I'm really enjoying everyone's perspective on this. I get that they went with sea pony because it would be easiest to say and with MLPs past with sea ponies, but as a G1 gal, I do get a bit of an eye twitch when I see a pony that looks like a a merpony, but is called a sea pony. I got used to merpony instead of hippocampus originally though (I love mythology, but for the sake of the toys, went with hasbro's merpony term), so I'll get used to the new sea pony, but out of fun, I feel like drawing a ton of different sea pones and coming up with different looks and body types and labeling them  It's interesting, I always considered sea ponies to be like sea horses, thus no legs and figured merponies were the MLP version of a hippocampus etc, but after multiple generations, various publications (comics and books), seven seasons of the current gen, pink and yellow people in Equestria girls, and now the movie... I give up I'll just roll with it. Thanks so much for the input and replies guys!

i used to be quite embarassed about shopping for toys, especially by myself, but ive all about gotten over it. i used to care a lot about how the store ppl thought about me and what i bought, but then i got a job working retail and now i understand that they just couldnt care less. Adults buy toys all the time. wether it be for themselves, or for their kid, or whatever, if they dont tell me i dont care and i dont assume anything about them. its just one more customer out of a million.
ive lately being trying my hardest to get over my fear of FILMING in the toy section, so i can start toy vlogging.
while checking out buying tons of toys is one thing, i sometimes feel like pointing cameras at all the toys is different. but, with this day and age and how many toy channels there are on youtube, i feel more and more like they wouldnt care about that either.
Oooo, what's your youtube channel? I can see how you might be shy about filming while you're in a store, but you're right, I hardly bat an eye when people have their phone out and look like they're taking pictures or filming. On a side note, my neighbors see me outside spraying finish on ponies and dolls that I'm customizing. I can't imagine what goes through their heads when they see me spraying toys?

This thread warms my heart  My ponies are some of the only toys I remember playing with (next to my Jurassic Park toys) and fill me with joy. I don't know about you guys, but when I find a MLP from my childhood, I get that feeling again from when I was a kid and I cherish it.

I'm somewhere between a collector and brony/pegasister. I'm a huge fan of the show and it's good character development and writing, but I grew up on the G1 show... when I first started re-collecting, I had roommates and they obviously thought it was weird, and I was super embarrassed, but now I've got my own place and my friends that come over love my collection For some people, it becomes your defining trait (which is stupid because tons of people have hobbies that they don't get identified with), but those are people you interact with regularly. If it's at a store, I just assume they can't assume anything about me unless I'm decked-out in pony gear. If I'm buying a toy, it could be for me, a random kid in my family, or an art project. These stores see adults buy toys everyday. I say just buy stuff you want without any concerns about it and if you live in an area where being a Brony can be dangerous (I've read about Bronies getting asked to leave or being beaten up by crazies etc) if someone asks you if you're a brony or if the toys are for you, say it's for your niece, kid sister etc. I'm ok with people not being open about it if it's a matter of safety. Some people are stubborn, ignorant, and dangerous, and I'd rather they butt-out of your business and you feel safe and enjoy your hobby without confrontation and negativity.

I agree they are mer-ponies more than sea ponies.
For what ever reason the new style reminds me of the G3 breezies.
I feel like they have a bug like quality to the face and they have those fins that just look like wings to me.
Maybe that is what you get when you breed G3 breezies with G1 sea ponies.

I love my G1 flutter ponies and my windy wings (which I am assuming were the first breezies?), but I literally gave away my G4 breezies. I think they look weird.
I double checked the descriptions in a couple of places and it looks like everywhere is calling them sea ponies. Whatever I guess :/ The design also conflicts with their Under the Sparkling Sea mer/sea ponies as well.
I think at this point, with comics, books, the show, Equestria Girls, and now the movie, I should stop trying to hope for any sort of continuity and solid world building.

Now that the toys and trailers are out for the new movie, I am seeing a lot of fans writing about the "seaponies," but the new design matches merponies. Are we just ignoring that and referring to them all as seaponies now? So confused. I posted something similar when the toys first came out and I believe we agreed they looked like merponies, but what are they calling them in the movie and on the store shelf?

Yup. There's a thread dedicated to it. Some people are calling them sea ponies, but they're actually merponies.
