Pony Corral / Re: Pony display - help?!
« on: November 12, 2012, 05:36:12 PM »
Wow! So many awesome ideas... I cannot wait to try to make something a little better...

I definitely agree about the bookshelves, but, gotta use what I got for now I guess, and luckily, at least the top shelf, because they're shallow, gets decent light. In the bookcases I'm going to build for my G1s, they will be all lit individually, so that won't be an issue.

One of my other problems is space - do you guys have any special tips or tricks for displaying ponies in a small space? The risers look like such an easy and awesome idea, I will definitely have to pursue that, and they look so nice!

Thank you for the ideas and input, after I get these girls hair set and ready to display I think I'm going to have some fun with arranging them, and taking some pics too!

Pony Corral / Pony display - help?!
« on: November 12, 2012, 02:58:41 PM »
I need some help figuring out how exactly to display some ponies...

To make a long story short, I have a "storage collection", due to sheer size - so all of my most important (all my G1s, basically) go into storage until I have the time and space to create custom shelving for them, so I can display them without jeopardizing their quality.

But, I have a bunch of G2s, G3s and G4s that I'm not so worried about, and I'd like to display them... but I don't exactly know what to do.

I have one bookshelf. Wooden - golden mahogany is the color. The top of the bookcase is already taken by my G1 MLP kid-size oven... so there's no room on top. The inside is shallow - shelves are about 22" long, and 8" deep. There are three shelves and then an area below the bottom shelf. I want to display my G3s on this, and so I cut a 2x4 to shelf size to make a platform in the back. I figure I can probably get 2 rows of adult G3s on each shelf. On the lowest shelf, I have some 2x3s to make three rows, and down here I have some G3.5s and McDonalds ponies.

But how do I display my G3s...? Do I just shove them all side by side and maximize space? Should I color coordinate them? Should I arrange them by type, series, etc...?

I'm so lost, and I'm pretty new to collecting G3's, it's just that my G1's that I need are few and far between and very expensive, so now I'm moving onto loose G3s... I know hardly anything about them except the early ones.

So any ideas, photos you have of yours, anything like that - just to give me some ideas on how to make my display look nicer, I'd really appreciate it! I may add photos when I get done stocking the shelves the first time.

Thank you for any ideas you can share!

I love Brony. I love the word - but I've got a ridiculous collection of ALL generations, mainly G1s, and I don't diss on any gens (except maybe the G3.5s... some of them scare me) - Regardless, I wear the Brony arm band from HT, I have the RD Brony shirt - and I've been walking around campus and gotten many "Hey nice shirt!" with that one. All of my friends would probably say 'Brony' and I think to the 'outside world' it's easier for people to just say Brony because it's all over the internet and stores and television shows... it's like having a name for people who collect stamps or coins (for those people), so maybe HT and Hasbro as just trying to cash in on both facets? Pony collectors and people who really want to define 'Brony' as something specific? As long as they make money, right? ...they probably don't even know of all the deeper meanings/associations that people have for 'Brony', lol

I've got to get back to HT - I'm actually more not a fan of the shirts that say stuff on them at all, I wish they had more things with just ponies on them and no words, though I do like the RD inspired 20% cooler stuff. ^_^

OOOoh my god lonewolf - That picture is SO ADORABLE!! <3 <3 <3

And Madhatter - I know what you mean, your dogs sound like mine in that aspect, dogs are so sneaky and quick! I don't think my cats could chew up a pony as fast as the dogs, which is why I also don't have any picture of my dogs interacting with ponies... lol come to think of it, if I showed my black lab, Spencer, a pony plushie, he'd go sit in the corner and put his head down and look sad (he's scared of stuffed toys... don't ask me why! He's also scared of anything that squeaks, and yellow tennis balls...)

Awww I love seeing these pictures and hearing stories about the pets and ponies! Thanks for sharing!

I have one dog who is super sensitive about toys, he has no interest in ponies... however, my blue heeler - she's taken a few ponies off of tables (one mummy charm, baby sunribbon, one other g3...) and chewed them up. She doesn't seem to have too much interest after mommy told her NO PONIES!...so lets hope that stays true! Now I just have to make sure I keep them off of tables low enough for her to grab them from (even though she knows shes not allowed to take stuff off the table...)

Awww NoPony - Your kitty is so cute!! I love the second picture, hahah like 'no way I wasn't even looking at those!'

The big one on the top photo (Morrison) is also very good about leaving ponies alone, but he just LOVES being in the pony room. I think it's the little stage area I have, it's his 'I'm the King' spot... lol, he looks so silly nuzzled up on pink satin!

Oh, well I have changed the topic title - I actually was completely unaware that Brony wasn't... something people wanted to be called. News to me! I apologize - so then, can I rephrase and ask - "Are your pets Pony lovers/fans?"

And hopefully no one will be upset at me!

I really loved reading through this thread! Such an interesting topic...

Personally, for me - it's gotten to the point in my collection where it's pretty obvious how serious of a collector I am, and it's no more 'embarassing' than collecting stamps or coins (less so, in my opinion, because ponies are CUTE!)... but I can kind of understand where you're coming from. I, as a 28 year old, living in my own house, with no children (but a ton of pets, and I run my property as a farm, even though we're very small) have just embraced the pony collecting aspect of my life - and even my friends have, and it's paid off to be proud! People go out and see pony things and think of me, and sometimes if they're cheap enough (like at Goodwill or whatever), they'll buy them for me! Or they'll post to me funny pictures with ponies or pony-related stuff online - so it's really been a way to, almost GROW my love of ponies - by just embracing the 'embarassing' aspect of it.

Yes, I go to Walmart - yes I walk out with carts of ponies sometimes (for myself!) and sometimes people ask  me, and I look them dead in the eye and say, "No, they're all for me."

The most grown up thing about collecting sometimes is that you're keeping part of your childhood but moving on as a person... it's like the best of both worlds. Now I don't sit down and 'play' with my ponies, they don't have adventures like they used to when I was a kid - but I do spend a lot of time around my ponies, cleaning them, styling them, restoring them - and now, finally, maybe displaying them...

Anyway I don't think you should ever be embarassed - you have a HUGE online community who also collects ponies, a hit show, merchadise everywhere - if nothing else, it's pretty 'manestream' (Oh yes, I went there) to collect the G4 ponies right now - and rather 'cool' if you will. So don't feel embarassed! Embrace it! We all have weird quirks - so, maybe collecting ponies is one of yours (like it is mine!) :D I hope you decide to keep your collection displayed. As a person who has a huge collection and NO ROOM at all to display them, I envy those who can show their ponies off - so BE PROUD! And know that there are people out there who'd love to have 5 shelves just for ponies in their room!

I love seeing people's photos of their ponies, but... it's got me wondering - are your pets Pony Fans? Some of my cats are most CERTAINLY fans of being around my ponies - especially my boy kitties...

So I though it'd be funny to start a thread where we can post pictures of our pets with our ponies!

Here's my boys, Mookie and Morrison - chilling in the pony room, on the area I use for photo-staging...

And here's Simon, snuggling in amongst a pile of G3s I was working on...

Anyway, just thought it'd be fun to see everyone's pets who love MLPs like their owners (moms/dads!) :)

I have a couple of other ponies who have unfaded hair, I just haven't photographed them alone...

But here's two Curly Locks - I actually posted about this to see if this was a variant or fading - but I think with all the info this might just be unfaded pink hair on the right:

Halicabi - I love your room so much! Looks great! How do you keep everything from getting dusty though? Like, everything looks so nice and clean and wonderful, I feel like if I tried to set up my ponies they'd get a layer of dust on them so fast!
