Pony Brag Arena / Thrifting luck- G3 and G1!
« on: July 27, 2014, 04:48:42 PM »
So I've had the longest drought on finding ponies in the while- several months without even a G3 in bad shape, and 1 G4.  Today my hubby and I went out thrifting for other things just for fun and look what happened!

Several cute G3 babies and a couple of nice adults as well.  I'll have to look up names...

And...G1's!  I guess the pony gods only give you ponies when you stop looking?  This Cotton Candy is better than the one in my collection!  And I've never seen Hippity Hop or Magic Star in person before :)

My anniversary is tomorrow, so I think having my husband with me brought me good luck  :lovey:

She's beautiful!  And how lovely that you will have the stable to match  :)

  So, I know several of us on the forum sometimes browse and buy from the Goodwill auction site, whenever their shipping costs don't work out to be to crazy :P

Last week I purchased an American girl doll from them.  Unlike the pony lots, which are grab bag, this one was for one doll, with photos and a description of 'light wear'.   I was super disappointed to have her arrive yesterday with her thumb chewed off!  Not just a few chew marks, mind you- it's gone, with chew marks on the hand and a rough stub.

I went back to the webpage and checked the auction link again, thinking I must have made a mistake and missed that detail...nope :(  Not only that, but now that I know about her thumb I can see how it's somewhat carefully not pictured in any of the photos.     I've contacted them via email, but their site says that returns are considered on a 'case by case basis'.   To me chewed off fingers are definitely not 'light wear', but I'm worried they'll tell me that it's tough luck.

I did also look into the American Girl hospital, but to replace a limb they replace the whole body, it looks like(?), which cost 44.00 on top of shipping.  That plus shipping plus the original price means that I could have almost purchased a doll brand new

Has anyone here had to return anything from an online Goodwill auction? I've never been unhappy with them before.

**Update- I am super excited! I heard back from them today via email (and I only sent my email this morning).  If I want to return the doll they will send a prepaid shipping envelope and give me a full refund when they receive her back...or  if I still want to keep her they will give me a 50% refund.  I'm still bummed she was messed up, but I'm please with their offer.  If I get the 50% refund that covers the cost of a new arm.    :P

This seems like really nice customer service to me- no back and forth about it being 'As-Is' and I don't have to eat the cost of shipping.  I'm relieved- I guess you just start to expect bad service after a while, so this was a nice surprise.   :frolic:

Agree with listing individually- or at least splitting them into boys, flutters, babies...

Might want to take better pictures too- well lit- comb the ponies hairs and clean them up. Take photos of each side of the ponies.  The picture as it is could hide anything, so you won't be able to get more than bait pricing.

This is really good advice, too.  I think when you sell to arena folk you can take fewer pics, as we tend to trust each other's descriptions more in a collecting community.  When I put things up for sale on Ebay I have to remember to take more and better photos, as buyers there have much less of an idea of how trustworthy or knowledgeable I might be.

I like ebay when I want it to sell and don't want to trade, etc, especially for common ponies that most people here already have   However, since I use Paypal at Ebay there is often a hold on the money until the item arrives at the buyers', so if you need money fairly fast you might try selling here first.

I like the idea of leaving a spreadsheet.  My only concern is that dealing with my collection not be a burden.  I've watched family members struggle to figure out what to do with the stuff from loved ones that have died- it can turn into a big heartache for them.  I don't know that the money my smallish collection could sell for would compensate for my husband or daughter worrying and working to sell it properly.

They could definitely keep a few if they wanted, but I guess I really don't care as long as they do whatever is best for them.

I've never seen that MIB- lovely :)

As for wondering at prices...I think it's important to remember that we are all spending more than we need to, in that we spend anything all.  After all, none of us need small plastic ponies! (Regardless of what our inner voice tells us :P)

MiRaja, I do like your point about viewing them as investment pieces, although investing in luxury items is always tricky, isn't it? Prices can go up and down based almost completely on whim (no bottom cost such as you might see on food or shelter items).  I do see vintage toy booths more and more as I go antiquing now, though, and auctions on true antiques (like your dolls) often go for what seem like amazing prices. And considering that 'packaging', per se, is a relatively newish thing, items still in package that are 'vintage' are really just now coming onto the market.  Things are always worth what people are willing to pay for them, since that's the definition!  Hmm, maybe I do need to try to buy some MIB items...

who's that unicorn in the top photo at the top middle shelf with the  molded hair?
the non MLP one?

So I don't think she's 'anyone' technically- I have a vivid memory of getting to pick out 1 toy at a dollar store when I was 5 or so, and I picked a unicorn like that.  The original is long gone but when I was that one on Ebay I had to have it! :inlove:  She's a hard vinyl with airbrushed color.

Thanks, everyone! It's fun to share with other people who love ponies  :satisfied:

I've recently gotten a couple of lots that I felt went a bit cheaper than usual, although that's always opinion .  I don't think it's major drop, though- just summer slowness.  If you are worried about selling for the most money, maybe wait until around October?  Thinks always pick up a bit around Christmastime.

Lovely! I especially like the way you've photographed them all around the Estate, like they are hanging out and you just caught them with your camera ;)

Pony Brag Arena / My Collection so far :)

I realized that I've been on the arena for over a year, but never posted pictures of my actual collection!  It's small but I really like it (I guess that's a given ) and it actually displays pretty nicely in my closet with some shelves I found at Goodwill.

Ponies that I remember having as a child (and that started my collecting, as I decided to hunt them down) are on the top two of the tiered shelves, and the rest are mainly celestial G1s or the collector pose ponies.  Of course a few special ponies have stayed even though they don't fit the pattern- some you just can't let go once you have them, like the super white Gusty I lucked into in a large pony lot.  And now that I have Nightglider and Dancing Butterflies, I decided I needed the TAFs...and a gifted Glo n' Show got me started on them...it's a slippery slope  :P

I just wanted to share my little collection!

Well, here she is looking much better  ^.^

I had to do some work the help get her back into shape- she's so large that the boiling water fill helped but didn't do the whole thing.  I wound up stuffing her with fabric and setting her in the sun.  It softened the plastic around the shape I wanted and helped her fill out again!  After that it was mostly spending time with acetone and Q-tips- she had so many random marks, most of which came out.  She still needs some sunfading for the yellowish spots but...

she actually turned out quite pretty!  I liked your idea of the braids, Lockette! Now she needs some ribbons for her hair, I think  :lovey:
