Pony Corral / Re: Who was your newbie saviour?
« on: August 04, 2019, 03:27:38 PM »
They're no longer active in the community, but when I first joined the Arena a total stranger sent me a PM asking if I wanted some ponies. I was told they were mostly baity G1s and some accessories. At the time I only had a small handful of ponies, couldn't afford more, and was going through a rough time postpartum after my son was adopted.

The box took a while to arrive and I think it actually showed up at our old house the day we moved because grandma had to forward it to our new address on the other side of the country. But after all the waiting, it was so worth it. I vividly remember my excitement and happiness as I pulled pony after pony after pony out of the box. It was packed completely full, way more than I ever could have guessed. Almost half of my G1s are still from this box and I still have every single pony and accessory. One of my favorite ponies, my baity cancer spotted Moonstone, was in there. My extremely baity Baby Firefly, my little travelling companion for so many trips, was in there. I discovered my love of baity G1s and G1s without tails from this box, which still shape my collecting preferences today.

I don't think I ever spoke to this person again and a lot of bad stuff (like scamming) came out about them later. While those actions are inexcusable, I'll still forever be grateful to them for showing so much kindness to me when I was a newbie. Their selfless gift meant the world to me and still brings me so much happiness 8 years later.

Taxel, you're so lucky to own a Magweno doll! I love those! I didn't know she retired but now that you mention it, I haven't heard from her in quite a while. So many artists leave DA, too, even if they are still active. I don't really use other platforms in addition to Facebook and DA...

I cherish him so much! I followed Magweno on Tumblr and that last Halloween release was a disaster. A lot was going on in her real life that the quality of the dolls suffered and shipping was slow. It looks like she did a release in mid 2017 but as far as I know she only sells locally now, if at all. Her Tumblr and Instagram haven't been updated since October 2017... its so sad. She was one of my favorite artists for years.

vonborowsky is another doll maker I love that still posts. I had a chance to play with one of her dolls once and it was so cool. I really hope I can get one of my own one day.

Pony Corral / Re: G3 "Retro" ponies on Target website

I don't have words for how confused I am.

I won't lie, if the packaging is cool or interesting I'll probably grab at least one. I missed basically all of the BF G1s because of Life Reasons so I won't let the G3s pass me by if they're cool. But I still just... don't understand where its coming from.

The main six don't really appeal to me, especially as G3s, so hopefully if this line continues they bring out some of the more interesting G3s. I would buy Waterfire in a heartbeat.

Welcome to the world of doll collecting! :D

Enchantimals are a little odd to me (something about their heads) but they're definitely still cute. They remind me of my best friend. If they had better articulation I'd definitely have a couple for that reason alone.

Pony Corral / Re: Space issue, money issue, do I want to sell?
« on: July 25, 2019, 11:57:38 PM »
I moved in February and decided to cut down my collections a bit too. I got rid of more dolls than ponies, but I let go of many G3s because I realized I didn't even like them that much. Some of them I tried to sell but for the most part I just donated them.

A month later I left my abusive husband and I had to be very selective about what I took with me because there just wasn't enough space. I took most of my ponies and dolls, but a lot got left behind. It really forced me to decide what was most important to me, what I needed, what I could replace, and what I just didn't want at all anymore. I had a few regrets but I was able to get everything back.

Yeah, I don't think it was Howrse. And this was back when I was in middle school, like maybe around 2003 to 2006. It was a loooooong time ago haha.

Did Horseland used to be a text-based game where you could upload photos for your horses? I played a game like that obsessively when I was a kid. I thought it was called Horseland but I can't remember.

Lickety Split can turn mountains in to ice cream by kicking her heels together 2 times.

I'm just imagining Lickety Split turning the Tetons into ice cream and the valley flooding with a giant sundae. There would be chocolate chips and cookie dough clusters floating down the river. :haha:

I love commissioning other artists! I have literally hundreds of pieces of artwork that I've commissioned over the years. Most of it was with virtual currencies (ie dA points) since I didn't have disposable income for many years, but now that I have some I love to support whatever artists I can. I've got a handful of orders out right now that I'm excited for!

One of my most cherished possessions is a little art doll - an Abdab by Magweno. She doesn't seem to sell her work anymore and I got my boy from her last drop. He means so much to me! I hope I can track down more of her dolls on the secondhand market one day, since I've admired her work for years.

My newfound favorite thing is jewelry and I've found the sweetest couple - The Manerovs - on Etsy who make absolutely amazing jewelry. Its all very nature themed, with flowers and leaves, in a way that's incredibly hard to find. I have three pieces from them so far and I can't wait to get more. I was never much of a jewelry person before but their kindness and craftsmanship has really gone a long way to win me over! Their pieces are genuinely just works of art and seeing them daily brings me so much joy. I'll never spend my money at some big box jewelry store when I can just message Tania and Oleg to get any piece I can imagine custom made just for me.

Fluttershy looks... uncomfortable to me. I really don't like the pose, but I get why they chose it. It'll certainly sell.

I just saw the art of all 6 on the last page for the first time and I love Dash & AJ! I'll definitely pick them both up if they make it to production being that adorable. Its been years since I cared about anything FiM/G4 but I've still got a soft spot for those two.

Pony Corral / Re: How close are you to completing your collection?
« on: July 15, 2019, 12:16:04 PM »
Hmm... I don’t think my collection will ever be complete. I like to think of myself as a sort of hobbyist “toy historian”... I read up on the history of toylines, brands, and manufacturers, I watch old TV commercials, I browse old catalogues... Not just MLP, but dolls, action figures, plushies, and lots of other things. I like to watch the changing trends and patterns in new toys, too. As long as there are awesome things to collect, I will collect them.

This somewhat resonates with me too, though I am more specific (mostly G1 ponies, though I did some stuff with Jem some years back). It's a project, it's about the toys but also their history, who was sold where, when, and so on. I think the historian in me has taken over a little bit, but since pretty much everything mainstream online focuses on only one geographical region of MLP release, and I didn't grow up there, it's always driven me to find out what happened here instead.

The US line is the only mlp line that is logical, well publicised and clear. For those reasons it holds zero investigative appeal to me :) I love the ponies the US had but couldn't care less about US release dates, set names, pony names except to contextualise other more unpredictable pony releases. The hook is in the stuff that doesn't follow the US timeline, and hunting for that information is a kind of collecting that never ends.

Yeah, the U.S. releases are pretty well-documented. I’m more interested in the overall history of the toy market: what competing companies were doing, how and when fads emerged in the industry, how play-styles and advertising have shifted over the decades... I like to study the ebb and flow of the U.S. toy market in its entirety, more-so than any specific line or brand. :) I lean heavily towards the North American releases, simply because those are what I grew up with and have the strongest nostalgia and feelings for. I imagine it’s much the same for you and the UK releases. :)

For me, toy history kind of represents the brightest parts of any given era. It’s the history of something joyful and fun, invented to make people happy and inspire imagination (and of course, to make money for the manufacturers). A lot of history is full of ugliness and strife, but there’s far, far less of that in something like the toy industry. It makes me happy to look back at times gone by and say: “Whatever else was happening in the world back then, there were still children playing with Barbies, MLPs, superhero toys, and plushies.” That’s oddly profound to me...

Also... I still play with my toys, and that’s something I truly cherish. X3 I love that I still get hyper and excited over a new pony. XD So I guess shifting toy trends fascinate me in part because they still impact me, haha.

Have you heard of Mel Birnkrant? He's a toy collector (Mickey Mouse and vintage comic things mostly) and used to be a toy designer. He's got a website that's absolutely packed with all kinds of really cool information about the toy industry. A few years back I binged his whole site and I learned so much. I don't recall anything about MLP (though it may have been mentioned in passing; he didn't work on MLP) but there's tons of info on both "boy" and "girl" toy lines, mostly more obscure ones I don't see mentioned much in the toy communities I'm part of.

What's making you want to re-start, Loa?

I miss it! I miss getting packages in the mail & colour on my shelves!

This is how I've been feeling lately!

I never stopped collecting or got rid of everything, just a bit of a downsize recently, but it got put on the back burner because so much else was going on. I didn't have money for ponies and was prioritizing my dolls when I could afford new stuff. But I miss getting new ponies and now that I've got the freedom to be myself, I'm gonna get back into it. I miss getting new ponies and having cute colorful horses around haha. It just has to wait until I can get some Billys!

At this point I don't know what "complete" looks like for me, but I don't think I'm close! Not with the Basic Fun repros, HQG1Cs, and all the fun retro merch that's been coming out.

I've always wanted the MLP Hallmark ornaments but I've never had the chance to get my hands on one, even when we had a Hallmark store. Seashell is definitely coming home with me! I'll probably order her online and try to grab the older ones off Amazon or something too.

I just hope they release Sundances! A repro Sundance and Megan set would be adorable.

This set is totally bizarre to me. The heads and eyes just don't seem to match the bodies. Something about the Earth ponies in particular is really throwing me off, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Maybe the mouth?

Its a shame because if the heads looked better, I'd be all over this set. But I just can't get past them. I'd rather spend my pony budget on Basic Fun or HQG1C ponies if I'm buying new.
