Pony Corral / Re: To behead or not to behead

I once had an idea to remove Wind Whistler's head to hide an investment diamond inside her (once I buy one) in case of a robbery, kind of making her the secret keeper of my treasures, but now I'm glad I never actually went through with it.

But if the robber also happens to be a pony collector, they may take your Wind Whistler and then you are screwed! Very unlikely though.

Pony Corral / Ponies Galore! "Thrifting" in Tokyo (with lots of pictures)
« on: December 14, 2020, 12:02:19 AM »
In the past couple of months I have found an abundance of ponies in the wild in Tokyo! I'd like to share the locations in case you ever find yourself in Tokyo and want to purchase a pony (or window shop).

The reason I put "thrifting" in quotes is because these shops are less like thrift stores and more like vintage toy stores. I associate the word "thrifting" with finding a good deal, but unfortunately these ponies are not cheap! They are on the upper end of what you would find them for on Ebay. For example, a fairly common pony like Posey will put you back about $15-$35 USD. A mermaid pony about $80 USD. However, these stores have a large variety of amazing vintage toys---much much more than just ponies! Polly Pocket, Barbie, Sky Dancers, Nosey Bears...you name it! I mostly found G1 and G3 ponies, but there were some G2 and G4 as well! They display their merchandise so beautifully, so it is fun to just to look around the stores even if you do not buy anything.

The first place I visited was Knot a Toy: 2 Chome-24-13 Koenjikita, Suginami City, Tokyo 166-0002

This was my favorite store of them all! The shop keepers were so friendly and there were so many wonderful toys displayed nicely. The prices were a tad bit lower than other stores as well. I found tons of G1s, a few G2s, many G3s, some G3.5s, and G4s. I purchased a beautiful Bubbles and an exclusive Chuck-E-Cheese baby (her mane was cut, so I got her for a cheap price) here.

The second is 2000 Toys: 〒166-0003 Tokyo, Suginami City, Koenjiminami, 2 Chome-43-9 Sugita Building 1F

This store was the largest, and had many narrow rows of display cases full of amazing vintage toys. I think it had the biggest selection of G1s overall. Here I purchased a lovely Wigwam.

Next is Nakano Broadway: 5 Chome-52 Nakano, Nakano City, Tokyo 164-0001

This is a mall full of vintage toy stores! Most carry vintage Japanese toys, but you can find international ones (such as MLP) as well hidden among them. It’s like a scavenger hunt. I found a beautiful 1982 Butterscotch in the back of a top shelf at one small shop for about $15 USD.

Finally, there's Spiral Toy: 〒150-0001 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Jingumae, 3 Chome-27-17, Nagata Building A-1

This lovely little shop in Harajuku had many classic vintage toys! I found many G1s and G3s here. There were some very sought-after ponies as well, such as Fancy Mermaid, Glow n' Show, Rollerskates, and Colorswirl ponies. Here I bought the mail-in order white Valentines twin.

Pony Corral / Have you ever missed out on a great deal?

Have you ever missed out on a great deal that has stuck with you? Recently while scrolling through Japanese Mercari, I saw that I missed out on a beautiful Rainbow Bubbles for $12 USD. Currently she is going for $120 USD on ebay. I have also missed out on a lovely Dazzleglow and Starglow for $20 USD each. I want to hear if you have had the same experience!

Price check on Lil Tot. The pictures suggest she is in great condition. She is $30 USD. Is this a fair price?

Hey everyone!

Thank you for your detailed replies and links! It's all very helpful.

I think for now I will just style her mane and tail and check for rust. I think will try sun fading on a similar pony that isn't quite as special to me as she is first before I try it on her. I worry quite a bit about her symbols being faded if I don't cover them up well.

Hydrogen peroxide has also been extremely difficult to find in Japan this year I think because of the corona virus (not exactly sure why). Once I have more experience I think I will make the call whether or not to sun fade her.

You are right, she is in pretty good shape for her age, so I will do my best to make her look a little more presentable with the advice I have been given and give her a photoshoot regardless if there is a big difference or not! I can reply to this thread with her after photos too!

Thanks again  :)

Pony Corral / Help a newbie restore Merry Treat?

Hey everyone!

I recently purchased a Merry Treat off Mercari so I can take holiday-themed photos of her. She isn't exactly in as great shape as the photos made her out to be. The area around her cutie mark is yellowed (difficult to see in the picture but obvious in real life). She has what looks like yellow and pink highlighter on her leg. Her mane and tail are in relatively good shape but can use some care. How can I fade some of the yellowing without harming the cutie mark? Is sun fading the best way to remove the highlighter? What is the best way to treat her hair? I am researching methods on the internet right now, but there seems to be so many opinions and I am so afraid of ruining her! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wanted! / My Wish List <3
« on: November 23, 2020, 11:24:35 PM »
Here are some items I am interested in buying (a working list that will be updated):

1) Big Brother Wigwam's headdress and bandana

2) Bonnie Bonnets (in good-excellent condition)

3) Any MLP G1 books

... (to be continued)

I'd prefer if it was possible to have these items sent to my address in Japan, but if that is impossible I can have them sent to a relative in the US.

Thank you  ^.^

Introductions / Greetings from Japan! <3
« on: November 18, 2020, 10:46:39 PM »
Hello everyone!

My name is Dannah, I am 26 years old and I am originally from Kansas, USA. I have been living in Japan for the past five years, first working as an English teacher, and now as a translator and quality assurance specialist.

As a child, I had a reputation among my friends as being a tomboy. I played with toy cars and dinosaurs, and would act like girly things like dolls and ponies were lame. But deep down I had a huge admiration for My Little Pony. It started with a book I found from 1985, called My Little Pony and the Mystery Chase, featuring Posey as the main character. I loved the bright colors of the ponies in the book and their cute names. Sometimes when I went to the store I would try to sneak off and admire the ponies, but would never ask for one. Around 2003 is when I received my first pony from a family member for Christmas. It was Sunny Daze. My mom mentioned that I was too old for such a toy, but secretly I was so thrilled to finally have my very own MLP! Fast forward to the present day, and I now have let go of all labels such as "tomboy," and am finally allowing myself to just love what I love!

I just began collecting MLP this month, and I am mostly interested in collecting G1 and G3 ponies (although I love G2 and G4 too!). The very first pony I purchased was Parasol. Because of my memory of the book I mentioned before, Posey is my favorite pony.

It isn't easy finding ponies in the wild in Japan, as they weren't really sold in excessive numbers here like they were in the West, and their prices are quite high. If anyone has any advice for looking for ponies in Japan, I would really appreciate it! I am also interested in learning how to properly clean them and style their manes.

I'm so excited to get to join MLP Arena. Thanks for reading!

Dannah
