What exactly did I watch? The experts aren't an expert at their careers, there was no explanation for the transformation at all and the viles were exactly the same. Angel was behaving badly and should've been told off for her behavior.
Spoiler
This was my reaction.  I guess they wanted to try to give Angel a redemption arc, but it was too little too late.

About the plot twist...

Spoiler
Why did nobody acknowledge that Discord practically raised the dead? People complain about Twilight being too powerful but the chaos guy resurrected a "killed off" villain from the shadow zone like it's no big deal and then got him "killed" again.
Back when we thought he was Grogar it made sense because we were to believe Grogar is a necromancer. But now we know Discord is actually a necromancer on top of being already crazy powerful. He is more godlike than any of the Princesses could ever be :lookround:
Spoiler
Even though Grogar was never a necromancer in the original series.  He was a sorcerer using a powerful object, but none of his powers had anything to do with the dead.

And Discord has officially become the worst interpretation of Q, an imp there to torment the character for his sick pleasure.  They probably thought this was like the ending of "All Good Things" not realizing it was Picard's actions that led to the anomaly of doom (Q was just displacing him through time).  Instead this comes off more like Mxyzptlk.  Only Discord won't get whisked off the cornfield if he says or spells his name backwards.

Also, this twist is just plain stupid.  It's one last middle finger to the older fans as this isn't Grogar but a fake.  After Roid Tirek and the radioactive booger, they struck out on references to the past series.  Do they hate the legacy of this brand at DHX?  And, as I said, Discord has devolved into an imp.  It's also a disservice to Twilight and crew that Discord set up a crisis for them to solve instead of this being an actual crisis.

Why stone?  Just kill the villains for once.  If anything, turning them to stone is worse.  Remember when turning creatures into inanimate material was the tool of the BAD GUYS?!

This was before Frozen was a smash hit success with a queen and an archduchess.

In "The Magic Coins", Magic Star keeps a "good luck collection" which was apparently a bunch of magical charms.  She also seemed to have a sense about a place's magic as she said she could feel the Haunted Garden having bad luck.

But, yeah, magic was almost exclusively the realm of the unicorns or wielders of magical items like the Princesses.

Earth and pegasus ponies seem to be two sides of the same food producing coin.  The earth ponies grow the crops with the pegasi ensuring the weather is conducive for the crops growing.  The two could be seen as the relationship between agriculture and industry.  Agriculture needs industry to supply the materials and equipment to run their farms and industry obviously needs agriculture to supply food.

The unicorns are really the odd ones out, especially since Celestia and Luna took over their moving the sun and moon.  Yet, they dominate the capital and do have magic that just seems to be more reality warping as time goes by.  I guess you could say they represent the service sector which provides non-material support.

The thing about the "Queens are evil" being a Disney thing is there have been a grand total of two evil queens in the Disney canon, none in almost 70 years, one of them is more insane than evil, and both are from their respective source material.  Elsa was going to be evil in Frozen, but they thought better of it to the benefit of the movie.

As for the princesses in FiM.  It's all marketing, and Hasbro and the staff have never cared about making the lore of this show cohesive.

I feel like the truly terrible episodes of the first couple of seasons, like Over a Barrel and Dragon Quest, were attempts to push the envelope by a show establishing itself.  They were bugs being worked out of the system.  As the series progressed, and the series not only continued to overreach but did so more frequently and more sloppily, it seemed less like a bug and more like feature.  This was on top of the characters becoming stagnant which probably contributed to how bad subjects were handled.

Don't get me started on A Perfect Pear.  I could write a doctoral thesis on why that empty shell of an episode slot is the epitome of terrible writing going for cheap emotional manipulation due to a lack of any substance.  When I was going to review the episode, I realized it was going to be a small novel, so I retold the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes" as an analogue for the episode's intended effect.  All I will say is I didn't think you could waste William Shatner, but then I saw this episode.

And Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep was actually a terrible message because it suggests depression is something that can just be hugged away.  Luna needed help, actual professional help, and not the lupine charlatan type.

Which gets me back to this episode.  So they very next episode has Twilight completely cool and collected while everything is fall apart around her ears.  Since when has this been the case?  And they even felt the need to add that what happened in this episode was an outlier, even though it's never been the outlier.  Just...why did they think this episode had to exist?

I got to disagree about applauding the staff for trying to be more intricate.  It's just encouraging the bad behavior that got us here.  They've never succeeded with more complex topics.  In anything, they're caused structural damage to the series.  The dragons have never recovered from "Dragon Quest" and the yaks are a lost cause.  There are so many destructive unintended messages in this show that still puts itself out as the instruction manual on friendship.

I'm someone who cares more about the results than the intentions.  "The road to Hell is paved in good intentions" as they say.  It reminds me of Junkyard Wars where the complicate machines seemed to breakdown and be useless while the simpler machines get the job done in maybe not the flashiest and most effective fashion.

Were the earlier seasons simple, yes.  However, the jokes landed better, the characters were endearing, and the lessons seemed more well covered.

Here's a really quick unpolished design of Twilight I came up with...

(one that doesn't look like a Celestia recolour)

I like the progression of colors in the mane and tail.  Makes me think of a twilight which is spot on.

Then I guess maybe, as terrible as it sounds, we want G5 to go the way of G2 Transformers.  It is a commercial flop and quickly abandoned.  Hasbro realizes bronies are not a group to be catered to for good business, and goes back to how they did things before FiM or go in a completely new direction.  It'll be painful for all of us during the 2020's, but in the long run might save the brand.

Because I think with FiM My Little Pony has lost its identity.  It's too busy pandering to a particular subset of the adult fanbase and trying to be hip to keep track of what it's supposed to be about.  It's even twisted into own purpose, teach lessons about friendship, into being so toxic I wouldn't allow small children to watch this show because of the terrible and counterproductive things this show has to say.

I have to agree with Zapper that the people running this show set themselves up for failure.  They have bent to the will of bronies since the community gain prominence, and never seemed willing to say no to them.  So, when it came time to make a decision on a controversial topic, someone was going to be angry and that community never had to develop the coping mechanisms for not getting their way.

Really, social media probably the worst thing to happen to media as it brings the staff and actors within digital arm's reach of the fans which means they're within reach to be digitally maimed by people who believe they can give in to their worst impulses from behind a computer screen.

Anyway, I'm personally okay with Cheese Pie.  Though, at this point I just don't care what's happens in the show.  I'm just glad it's over.

Here's hoping the staff goes into G5 with the mindset they're the ones making the show and not to instill the sense of entitlement in the fans they did this time.

Luster Dawn? All hail the future Princess of Equestria/future exile. Something related to day/night + glittering in some way = princess student
Don't know why they bother with Celestia's school with that hint.

Thinking about it ... is it impossible for an Earth or Pegasus pony to be an heir? All Twilight's competition/former potential heirs have been unicorns. Twiligjt Sparkle. Sunset Shimmer. Starlight Glimmer. I look forward to Moonrise Glitter or Twinkling Eclipse replacing or being the competitor to Luster.
Spoiler
I remember someone made an art of a Princess Twilight with Wind Whistler as her student.  Sadly DeviantArt lost it.

I guess since the title if "Friendship is Magic" with magic being the central Element of Harmony and magic is a unicorn thing, a unicorn will always be the core.

I'm also disappointed the slowly encroaching mountain didn't come to flatten Ponyville in the end.  I had the perfect way for all this to end.  With the town crushed, a Mole-like pony pops up and declares "BEHOLD: THE UNDERPONY!"  John Ratzenberger guesting starring as said pony is a must of course.

Well, this epilogue feels...odd for this show.  And of course their inability to mention death makes some things ring hollow.  I mean, they can't even have a picture of Granny Smith?

And the families make me think of the epilogue to Digimon Adventure 02.  I guess the couples make sense, but it seems pointless to introduce us to the next generation when we know they're just going to do the same characters in the next incarnation.

And boo for Scootaloo have undeveloped wings for life.  I thought it was a stupid idea then, and I still do.

It seems like this show will die as it lived, just so much potential executed in the safest and blandest manner possible.

It also didn't help that Pinkie started with a stereotypical bubble-headed answer.  Pinkie Pie is not that clueless, and when she is it's a sign the episode is poorly written.
