Pony Corral / Re: What is this balloon Applejack thing!? XD
« on: January 17, 2022, 09:13:28 PM »
Ha! Everyone's different! Myself, I found the balloon ponies cute enough to make a post looking for the whole set, since they never (heh) popped up in my area. The gimmick of g4.5 was that a pony who specialized in making magic potions that transformed the ponies came to ponyville? I don't know a ton about it, didn't watch it, but I found the tiny waves of bling bag toys based on that idea to be some of the most creative pony toy designs in a while. The balloons and the geometric crystal blind bags were CUTE! I know some other folks were looking for these guys and that distribution of this set wasn't great, so if you don't love this AJ you shouldn't have a hard time finding someone who will. Specifically its a potion pony, batch 2.

Pony Corral / Re: What's happening to my Masquerade pony?
« on: January 12, 2022, 02:49:28 PM »
It's definitely plasticizer! I had a friend suggest that washing with Cascade dish soap will help with a toy that's experiencing plasticizer leakage. I haven't tried it, and my friend isn't a pony collector, though I believe she said she got that advice from another friend who does collect vinyl toys. Does anyone else on here have any experience with that product or a different one that helps to clean up plasticizer issues?

I know that in some good cases, all the plasticizer finishes leaching out and you are just left with a pony that feels hard instead of squishy. It's a long process and I imagine that even washing them with a soap that removes the stickiness may only keep them not sticky for a little while until the plasticizer is all gone, so you might have to repeat the process till then.

You can scroll down to the section on plasticizer leakage on the mlp preservation project, it's very helpful! Apparently there's a product called Formula 911 that's specifically designed to treat plasticizer issues, but you have to be careful using it on painted areas as it will remove them.  It says hydrogen peroxide might help too, and I believe that's less damaging to pony paint? http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/body

Because science is FUN (and informative!) and we're all on here revearse engineering chemical reactions so we can get back in touch with our childhood love of rainbows and unicorns, here is an article about what is happening on a chemical level when plasticizer leaches: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41529-019-0080-7 The good news is that since we only care about our ponies looking cute, we don't have to worry about their degraded tensile strength when they leach! Phew!

Hi! It might be better to ask about that in the arena, since people tend to talk about restoring ponies more over there.

Pony Corral / Re: G1 Twinkle Eye Ponies Coating Loss
« on: January 08, 2022, 10:52:18 PM »
You are most welcome for the reply!

I admit I don’t have all the answers. I told BF about the issue and he said that mixing the Pearl Ex into clear enamel paint instead of clear acrylic paint might help change the look to closer to G1. An interesting thing to think would affect the process! He cited Adam Savage’a videos, and said that Testers makes a good clear enamel that is sold at hobby shops.. Apparently it’s closer in texture to nail polish, but you know, unlike nail polish it’s meant to be permanent.

I would absolutely love to see some re-twinkling tests on cheap gems! And the electroplating honestly looks promising, too, but much harder to do at home. At least, as far as I know!  Those nail transfers look interesting too!

With all due respect, I don’t think adding extra resin to a pony is a good idea. There could be issues where the chemical composition of the pony plastic inhibits the curing of the resin, causing it to never harden properly and leaving you with  a goopy mess, or at best you’ve added a rock hard layer of extra plastic to the pony, and it would alter the shape of the eye. It could drip before it cures as well, and in any case Twinkle Eyes seem to be going up in price lately - you wouldn’t want to alter one in a way that can’t be reversed.

I believe the Twinkle Eye coating is painted on. My best suggestion for a comparable modern material would be to mix interference Pearl Ex powdered pigments into a clear medium (paint) and paint, or better! Airbrush it onto the twinkle eye after masking off the area around the plastic gem with painter’s tape. The interference pigments have colors that show up best on colored surfaces and are somewhat translucent, so, like the original ponies, the color of the plastic underneath plays a role in how the final product looks. They come in multiple colors. I’d suggest a mix to get the right multi colored sheen.

If you can get this pony I say go for it! Even if you don’t want to keep it, it’s likely you can pass it on to another interested person on here. Best of luck!

Pony Corral / Re: Who do you think are easier to find?
« on: January 06, 2022, 11:06:27 PM »
I agree, the earlier ones.

The last 2 years are kind of an exception anyway because their distribution missed out the biggest markets of USA and Canada, meaning there are fewer around anyway.

And it's not necessarily the case that all early G1s are easier to find than later.  I mean, Mountain Boys are probably less common than peekaboo babies...even though neither were sold everywhere...

But in general the early ones and especially those with playsets. Or here, the Groom and Style set (what the US calls "Year 3 earth". They're pretty iconic here I guess, in the absence of the early pegasus and unicorns as toys.

Ironically over here that means those y2 pegs and unicorns are like gold dust, and mountain boys and tales ponies are easier to find (it's all relative) than Firefly and Medley.

LOL, please, I’ve got plenty of lovely Medleys and Firefly’s I’d happily trade you for an Ice Crystal! Or even just Gypsy? She went way up in price while I wasn’t looking.

I’ve seen Camilla D'Errico at cons before! She walks the line between fine art (I believe she gets written up in Hi Fructose from time to time) and fan art. Despite having reached that level of success as an artist she still sells her prints at cone where she got her start, which is pretty cool! The thing is that pop culture references are often a feature of a certain style called low brow art. Because the art often has a statement to make, I think it’s rarely seen as copyright violation. At least that’s my understanding! Some people make entire careers painting cartoon characters in compromising situations.

With the unicorn calendar, those color schemes are very clearly inspired by FIM! But I doubt they could prosecute the artist if she didn’t use their images they use on packaging and claim them as her original work.

That said, I’m not an expert on copyright law by any means!

Pony Corral / Re: Help: How to re-scent scented ponies?
« on: January 06, 2022, 10:34:50 PM »
I know there was a pony hair company that sold or sells scents you could boil the plastic hair in, but I don’t remember which one it was!

Best of luck in getting better answers. I’ll be watching this one! My childhood Sugar Apple still has a bit of her scent and I frequently lock her in a ziplock bag to amp it up. But if there’s more I can do to bump up that nostalgic scent I’d love to know!

Pony Corral / Re: Vinegar to remove rust stains from pony tails?
« on: December 29, 2021, 03:35:29 PM »
Posting an update since I see a lot of views on here! I know pony hair is nylon and I found a chart online about how nylon reacts to exposure to various chemicals, including vinegar and, hilariously enough, chocolate syrup. Since it’s an excellent match for both on that chart, I’m about to detail a very rusty Cotton Candy, give her tail a soak in vinegar, and see what happens! I will keep you guys posted on the results. Especially with all the talk recently about how restoring very common ponies may not be financially worth the time it takes, and frankly because I’m sure many collectors have a poor condition bin they’re looking for the time to tend to, I’m getting really curious about ways to batch process the restoration of a lot of ponies! I’ll keep you guys posted about my results.

Here is a link to the chart!

Pony Corral / Re: NEED HELP: removing perfumes & artifical fragrances?
« on: December 29, 2021, 03:14:13 PM »
Thank you both so much! I really appreciate this and I LOVE when people cross reference with other disciplines for their restoring knowledge. I’ll have to look into car stuff!

I know some ponies are sensitive to UV exposure, and about the pink hair, but those things certainly bear repeating! One other question - I would imagine the vinyl parts of a car that get UV damage get a lot more exposure due to being inside an object with windows that’s usually stored outside. My understanding of the average MLP sun fading/UV light box session is that that only takes a matter of hours/days. Wouldn’t shorter exposure time mean less potential for long term damage?

Hope I’m not derailing too much but @babysquirmy, aside from the ponies on the do not sun fade list, I’m very curious to hear more about why UV is bad for g1 ponies! I thought sun fading was a pretty accepted restoration technique these days? I haven’t heard that before and typing UV into the MLParena search bar doesn’t return any results on that particular issue. Is it more about known issues with UV exposure or uncertainty about the long term effects of sun on vinyl? Overall I’m fascinated by the subject of original vs restored ponies and their value to collectors. Thanks for the insight!

I must also back everyone up on the effectiveness of the baking soda litter de-stinking technique! The stuff I used had a scent already so the ponies came out smelling artificially flowery, but that scent fades very quickly (a matter of days/hours) and the original nasty smell never returns. I’ve even used it on an art toy that had a plastic smell I couldn’t be in the room with - one it came with from the factory, not a smell from exposure to anything - and it even tamed THAT, so it’s very effective. I believe you can get the same baking soda litter without the scent, too. Best of luck!

Pony Corral / Vinegar to remove rust stains from pony tails?
« on: December 26, 2021, 02:10:06 PM »
Has anyone tried soaking rust stained pony hair in white vinegar to remove the stains? I ask because my BF soaked a pair of rusty bolt cutters in plain white vinegar and the rust simply vanished in a few days! I know that oxi clean and tooth paste are both used on rust stains, but if vinegar won’t harm nylon pony hair, it certainly would be a useful and cheap way to pretreat a large number of rusty tails. I’ve seen people mention using vinegar to help set the color in dyed pony or doll hair, so I assume it doesn’t harm the fiber or dry it out to much, though if I’m wrong on that front I’d love to hear about your experiences! Thanks folks!

Another point - I’ve noticed a few eBay listings lately mention of ponies have had their washers replaced with zip ties. I know most of us collectors prefer zip ties as it means never having to deal with rust again, but I wonder if some collectors will ever become more stringent about ponies having their original washers? If so…an intact washer could probably be fixed up with a vinegar soak and popped back in if you planned to sell the pony.

Really interesting to read about electroplated plastic! I didn’t know about that process.

I just saw a video where someone tested out a product called Liquid Mirror. It’s a highly reflective paint made by the same folks who make a product similar to Vantablack but without the restrictions on who can use it. It’s pricey but it might look really good in this application! Here’s where you can buy some: https://www.culturehustleusa.com/products/mirror?gclid=Cj0KCQjwqKuKBhCxARIsACf4XuFe7p3zdh4mRG2gL69rcCtQ5WuMzq-pKfkTUZvLNKI695NywGBHbr4aAm6-EALw_wcB

And here’s a link to a video of someone testing it out: https://youtu.be/jyXTr32ZHJk

Hope that’s useful!

Customs / Re: Cricut to make symbol stencils?

I have in fact heard of people using printable heat transfer vinyl and a cricut to make decals for plastic. I hear you can use a small https://www.amazon.com/Clover-NR-632-inThe-Adapters-Setin/dp/B001BLU4SA/ref=asc_df_B001BLU4SA/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=416944445647&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4718096825406635830&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1024479&hvtargid=pla-409360406834&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=96811480951&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=416944445647&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4718096825406635830&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1024479&hvtargid=pla-409360406834 iron to heat the vinyl transfer and apply the design to the plastic. I’ve never tried it - it requires an ink jet printer, I believe, which I don’t have - but honestly the restorations that would be possible if the MLP community adopted this technique would be impressive!

Thanks for sharing this! That's an interesting tool...I can think of a few things I could use that for other than pony-related stuff, actually. I added it to my amazon list to save it, and I'll do some research on making the decals with heat-transfer vinyl.

Glad to hear it helped! I can’t wait to see what you do, and I agree that it’s a method with a lot of potential non-pony applications.
