Pony Corral / Re: Villain toys
« on: March 09, 2020, 05:05:14 PM »
Probably they just figured they wouldn't sell well.

I all of the 1980s villain toys that I can think of- are to this day, the lowest in value and least desired- then AND now.  Coldhart figure for Carebears, Evil Scowlene for Moondreamers,  Purple Pieman and Sour Grapes for Strawberry Shortcake... pretty much any "girl toy line" I can think of.  EXCEPT Lady Lovelylocks villain-  Duchess Ravenwaves.

Why?  Because those first mentioned baddies were ugly and/or super unappealing.  I mean come on- what kid wants to play with these hideous and deformed looking dolls?

On the other hand, Duchess Ravenwaves- a bad guy doll that was prettier than the protagonist- sold (and still sells) JUST FINE. Everyone wants her.

So the lesson is-  unattractive unappealing bad guys probably won't sell well.  But cool looking or appealing attractive baddies do just fine.

I think if they had made Catrina a nice looking toy- she would have sold like gangbusters.  Or even Tirac.  But probably not that witch or her daughters... (sorry forget their names).

The IT dolls are both beautiful and expensive. But the early ones were not so much, because sellers would buy them, debox them and sell them in bits on ebay for some reason. This may be one of the reasons why IT have stopped outsourcing? I don't know.

My aim was only to get the Misfits (my favourites!) and the characters they never made in the original line (Stingers, Astral, Regine, Craig, Eric), which (aside Graphix, who was a prototype character but a Misfit one) I managed to do. I would love some of the alternate fashions, such as Makin' Mischief for Stormer and the Kimber rebel outfits (but not even having a Kimber doll makes that a bit pointless).

As it is I picked and chose my Misfits to avoid their original outfits...I have a proper Jetta but my loose display one is wearing a custom fashion, so is my Roxy who I got nude because I don't like her real outfit, and my Pizzazz is from the 2 set with Jem because it's just nicer. Stormer is the only one wearing her proper threads, but she has the keytar not her guitar. Even my old 80s Stormer has a custom keytar, I don't like her guitar.

I'd love if they just sold fashion sets, but I don't need more dolls.

I am also curious to see what they produce, though.

I already have 2 more than I intended (Aja and Danse, don't even ask how that happened) and my Jem cabinet can't take any more.

There were a LOT of cheap Misfits and Stingers at some point because IT got greedy and made large (for them) editions which did not sell out at the dealers.  So then they went on sale.  Then clearance. A lot of dealers had to piece them out to recoup their losses.  I was annoyed when I saw a doll I had paid full price for (then $120) sell for $75 and then $50 on the IT shop...

IT told us at convention that they had started to sell all of the Jem dolls through the IT shop only (cutting out the dealers) because they had taken a loss on those dolls that hadn't sold out...

They really should have just stuck to edition sizes of 500-750 (with the exception of Classic Jem of course, and they should have made Astral, Regine, Danse and Rayna slightly larger editions)

Galactica, can you tell me about all these releases I missed? I went to the website and saw they did sooo many new dolls after I stopped checking.
They did side characters that were only in one episode. Where they all exclusives like Techrat? And I also saw some Stingers dolls with alternative outfits but couldn't find releases. Were those fanworks?

On second thought, I would have liked to get Atsral, too. Crud :(
So... I would have liked three more dolls in total. One of them super rare. Not enough money to support that.

OMG there are so many- many of the side characters were IT exclusives- (maybe all) but some weren't popular and so you can still pick them up for original cost.  Like Shana's boyfriend, Anthony.  The doll just ended up looking a little dorkier than the cartoon...

There were only a VERY FEW that were wclub or "upgrade" dolls available only to club members. Graphix, Countess, Techrat, Award Night Jem... -  there were also "IT Direct" that were offered to wclub first, and then the leftovers to the public.

THIS site has the best information about all of the dolls (scroll to the bottom and over on the left side of the screen there is a breakdown that shows each doll) : http://totallyjem.jemmagic.com/jemintegritytoysdolls.html#sdcc2012

As for the fashions-  they were ALL based on box art or appearance in the cartoon.  Most were fan favorites- later fashions we voted on.  THe site above  actually will tell you exactly which Jem episodes a particular doll wave will appear :D

I agree that the display is really small.

In other news, here are some pictures by bizarro_toys on Instagram of the Basic Fun ponies

Thank you for posting and sharing my account!

I am glad you guys got to see my pictures. (Most circulating the internet are the same set.)

As a huge My Little Pony fan I wanted to make sure everyone received the coverage these amazing toys deserve.  :)

A note, these are still prototypes so they can change in production. Also, they care deeply about getting the ponies right so even if one batch is slightly too green or not pink enough the next one should be better. There is a reason we received unscented versions of the Rainbow Ponies. ;)

There are still more exciting plans for pony in the future. We just have to make sure to keep supporting the releases and going to our local stores and requesting them. :D

If anyone has any additional questions not answered here about Basic Fun ponies let me know ;D

I'm happy to see this! I love your feed on insta- I didn't realize you were an Arena member!

Agree going to your local stores and asking them to carry Basic Fun ponies counts for a LOT!

WTF is it with 35 as the most random of anniversaries for Hasbro toys??

As far as I recall from the last time I bought any of the IT dolls, you could buy them from IT without being part of the club. Of course if a bunch of people stockpile and then scalp the price it's a problem, and being in the club would prevent that I guess - but I still expect it will be possible to buy from their website direct.

If I remember right, the earlier IT Jem dolls were sold by a bunch of outlets in places but after maybe the Regine line or the one after they were sold off IT';s website directly to whoever got there first.

I do remember with the Regine release that she was almost entirely sold out on preorder the day of her official release because of WClub people preordering (many to scalp later on ebay and NOT Jem people). I got mine from a seller in France, it was the last one and largely I got her thanks to someone online pointing me that way and people in the US not wanting shipping from Europe. That was messy and created a lot of bad feeling towards the WClub members (because a bunch of the non-Jem ones had been badmouthing Jem for taking over IT's doll line).

They were also really good at replacing hands for a doll I had bought from someone that wasn't a named supplier, no questions asked, because the joint was faulty, so if I had money and the £ wasn't now so weak against the $, I would be fine buying from them again.

Though really I'm more interested in certain fashions than repeating the characters. I'd have liked Synergy and Graphix but the first came out before I had any money for IT dolls (so too expensive) and Graphix after I was back at uni.

Most of the dolls could be bought from "dealers" (ie independent doll shops) and later through IT's shop, but there were a few made to order dolls that were offered only to club members, like Techrat, the Glitter n Gold holograms, Studio Playset, Graphix, This is Farewell... I think a few others but I forget which. And some of the dolls (like Techrat) were offered through IT shop to wclub first and then outside- but sold out instantly before getting to the outside (like Zipper).

I joined wclub specifically so it wouldn't be SO dang hard to get the dolls I wanted - and bought way more than I should have.  A lot of the first wave Misfits and Stingers went on Clearance eventually which was kinda annoying to see as I had paid full price.  Ah well.

And yes, there was a lot of obnoxious belittling and insults directed at Jem fans on wclub that was hurtful, especially the first year.  It died down eventually but to this day "they" (the other collectors) insist that the Jem/CI body is hideous and huge with man hands. Which is ridiculous.

I this time it will be maybe one or two "releases".  Maybe one made to order Jem, and maybe 5 or 6 dolls sold through the IT shop.  Probably wclub members will get first shot at them, before they open to the public.  Maybe they will reserve some for the public (like they did with the RuPaul doll).

The thing is, I already have the dolls I want (except Raya) and I'm not paying $135 for a fashion. Probably.  So I'm not sure I'll be buying anything they offer, but I am very keen to see what it will be...

Off Topic / Re: Anti-Nostalgia

For fear of taking this OT this will genuinely be my last post on the Jem subject, but there was also that ep where she created a third identity to get some space from the Jem Jerrica problems, only to have Rio go after that identity as well...

Back on main topic....

OMG

Okay back on topic for me-  Kings Quest IV - Perils of Rosella.

I seriously LOVED LOVED LOVED playing that game on the computer-  I still remember how my heart fluttered like mad when I saw the Unicorn for the first time- and how immersed I would get in that game- like for hours and days (when you are a grades school kid you gots all kinds of time during summer break).  I'd play it until my eyes would cross. And remember back then, you couldn't just pop on the internet to find a quick answer when you got stuck- so my sister and i (who both played it) would sometimes get stuck on something for weeks...    I think it only made the game that much more meaningful when we would FINALLY progress.

A few years ago they recently did a "Kings Quest Reboot" game- and it was very nice and reminiscent of KQ- but it wasn't a reboot of the Kings Quest that I loved- KQ IV.   It was also centered on King Grahm, not Rosella.  And, no unicorns.   It did give me a hard core craving for that original KQ IV game...

Well, I discovered you can fairly easily find and play the game online.  But my god- the graphics and game play is WAY rougher than I remembered- and it takes FOREEEEVER for Rosella to just walk across the screen.....  I still kinda want to play... but wow who has that kind of time? Lol
I guess I still do get the "feels" for the game, so it's not a complete anti-nostalgia-  but it definitely doesn't have the magic it had in 1989 or whenever.

I don't have the episodes memorized (and only a vague recollection of them anyway)-  but I am sure Pizazz did all kinds of crazy homicidal things.  Didn't she chase Jerrica around with a tractor? (Or maybe Jem) or try to run her off of a cliff ?

I remember Roxy running a digger crazily around the future Starlight mansion.

I'm sorry, I went rather into default mode because I've seen so many people over the years try and use the volcano scene as a rationale to prove the Misfits are evil, when it's nothing to do with them (literally). At the same time they're pretending like it's fine that Jem's there crashing gliders, stealing from museums, and so on because she's the 'heroine'. It's hypocrisy and I just hate it.

You can't justify someone doing bad things just because they're the heroine and the show is named after her :P. As a kid I can see people might miss it, but there are so many things that should make an adult viewing feel uncomfortable vis a vis the overall morality of a heroine who is encouraging her boyfriend to two time her with herself.

On the subject of violence that would be censored now, maybe we should also be talking about Rio's anger management issues and the poor pot plant he assaulted. I also remember Stormer's brother Craig putting a microphone (?) cable around Eric's neck at one point.

I always thought Rio was an idiot and never liked him-  I do remember him kicking and breaking a potted plant - he was mad at Jem or Jerrica or something... ?

Even as a kid (okay tween) I found it problematic that Jerrica never trusted Rio enough to tell him her secret- I mean that went on for YEARS - and ALL the other holograms knew (and a few others right?) I guess she just wasn't that serious about him!   And maybe I can see why- how stupid must he have been to not be able to determine they were teh same person ? I Mean COME ON MAN.  Didn't Jem and Jerrica kiss the same?  Didn't they look a LOT alike???

Plot issues and Rio's anger aside, the show was pretty entertaining and the music was (and is) surprisingly good!!!

I don't know how many of you ever watched JEM but the Misfits (or at least the main one) is a legit homicidal maniac- they actually trap one of the Hologram gals in a volcano in one episode- before it explodes ???    Anyway...  now kids aren't even allowed to have bad guys as far as I can tell...  somewhere in between would be nice for the kids I think...

I missed this before, but I have to go back to it because it's not true. The Misfits have nothing to do with the volcano. It's entirely on Zipper, who is operating on Eric's orders, and only Eric's orders. The Misfits actively save Kimber from being murdered on stage in Morvania, so there's a very clear distinction to Misfits doing violent things for the sake of getting ahead and the Misfits actively intending to kill someone. The Misfits =/= Eric, Techrat, or Zipper.

In fact I think that Christy Marx said something back when about Zipper being replaced by Techrat because his actions were just too much for the audiences/parents. (Mind you same parents allegedly complained because Stormer wore fishnets, go figure).

By the same token of violent and dangerous actions, there's the moment Jerrica crashed Pizzazz's hangglider (attempted murder is justified revenge for graffiti?) and tried to crash her car in the Indy 500 using a mini hologram (attempted murder is justified to win a race?). Those are things that Jerrica did directly, yet people somehow think the Misfits are worse because someone connected to someone connected to them did something awful.

This is a pet bugbear of mine, because a lot of the things Jem/Jerrica does throughout the Jem series are not really morally superior to most of the things the Misfits do throughout the series either. They're human beings struggling against each other in a pretty catfight kind of a way, but because the audience are told Jem is the hero, people just ignore when she does literally dangerous, deceitful or evil things - which happens often.

I've always felt that I can understand where the Misfits stand in the equation, because they're cast as bad guys, thus their bad acts are explained, but occasionally their fight to show either vulnerability or a level of morality beyond their brief makes them relatable and human characters. Whereas Jem is meant to be the hero, yet her actions often cut corners to get ahead, and she doesn't act with what she preaches. I find her a hypocrite, thus I can't stand her. I like all the holograms, I just think Jem (and Jerrica, but mostly Jem) is disgusting.

While talking bad stuff, it should bring me to the Stingers, who were psychological villains on a completely different scale to the Misfits and frankly, IMO, that made them worse because their 'bad' was so much more subtle. That and the fact the second season of Jem opened up a lot more detail about the Misfits and aspects of their lives which made them more relateable (Pizzazz's mother, Jetta's homelife, Roxy's illiteracy, Stormer learning to stand up for herself, etc) whereas then the Stingers came in and trashed all of that with basic fraud and chauvenism (?!).

In any case, on the subject of Jem and the kind of stuff the show included, I think the prime example is the runaway train in the Rock & Roll Express episode. Earlier in the episode Raya stopped the train to let the Misfits on board, using the emergency cord. Yet when the train goes out of control, Rio - who has been left behind at the station...has this whole action sequence where he steals (!) a bike, races after the train, clambers dashingly and bravely onto the observation car, where the entire band of grown women are standing and gasps out heroically...

"Pull the emergency cord."

At which point one of them does.

So apparently even though one of them already did it earlier in the episode, these five grown women need a man to come tell them how to stop the train.

Cringe.

I actually DON'T put Jem in the "anti-nostalgia" category- I was just giving the example as an example of violent cartoons from the 1980s that would never happen today - I apologize for unfairly maligning the misfits

I don't have the episodes memorized (and only a vague recollection of them anyway)-  but I am sure Pizazz did all kinds of crazy homicidal things.  Didn't she chase Jerrica around with a tractor? (Or maybe Jem) or try to run her off of a cliff ? Granted I have only a very vague idea of the episodes 40 years later and have only seen one or two since then so I will certainly admit I am not an expert and that Jem and the Holograms could have been just as reactionary and dangerous as the Misfits- I just don't recall!

It was still a show I liked and surprisingly- I watched an episode or two on Netflix a few years ago and the show is still very watchable   (although I still hated RIo as much as ever)

Anyway good for you for standing up for the Misfits-  I hope you know some more dolls are coming out? (Grossly overpriced yes but also fabulously gorgeous and incredibly detailed)

I'm sure someone "reported" your listings repeatedly until you got kicked.   Maybe some other bitter Skydancer's seller or some dissatisfied customer who wanted you to sell them for cheaps.

Maybe you can sell them on craigs list (do people still do that) or a Facebook group, or find a toy/doll show or flea market in your area.

Folks, this isn't a thread about stuff you hated as a child
Quite the opposite.

Have any of you guys gone back and watched the original THundercats? Or Heman?  The dialogue is almost hysterically bad.  Of course, it was written for 3-5 year olds so I guess they get a pass.

Bwahaha, these are the 80s cartoons I came to love ironically. I recently had a He-Man/Transformers/Bravestarr/She-Ra party with two friends (one of which had never seen G1 Transformers) and we laughed so much we cried. It was great. Especially the swearing! YOU BOOB! FOOL! And the animation budget. And Swifty's smoker voice! Ha, I could go on.

As a kid I really loved Thundercats. Now I'm like "how are there adults who take this seriously?"
I was active in the Transformers fandom, I saw how G1 is treated almost religiously when actually it was rather silly and borderline crazy. We watched that episode where a hotel heiress (she is named Astoria Carlton-Ritz, lmao!!!) falls in love with an ugly plane Transformer and he smacks her around and stuff  A+ content!

Yeah Heman is at least funny and kinda gay which I love- but Thundercats- wow it's kinda moronic. It was a bit of a shock to me as I remember LOOOOOVING that show as a 4 year old. I guess i wasn't very bright, haha

And yeah the cartoons in the 1980s had some MESSED up content.

I think the worst was when I forced my wife to watch "Goonies" which was a childhood favorite.  I never realized until I watched it as an adult, that they basically just run around screaming the ENTIRE MOVIE.  I mean, it has it's cute moments but definitely not the same magic that it once had...

To me Rainbow Dash is the only one that doesn't have a slight "made for creepers" vibe.  (Maybe Twilight Sparkle too.)

Oh I don't know about that.  Why does Twilight have such a large chest? Isn't she supposed to be like middle school age ?

Rarity has a 10/10 creepiness factor.  Fluttershy maybe 9/10 with the chest thing.

I think Pinkie and RD are the best of the lot and least "sexy" which is a vibe I don't want to see in MLP ever.
