My first pony was a G3 Strawberry Swirl when I was 5 years old and I did absolutely everything with her and took her everywhere (I did have other influence via the G2 PC game but at the time I didn't know about the toy line). However, I really only caught the 'pony bug' and started seriously collecting when I got my first G1s, Paradise and Steamer, when I was around 7 or 8. I was a very mature and...studious?...child, so I immediately took them home and got on the computer to research them. I found Dream Valley and I was completely hooked. I spent hours browsing people's custom galleries, finding and watching the old cartoons, playing the little pixel games on Ponyland Press, and printing out my PonyIsland ponies to keep as little paper dolls.
I was from the G3 generation though, so while I adored the G1s and G2s and searched for them at every thrift store, antique store and yard sale, reveling in the thrill of finding one among the Hot Wheels cars and Barbies, I also watched the G3 movies and filled my birthday and Christmas wishlists with My Little Pony sets. I even had a MLP-themed birthday party once. I cut out the point tabs on all my pony's boxes, along with my sister, and I can remember the joy I felt when I had saved up enough to send in for Love Wishes. I even got to go to the Disney Build-A-Pony when it was open, and carry my little box back to the hotel room and dress Strawberry Swirl up in the princess outfits and tiaras.
If you had them as a kid, I'm curious to hear about "the itch" you had to reconnect with your ponies ... or maybe you never gave it up!
I only stopped collecting seriously when G4 came out. I'd pick up a few ponies here and there, but I lost much of the desire to collect, customize, and draw them. To be perfectly honest with you, I was among the small population who were not so thrilled about the style change. It was likely just because I had grown up with the more horse/pony-like MLP, while G4s look so stylized and different; I will readily admit that I don't like change so I didn't deal with it well in the beginning.
But I recently (within the last two years or so) gave FiM a chance, and while I actively avoid some of the more questionable parts of the fanbase, most of the fans are awesome people and the show itself is really good and has a lot of great morals in it that really impressed me. I think a lot of cartoons are lacking that nowadays, so to see a show that relates to the youth population of today while still instilling good morals and having such a creative fanbase of children and adults alike is really amazing to me. And it was neat seeing how they integrated ponies from the older gens into the show, which made me, as a pre-FiM collector, smile.
It also re-ignited the desire to collect and create things involving ponies again. Now, I've completely warmed up to G4 (my little herd of them is growing by the day) and am looking forward to G5! This was a hobby I really missed, and I'm happy to be back at it again and glad that I put aside stubborn pride and gave it a chance!

You have a great collection so far. That Medley eraser is unusual. What a good find
Thank you! Right? I'm not sure if I'll ever find one again, so I'm glad to have found this one! Oh lord....how did you find a Rosey Posey in a thrift store!!
Nice collection!
Thanks! Haha I was super shocked myself, I actually had no idea who she was until I got her home and looked her up. I found her at a Savers (that was when we lived in New England; I wonder if the location had anything to do with her being there). Don't hate me but um I actually ended up finding a second one at the same thrift store (albeit her hair in worse condition) and giving her to my sister, since she also collects: visitors can't see pics , please register or loginMy guess is that people attended the ball purely for the charity reasons and then donated the ponies afterwards. Lucky for us!

They only re-released Clever Clover once? Not counting Prince Fauna. I believe one of the Slide twins is a boy too (the pink one I think)
Baby Sunshine, yep! Too cute <3 Gahh all the G2 boys are adorable!

Hmm well so far I haven't had many super amazing finds, but here they are!
1. Rosey Posey for...I think it was around $2 at a thrift store in mint condition, still has her mane and tail in their plastic/band. I didn't even know how rare she was until I got her home and did research, but I picked her up because her cutie mark was so interesting and different. I later found a second one at the same thrift store and gave her to my sister, who also collects.
2. Near mint-condition TAF Dancing Butterflies and Baby TAF Dancing Butterflies, both found at a thrift store for a total of around $4-$5 (if that) when I was little. I love this pair so much, but I didn't realize the TAF babies were hard to find until much later. I was always very careful with my toys though so they survived my childhood with no extra marks on them and remain near-mint today.
3. Baby Woolly at a thrift store for like... $0.50. He has a couple hair plugs missing but is in otherwise great condition.
4. Just recently I found a Medley eraser at an antique store in a $5 pony bag. I'm not sure whether they're actually rare, but it was such an interesting find and I adore it. I've never found one before either.
5. My first G1 ponies, which I found at a yard sale when I was about 7 or 8. I didn't know much about G1s at the time, having grown up with G3s, and only did research a bit later to find out who they were. I got Paradise, Steamer, Princess Dawn, CF Cotton Candy, Baby Stockings (she's in great condition and a crisp white), and a few others for a couple bucks, all in fair too good condition. They haven't sustained much extra wear over the years, aside from Paradise who might need to be deflocked.

I can't remember if I mentioned this before, so forgive me if this is a "repeat post". But I liked that the G2 male ponies were in the same molds as the females. Makes much more sense than G1 or G4's approach. (Although I know G1 also had some males in the same molds as females.) The toys (any gen) are pretty androgynous to begin with because . . . well, they're horses! We could have had canon boys for flutter ponies, wingers, etc if Hasbro hadn't been caught up on the idea that they all "had to be" girls.
I very much agree! At least with the G1s they were still somewhat similar (both males and females had eyelashes, the builds aside from the feathers on the hooves were mostly the same, etc) but G4 is probably the strangest when it comes to this because of the face shape. G2 is so refreshing in comparison; and the males are just as brightly colored as the females! I mean...there is no such distinction in real life with horses; pretty much the only way to tell is to look under the flank. I'd love to see G2's gender concepts incorporated into any future gens.

I care about them a lot! I was just a baby when G2 came out, so I didn't have any originals of my own, but I did grow up with the PC game (which I still love to play) and I got some G2s secondhand when I was around 7-8 (we had a castle playset, it was a lot of fun!) My favorite G2 pony was always Ivy, and my sis and I often played with them together. Unfortunately my G2s were lost in moving at some point. Sad times. I think the reason they're often overlooked is because they had such a short run in comparison to the other generations. But I adore them! The style was super cute, I only wish there had been more of them. (Under spoiler for G5 stuff) Spoiler The leaks for some of the G5 designs almost looks like they're taking some inspiration from G2, actually. That was my first thought when I saw them. IMO that would be awesome to see, I'd really love that!

Ahhh I saw a post about this boy over on MLPTP, congrats on getting him! That tail placing is somewhat...bizarre, but I suppose it could just be a flaw or something. Nevertheless he is lovely, so glad to see more hair on a male pony! I definitely want to get him for myself as well eventually <3

Hehe thanks! Yeah there were quite a lot of those McDonalds ponies lol >u< Good thing I'm still trying to get back all the ponies from my previous collection, or I'd have a ton of doubles, I'm sure! Wow you have some real treasures there! Congrats!
Thank you! ^u^ Nice! Always great to add to our herds!
Definitely! Thanks! Those glittery G4s are to die for. We actually got them in my country (often we miss out on cool things) so I went a bought a few for my collection. So awesome

Since I grew up with G3s (I was a 1997 baby; sadly missed the G2s by a hair since I was too young to have gotten them as gifts) they definitely hold a special place in my heart. G1s will always be my fave generation but G3s are a close second! My first pony was Strawberry Swirl, whom I received as a gift when I was five or six, and I kept her in pretty good condition even though I played with her and I took her everywhere. She even went with me when we visited Build-A-Pony at Disney World! I still have her, actually. My sis and I would watch the G3 movies (I know, yikes) in the living room and play with our ponies together, and put them in our bike baskets to take them with us to our local Friendly's. Ah, so many great memories with G3s. I have a good amount of G3s already, some from my childhood. The rarest pony I currently have is actually a G3, a mint condition Rosey Posey with her mane and tail still in their original packaging. I was lucky enough to find her at a thrift store (I actually found two Rosey Poseys at the same store, although sadly the second one has quite the frizz problem; the other one went to my sister, who is also a collector and didn't mind the frizz). As for collection goals, I would very much like to get back all the G3s I had during childhood before I lost the majority of my pony collection in moving/emergency sales. EDIT: Got a pic of both of the Rosey Poseys! One on right is mine. visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Hi there and welcome back to the pony community! I was almost in the exact same situation, collected G3s/the older gens and then when G4 came out I stopped collecting for like...seven years. Oops. I just came back as well!
Your art is really lovely! I look forward to seeing it around.
