cupido weren't exactly the same as the ones shown on ID websites. I thought we all had the same ponies. For me, the "exotic" ponies are the ones sold in US only  :P

Pony Corral / Re: What ponies did you get for Christmas as a kid?

I can't remember well how many I got for Christmas but at least I think these were:

Barnacle, Steamer, Sugarberry, Cupido, Baby Lemon Drop, Baby Tiddley-Winks or Baby Moondancer and the Kitchen.

Not sure about the amount of Mexican Nibbles & Dibbles but I can help with the names. They were called Nib and Dib... I know, not very original  I saved a pic of the box while ago (not mine)

Actually, it seems that only 2 pair os twins were published in Mexico (the ones that are named in the box) but the company didn't bother to make a new picture so I think its kind of cruel. I imagine kids would've wanted other twins showed in the box and the confusion of not finding them anywehere

In Spain, at least, no twins were published ever. Only the single newborn ponies, such a pity!

Spain - were there regular TEs as well as Spanish ones? What card art does Spain use?

Spain 100% sold Spanish TEs. Regular ones are rare in the wild/second hand here, and the answer I usually get for these is that they were purchased/gifted on holidays trip and such.

The card is the same as the UK, but with different comb (moon one for all). Example, not my picture:

The card says 1987, but the ponies feet say 1986. Only the first set were sold in Spain.

She cleaned up amazingly!  No rubs to her paint/blushing, her hair is fine and still pink, ahh!  Really, the only thing really wrong with her seems to be a bit of orange/red staining on her throat.

Even then it's not super distracting, and I could always sun fade her at some point.  She's just such a delightful pony, I'm so fond of her!

Could the stain be a factory 'error'? It has the same color as the blush, at least it looks like it in the picture. So maybe is something like that.  I have a few ponies that have factory paint/blush in other places of the body by error/slip and I find it funny in the good sense.

But hang on, that German box...isn't it the same as the UK box from 1986 (at least the front)? In German? In a Spanish ad? With TAF Megan and Sundance in it? Either they just shoved whatever they had together, or something very odd went on in Europe with that set o.o.

Ha! I did notice she was the TAF version but not that she was in a diferent box  I can't find any German box to compare, welp... Its not the only German or foreigner thing MB offered to little Spanish girls. I found two catalogs where they raffled very limited numbers of Paradise States and some Prize Day & Picnic Day ponies (and from what I can see I think they're the German variant). Nonetheless I've never seen these ponies/playset in Spain, nor in second-hand markets. The description to get them, already says it all.

"And even more ... if you send another 2 horseshoes and 175 pesetas (1,05€) on stamps you can get one of these 2 ponies unpublished in Spain.".

I leave them here, I think you'd find them interesting (not my pics, though).

Anyway, talking about NCs, I'm quite skeptical with the NCs Sundae Best Ponies, Windy Wings, etc are made in Spain. They're exactly the same as the international versions and don't have the typical traits of Spanish ponies apart from the country removal. But they were definitely sold in Spain (and the card says 'made in Spain'...) so I don't know what was happening  :dizzy:

But we have some questions about whether they are always made in Spain or not. And there are a lot of other NC ponies not made in Spain, but Sundance and the family ponies are usually associated with Spanish. Even though we really don't know for sure. (Sundance's box for 1986 I think says made in Hong Kong but I can check that if need be. I have the image here somewhere.).

Funny enough Sundance was never released in Spain, as fas as I know. There is a Spanish pamphlet in which 100 Megan and Sundances were raffled and the box shown is the German one, but I don't know anyone who got it that can provide some detail

Both NC and HK Loving Families were released in Spain (and I think all cards say made in Spain). I have an UK card of NC Daddy Bright Bouquet and it says Made in Spain, that may be the reason.

Oh my! I went to check mine and she used to have drops too! Only appreciated in the light, I didn't notice at all and I thought she was the non drops version!

It makes sense the color was the same as Milky Way, so it fades away.
I'm pretty sure lhaldimann's is a Spanish (real) non drop variant, just a very yellowed one. Most of, if not all, my yellowed Spanish ponies look shiny too.

PD: By the way, My Little Wiki has a pic of a non drops symbols version!

There are 3 different Spanish Trickles, one with glittery symbols, other non glittery and the 3rd one non glittery without drops. She was released twice, first in a nameless series around 1986 with Starflower shown on the card and the second release as 'Pony Arco Iris' with Flutterbye pictured in 1988. But I'm not sure which variant was marked Spain or NC in which card (or just random, like the TAFs). It's harder to find Spain marked ones.

I have no drops NC Trickles and the symbols looks like Taffeta's.

I can't see very well the face of the darker Trickles to appreciate the eyes but maybe is a very yellowed Spanish one? I found 2 on eBay sold recently with very similar symbols (both from the same French seller).

NC Trickles 1

NC Trickles 2

I haven't noticed before, but maybe there are no 3, but 4 variants?  :P

*Baby Quackers - Bebé Patito Feo > Baby Ugly Duckling

WOW, that is amazing.

Poor baby Quackers :haha:

@Perikoala, wow, all those names! I think Baby Quackers' is my favourite. Poor Baby Ugly Duckling

I know, right? I wonder if the second set of TEs had been available in Spain, maybe Quackers would have been named Uglu Duckling? It would have been hilarious!

@Perikoala, wow, all those names! I think Baby Quackers' is my favourite. Poor Baby Ugly Duckling
Do you know if Majesty, Baby Cuddles, Wind Whistler or the Princess Ponies (Sapphire/Royal Blue, Tiffany/Pearl etc) ever had their names translated into Spanish? I don't think they were sold in Spain, but I wonder if they might have popped up in the cartoons, comics or whatever.

Sadly, as you suspected, those ponies were never sold in Spain, so its hard to know how they'd be named, unless you take it as 'canon' the names in the cartoon. And the cartoon is something funny here because there were 2 different dubs in Spain. The first one was in Castilian Spanish (aired only once I think, so its hard to find. No DVDs :( ) and the second in Latin Spanish.
The Castilian one the names were translated (in Latin the names were in English) and even thought some ponies were true to their Spanish names, others changed theirs; like Sweet Stuff instead of being called Goloso (Sweet Tooth) like her toy version, is called Caramelo (Caramel) so yeah...

I only could find 1 episode in castilian on YT, and fortunately Wind Whistle is in there and her name is Vendaval (Gale).

We had some tale books too but I don't own any yet so I don't know how the ponies are named but once looking at my cousin's sticker album, I found that Lemon Drop is called Suspiro, her piggy's name and I think that's very cute!  ^.^

"Barnacle - Barbarroja > Barbarossa/Red Bear"  (Beard?)

Barnacle is Red Beard ? Again, weird but fits him..

I'm pretty sure its because Barbarrosa was a pirate and since Barnacle has a pirate hat and a treasure symbol... I think is pretty cool!

It's funny since the Kitchen often did have random ponies chucked in there, or sold with the set through different store offers. But I'm not sure they ever put Cookery ponies in there...

I had the Kitchen for Christmas with a teeny weeny pony inside the box. I hope she wasn't planning to cook...

Oh! So the Kitchen included a pony in UK? That's interesting. I noticed Grooming Parlour included Kiss Curl but she was never sold in Spain with the set, I don't know why... Only a bunch of playsets were available here and the Pretty Parlour and the Show Stable were the only ones that came with a pony.
