Off Topic / Re: New Thundercats?!
« on: May 18, 2018, 12:53:08 PM »
This is just a horrendous parody of the original. Pass.
Made me think of some other reboot though, but I don't want to take over this post on the Thundercats reboot, so I'll make a new one  ;)

didn't someone do an experiment like that? they stuck a pony in pure acetone to see what happened and it just melted?

That's definitely a possibility. I might have to dilute the acetone, and can always add more acetone afterwards if necessary.

What if they do a set that includes 1 each of different sets, like the party pack.

This! Sold.

darn, everytime I read a post title that could be interpreted as G1 related news, I get hyped and *only* think of G1. Then comes the inevitable "...oh right, G4" when I open the post

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll definitely be taking the necessary safety precautions. And I'm okay with the paint rubbing off, she's a total bait anyways and needs a full repaint. In some DIY vids on doll heads they did mention that the vinyl first expands before it shrinks. So in order to keep it from shrinking, the object has to be filled up with a hard enough material until the acetone has completely evaporated from the vinyl.

I'll definitely post pics if I do end up trying it. It's just one of those hit or miss experiments I just need to try at least once to have peace of mind

The eighties pony puzzles were amongst my favorite merchandise. I loved seeing ponies from completely different sets and years hang out together.

I totally agree. Just look at what Hasbro did to the Disney Princess doll line. OMG, what was Disney thinking. Bizarly enough, the Descendants dolls are much better in design and quality, and yet they can't seem to apply that same level to their own EG dolls. As a side note, I wonder how well the EG reboot dolls are doing.

Pony Corral / Re: Before you knew their correct names-!

Well, it's not quite the same thing as I did know the correct name, but I found it a little uninspiring that the babies had the same name as their mother. So baby Gusty became baby Windy. It had to be different, but still match Gusty. It was only later on that I learned there actually was an adult Windy :)

I never heard of that. Oo

A Hasbro employee who worked on MLP in the eighties made the claim during a Pony Fair (quite a few years ago).

They did say they were looking at ID websites and stuff with all of this, but the fact is that most websites only care about the US mainstream and shove all the non-US ponies away in a separate category of weird at the end. That means they're probably not looking at those ponies. They're probably only looking at what they think are the "main ponies" everyone had, because they're most well known and likely to be successful.

Them looking into interests is good news, but at the same time I'm a little surprised they (claim they) did. The first couple of G1 sets may be iconic with them starting a popular toyline and all, but if they indeed researched the g1 line extensively, they'd find much more popular characters, poses, cute gimmicks and color combinations than the ones that have been rereleased already just a few years ago. Granted, in lesser quality, but still.

I would have focused on the '86 movie & tv series characters, especially now that the complete series is available on DVD. Maybe even invest in a touch up of the old movie and include it in the box of some ponies. But I do understand that the risk was probably too high for them to go for a grand scale relaunch.

Customs / acetone effect on pony *Updated July 8th: G3 pony*
« on: May 12, 2018, 06:20:09 AM »
Has anyone ever tried to grow a pony to twice its size by dunking it in pure acetone? It's supposed to work because of the soft plastic, but a quick google search shows me that all people seem to use acetone for is *shrink* soft plastic (usually doll heads).

I got a bait Peachy, prepped to be dunked in acetone, but I'm not sure I want to go through the hastle if the effect isn't really all that noticeable (or is the opposite). I haven't bought the acetone just yet.

I'm ready to buy one.  Still holding out hope a release will include Wind Whistler.  Please, just give me this.

Same. I'd love to see the full UK Movie Stars set!

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Toys as investment?
« on: May 05, 2018, 06:23:26 AM »
I've met someone who made a hobby (and a lucrative business apparently) out of buying large Lego sets new in store, tuck them safely away in the attic, for the sole purpose of selling them a few years later for of course a much higher price. It's not a collection, not meant for play, but only to be sold later on.

I'm definitely not considering doing this, but I am curious how risky it is as an investment method. Does anyone here do that (with any other toyline you are not personally interested in) or know someone who does?

The crazy prices on ebay for the 35th anniversary ponies made me think of this guy's Lego investment hobby. The people snatching up the Bridge Direct ponies only to make money off of them on ebay clearly are trying to make a buck while the toys are still "hot" and don't seem to have much faith in their future value.
