Depends what you're interested in really!! I don't know about anyone else but I tend to come up with a theme or concept in my head before even looking at baits, hair etc. Lately nature themes have been appealing to me personally but it could be literally ANYTHING...

Favourite TV shows, books etc - I've considered doing a range of Game Of Thrones characters for example, have completed a few witch ponies, have done a pony based off Vikings, etc.

Sub-cultures - I'm a bit 'goth' I suppose so easily think of creating punk, metalhead or gothic ponies. So many sub-cultures out there to explore!!

Pegasus, unicorns, merponies etc! I'm going to try sculpting a set of wings from scratch at some stage.

If all else fails do some digging on the internet and look at what other customs people have come up with - obviously you're don't want to steal anyone else's idea but sometimes you can get an idea or a concept from viewing other people's work.

Good luck :)

Thanks everyone, it's always so nice to get so much positive feedback from this forum!

Saw these on FB, they are lovely! Especially the blue spiky tail :lovey:

Thank you!! I really don't like the blue scales LOL, think it looks more reptilian than fishy but it's nice to hear that someone else likes them!

Too cute! Great eyes too, awesome job :)

Extra thank you for commenting on the eyes lol! Even though I despise painting (and somewhat cheat with eyes by leaving the original design and basically just paint directly over the top) I was extra patient with these guys, took almost two weeks to repaint 4 eyes hahaha but for once I'm pretty pleased with the results! Thanks for noticing

My latest project was supposed to be quick and easy yet somehow still took 8 weeks to finish!!

Both ponies were rehaired in various shades of Dolly Hair - I'm thinking of curling the manes still, not sure? Anyway, the back legs were chopped off lol and tails were sculpted from polymer clay, with a wire frame. I tried new methods of sculpting scales, personally I'm not a fan of the blue tail but the damn things take so long to sculpt that I'm not re-doing it

Eyes were repainted, as were ears and hooves and the purple pony has a new ear sculpted from polymer clay. Hope you guys like them! Feel free to make hair style suggestions!

Absolutely stunning as always Darkhorse!! The gold really makes them stand out, love them!

Eye painting has to be one of the most tedious of making a custom in my opinion!! I'm currently working on a pair of teeny tiny ponies and have just finished the eyes for both ponies - it has taken me a week to paint four eyes!

I've never been a great painter so almost always sculpt cutie marks out of polymer clay, unfortunately can't avoid painting eyes. Not sure what everyone else does but I leave the original eyes on the pony and paint over the top where possible. Good quality, tiny brushes are vital to achieve the tiny lines and details. As everyone else has already said, practice makes perfect. I find that being patient and holding my breath also helps!

Amazing and droolworthy as always Darkhorse!!

I'm struggling with eye repaints, working on a pair of Teeny Tiny ponies at the moment and what I wouldn't give to be able to paint flawless eyes and lashes like yours!! *wistful sigh!*

BlackCurtains she is awesome!!

I love concepts like this, the skulls, chains and leather add so much character. Mad sculpting skills too, those skulls are unreal! Definitely a Mad Max vibe

pandabear_chan - I love your ponies! Happy Nuts is especially awesome!!!

Don't suppose you remember what shade of grey/silver hair you used for TwilightWhisper's Persona pony lol? That's a brilliant colour!

Hey great work! I absolutely hear you with the painting complaints - repainting eyes has got to be my least favourite part of making a custom! Finding quality paint brushes and paint definitely helps though!

I'm super impressed with the dye work though! She looks awesome

Griffin your Celtic pony is just beautiful!! I haven't done too much work with green - funny you should start with green though, as I have big plans for the future with a bait Minty and Tootsie!

My first Merpony..

Custom couple, Atomic and Biohazard. Ashamed to admit I used water decals for the cutie marks instead of hand painting - rookie mistake! Still have these guys in storage somewhere, maybe I should try painting them properly..

Customs / Re: I want to make customs
« on: November 26, 2019, 05:05:02 PM »
I think the majority of us make customs because we enjoy the process of creating a new pony, not necessarily just to sell them. The few customisers who have regular sales and commissions have years of experience customising.

As for advice, I agree with thetailrustedtealeaf, start by checking out all the tutorials that are available online. I also start my customs with a specific idea and colour theme in mind and I know my strengths and weaknesses - I'm better at sculpting, therefore I tend to focus on sculpting extras on my ponies rather than painting. Good luck!!
