Customs / Re: Halloween swap 2015 - partners sent!
« on: September 16, 2015, 06:28:08 AM »
Im beginning to get the first seeds of an idea. Poking around online now for further inspiration.

***Bait im not too fond of (g3) : Donkey, Pinkie Pie Walking, Broken Neck, Sunny Daze, "Core" poses are kind of chunky and bland imo.  (G1) : Collectors Pose, Tootsie, earlier molds that seem kinda flat... like Moondancer, Glory, Firefly... etc.

***And the reverse side... poses you love: (g3) : Gem Blossom, January Carnation, Kimono, Periwinkle, Valenshy, Sweet Breeze, Diva, Beachberry, Rarity, Whistle Wishes (G1) : Fizzy, Scoops, Lofty, Heart Throb, Powder, Gusty, Big Brothers, original baby poses and newborns =)

(Lately the custom side of my collection has been drifting toward g3 but if you have a taste for g1 or 4 run with it!)

***Bases are fine as long as theyre not too large, only have one shelf in the display case for customs currently.

***I love sparkles when they fit the character so go to town with glitter as long as its not gonna shed or feel like sandpaper. =)

I'll try to keep this post updated (or i may copypaste the info to page 1, not sure yet. Coffee will decide for me) with all the answers so youll be able to find it later partner.

For sealing personally i prefer spray in dullcote, usually by Testors or Citadel (or similar. You can find it in gamestores that sell dnd minis n paints etc) multiple thin coats and give it time to dry between coats or you risk stickyness or crackling.

I also use brush-on type sealers for areas you want shiney. Triple thick is popular, but i also use Americana gloss and satin. (Good for eyes, or areas you generally want shiney, like sculpted silk, etc etc)

O and if you do glitter (or glitter paint) do that part AFTER you seal with dullcoat, or itll kill the sparkle. I typically paint, dullcoat, glitter, then gloss. You can use the brush-on gloss or triple thick over the glitter for added protection and sparkle.

Cant really help with needle sizes, i order mine thru Maniah and trust her judgement lol

yep. kaos beat me to it. =P im in the 'prime everything' camp. gives a nice even basecoat and will keep the ponys bodycolor from affecting your paints color.

and yeah id get at least 4 hanks for a styling size. tho id prolly get a couple extras just in case. all depends how thick or long you want it to be. so never hurts to get too much (woot for hair hoarding!) make sure you have plenty of spare needles if you use a rerooting tool too, cause they like to eat them.

cant wait to hear how the de-gluing phase goes. its everyones favorite step. :silly: happy boiling and stomping!

Customs / Re: Why did testors dullcote end up sticky!
« on: September 08, 2015, 06:12:34 AM »
I had this problem pretty bad last year, im still trying to figure out exactly what causes it, as some paint colors seem to get it a LOT worse than others, white is the worst of all. Ive changed paint brands, which seems to have helped, time will tell. Ive also switched back and forth between testors and armory, then back to testors again.

It could be your paint, or the humidity of the area, or the thickness of the coats... only two of those you can fiddle with, sadly. Try switching up your paints you use to rule that out... and multiple thin coats is the way to go with sealing (accidently thick coats will also leave terrible crackles which are annoying to fix.)

As to treating sticky ponies... it sounds funny, but put them in the fridge. For reals. For like 5-10 minutes. Til they feel dry. Then reseal them. Seems to help a bit. But not sure if it FIXES it or if its just a bandaid treatment. And results vary from case to case. Youll want to try to wipe off as much dust etc as you can before resealing tho, or the debris will be there forever.

Again, not sure if theyll stay dry that way or if it just puts the brakes on the stickies for a little while. I eventually discounted out the ones that had it bad in a fit of rage. =/

Best of luck. Let me know if any of it helps.

Yup yup dries fast and hard. I use it for pewter minis. Just be careful around hair as it IS  a superglue.

I imagine by folding a loop in the hank and dipping/rinsing it. Kind of like tie-dying... But not.
