Pony Corral / Re: Best places to find cheap G1's?
« on: March 29, 2015, 12:27:39 AM »
I have a reasonable amount of luck at my local Value Village (known as Savers in the U.S.). I go once a week and sometimes twice. At Value, as well as many other thrift stores, toys are bagged in assorted mini-lots. Often ponies (new, old, fakies) will get bagged together so they're easy to spot. But you have to check all the bags! Just today, I turned over a bag not expecting to find anything, because what I could see was mostly McDonald's type toys of things like The Chipmunks. But on the other side, there was a Seawinkle!

Thrift stores are a big reason why I got into collecting ponies, actually. Two years ago I moved to a neighbourhood with thrift stores near by and so I developed my weekly habit, and came across G1s while I was hunting for other '80s toys, and when I saw ponies I had to bring them home.

I've said before and will say again, though, that the collecting community is the best way to build up the basics of your collection affordably.

Pony Brag Arena / Re: Pony mail: Sticky to go with twin Sniffles

Did you brag about Sniffles?  I seem to remember a brag along those lines!  Congrats on finding her long lost twin.  Posts like this really make me smile :D

No, I didn't -- weirdly enough I wasn't on the Arena at that point, yet!

I had to ID Sniffles when I brought (him? I felt like he was a him but maybe that was just due to the blue hair) home, and I was a little disappointed that it was a twin! The incompleteness didn't bother me TOO much, but fortunately I didn't have to wait too long to have the set. :D

Lady Moondancer was selling a Sticky, so I had to buy her to match the Sniffles I found at the thrift store last summer. Now they are a happy pair

I started collecting them in 2003 when G3 was released. I spotted one on the shelf at a Toys 'R Us and instantly went:

Hahahaha that gif is perfect!

G3s have really grown on me. I used to not be interested when I found them at the thrift store but now I am appreciating their charm!

But now I have actually started collecting MLP G1. So what changed? Well, I think it might come down to one pony ... Fizzy.

Fizzy is a lovely pony to begin with! My sister's first pony was Fizzy. She had her second hand, on her third birthday, all wrapped up in paper and she was so excited because she had her own pony for the first time, instead of just playing with the handful I had.

I didn't even have to own Fizzy to be inspired by her -- I actually just got Fizzy a couple weeks ago, and had been buying other pastel-ish ponies for some time. Anyway, that story about your little sister is the sweetest! Also, Taffeta, I really have appreciated reading your posts especially in the CP Sundance thread. That was all so fascinating!!!

OK. But also, I just realized that you mean for this to be FiM ponies and not actual G1 ponies -- is it OK what I requested??
I meant this to be for any ponies!  What you requested is completely fine.

Ooooh! I would love this one done as Fizzy! I've never had an adoptable before. So is it enough to say I'd like a G1 Fizzy with a pink tail bow?

Here she is!

Aaaaahhhh!!! Yay! She's so lovely!!

Pony Corral / What sparked your desire to collect MLP?
« on: March 24, 2015, 09:39:47 AM »
I was thinking about how I'm relatively new to collecting ponies, though I've been collecting other vintage toy lines (starting with Strawberry Shortcake) for a number of years.

For a long time, I looked at ponies and thought, "That is WAY too intense of a collection to get into" given the incredible number of ponies and varieties available for collection (I'm thinking of G1 here but the same goes for other gens!)

But now I have actually started collecting MLP G1. So what changed? Well, I think it might come down to one pony ... Fizzy. I kept seeing pics of her and she just drew me in. She was my gateway collecting pony, that got me to dig out and clean my childhood ponies and start displaying them, plus my new acquisitions. Another impetus was that in the last couple of years I have been thrifting a LOT and when I see a G1 pony I cannot leave it behind. Same goes for G4 and good condition G3s now, too!

I know some of you technically never "started" collecting because you have been into ponies since the very first days in the '80s. But what turned you from a casual admirer into a collector?

Pony Corral / Re: I need to rant!! Boot sale vendor prices!
« on: March 23, 2015, 09:41:02 AM »
Everything said in this thread is true. I think it also separates out the dealers who are fans/collectors themselves from those who are just in it for profit. Getting more into the collecting community (both MLP and other toy lines) has made me realize that for most of us, we just want to make sure these toys are preserved by people who appreciate them -- which is also the case for antique dealers like ladybastilla's grandfather.

Sometimes these high prices come from ignorance -- people who see a 1980s copyright mark and assume an item will fetch a high price, regardless of condition or completeness, or even what the item is! But there's really no excuse for that ignorance, and there is NEVER an excuse for being rude to people who point out that your prices might be on the high side.

For me, the boldness of the Year 3's makes them my pic. The Year 2's are nice and everything, but even though I love pastels, the soft palette doesn't scream RAINBOW to me!

I only recently learned about Celestia and when I first saw her I was like   , she is so amazing!! Congratulations!

I've found Mimic on two separate occasions at my local flea market, each time for $3 - $4.  Mind you I found them years apart.

W O W! What kind of condition were they in??
