Customs / Technical question about sculpting
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:59:46 PM »
So I've got me some air-drying clay, which I want to sculpt onto the pony base. I've never sculpted heavily before, so I have some concerns.

I'll be sculpting around the feet, so if I do it the way I think I will, the feet will be completely enclosed in clay, to maybe halfway up the leg. But how fragile would the clay be once dry, and would it stay secure around the pony feet?

Mainly what I'm trying to do is make my pony bait taller by increasing leg length. The clay I've got hold of is Amaco Artists' Modeling Clay.

Anyone have ideas/advice?

Either, really. I don't have an extremely specific idea in mind yet, I'm sorta just sticking a toe in the water (so to speak) =P

I was thinking maybe I need a new sig...

I've never commissioned pony art, so I am out of the loop =P What's the usual going rate for commissioned art, and who is available?

^-^ happy Monday

I love the hair blend on this pony, Lucky, and the symbol is so nice and clean! You should definitely be proud of this one!

Here's my most recent one. I thought she'd be awesome as a G4, but I only had G1 and G3 baits. Anyway, here's Threnody:

Threnody is an experimental pony - the first time I used India Ink, and the first time I tried extra hair plugs! It worked out okay, I think. Anyway, here's the details =)

Threnody is a punk violinist pony (and in the version of Ponyville in my head, owns the flower & herb store. I don't know why).

Her symbol is a violin, roses, and sheet music on the right side, and a violin, bow, and roses on the left. She has more roses on her right front hoof. Her earrings are black shark teeth, her necklace a larger brown tooth. Her bracelets are made from leather, cut tacks, brads, and a couple of red rhinestones. She has two eyebrow rings, one a copper braid, and the other silver braid with 3 purple seed beads. I handpainted her eyes in two shades of blue. The roses have an extra layer of glitter that doesn't show up too well in the pictures. Threnody's hair was re-rooted in a blend of Golden Sun, Goldilocks, Lemonade, Marmalade, Moonlight, Sunlight, and White Witch. I gave her shorter locks in front of her ears for a bit of extra punk cuteness.

The definition on the roses is hard to see on the camera, but whatcha guys think?

Customs / Re: Quick question about varnish
« on: March 25, 2012, 06:27:58 AM »
Hmm... I've had troubles with some sealers based on the humidity of the region. Its also possible that the varnish could be interacting in an odd way with some of the paint or other material on the pony.

I had humidity problems with Mod Podge, which is why I switched to varnish, but I've learned some inks do bad things with varnish (including Sharpie). Maybe in the future before trying any new paint or varnish, do a test strip to see how they interact?

I'd totally be interested! Whee!

Although, my customizing is a little slower these days because now I have a full work schedule. But I love the idea for this swap!

I know very little about the Hunger Games (haven't seen the movie yet, though I will), but I <3 the hair blend and the symbol!

Customs / Re: What kind of paint to use for customs?

There are various brands of acrylic paints, depending on your price range. I usually just choose from whatever's available in the nearest Michael's or local art store. Mostly I end up using FolkArt brand paint.
