Pony Corral / Re: The truth behind the 12 inch Chinese Plushies
« on: July 31, 2014, 12:04:15 AM »
I got my Nightmare Moon! I love her! :inlove: I hope no one minds me bumping up this thread with some pictures and a kind of rambling review.

I purchased her directly from the Onlyfactory backer's website, where she was only about $30, including international shipping. I was not a backer but I was still able to order her there. The shipping even included a tracking number, which worked well enough for me to see when she'd shipped, when she'd arrived in the states, and when she'd been delivered to my house. It took about two weeks. I see she's up on 123cosplay now, but for ~$40 instead. I don't really feel she's worth quite that much, though I am definitely happy with my $30 purchase. Here she is!

I would say the stock image is quite accurate, mine is just a little less poised, probably due in large part to her trip across the world to me during which she was pretty much folded up in a thin bubble mailer. I wouldn't say she suffered any real damage though!

If there's one thing I think the packaging adversely affected, I would say it's her mane. It doesn't really want to stick out straight, rather, it likes to kind of curl towards/across her face. Maybe my Nightmare Moon is shy? :P It would have been nice if her mane were stuffed or even wired so it would have that extra stability.

More pictures, including comparison shots with my Aurora Luna!

She came with this hang-tag on her ear. She is AMAZINGLY soft! Seriously, it's a low-pile fabric, but it feels wonderful, like a short, silky velvet. You can also see that the very bottom decorative edge pieces of her helmet are not sewn to her, I guess for a bit of a 3D touch? I have them tucked under the band of her necklace, which is also a flat piece of felt that is not sewn down to her skin.

Her front hooves turn in towards each other very slightly, which honestly I think is kind of adorable, and her horn leans just a bit to the left. It's not super noticeable in person. I am holding her mane to the side in this picture, and you can also see the painted-on stars that represent the sparkles here. I would have preferred real sparkles, but I like the look of these, they are nice and varied in size and I think the effect looks good in person.

Here you can see how she's kind of Miss Flat-Mane. The darker blue area around the outside of her mane and tail also seems to be some painted, and in a few places it's kind of crackly? Not super noticeable though.

Her tail is nicely stuffed though! It doesn't hover off the ground like the promo photos, partly because it is attached to a small spot on her rump and is too heavy to be supported off the ground there. However, this ends up a being a good thing, as using the tail as kind of a kick-stand is what really stabilizes her and allows her to stand. :P (She could probably stand without it, it's just a big help.)

Her wings are attached behind her ears, which keeps them standing up, a feature I like. Her display side wing does kind of cover her cutie mark, but that's okay. Her other wing wants to poke out behind the other one instead of lining up perfectly, but I think the effect that it causes is nice. She has her splotch and embroidered cutie mark on both sides!

And here she is with Aurora Luna! As you can see, Luna is a bit bigger, particularly in the head and neck area. Luna is standing up very straight, while NMM is kind of leaning back on her heels (I think she looks coy! :)). Luna's hair has real sparkles. They are wonderful! Her horn, wings, and hoof covers are made of a sparkly material as well. I love this.

Luna stands like a champion! She doesn't seem to be wired, but she is way more steady on  her feet than NMM. I wish NMM was stuffed as well as Luna, as I figure that's mainly what's making the difference here. NMM does not feel understuffed when you hold her, but in comparison with Luna you realize she could be much firmer.

Look at the cute little grumpy face she's making in front view. Her crown and her necklace are also flat pieces of felt, and her necklace is not sewn down to her skin. Luna is still soft to the touch, but she's not as incredibly velvety as NMM.

Moon-butt only has her splotch on one side, which was a very small disappointment for me. Her hair has sparkles all around, but her tail only has sparkles on the display side, strangely. All her hair is unstuffed, formed of little curvy tubes.

Overall, they are both wonderful plushes, and I am so happy to add them both to my herd! Welcome home, my sweet, beautiful Moon Princesses! :lovey:

kakenterprise, you sound like you are making awesome strides towards decluttering!

June, congratulations on finishing your exams! I am a student myself so I know how tough it can be to focus when you'd rather do almost anything else (I know it's really bad when I find myself longing to do other things I don't even normally like, like say, cleaning the microwave).

Crowning_Glory, I am so happy to hear you have been doing well these past weeks! I bet living in a new place will make it easier for you to work on your goals. :)

SeashellInBubbles, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for that post! I have had a horrible summer professionally and emotionally and that really made me feel better, and gave some great advice about how I might approach situations more positively in the future.

They look beautiful! Very realistic. I am so impressed by people like Clonecommander with the dedication to become good at graphic arts like drawing and painting!

Emilie Autumn is my all time favourite singer/musician  :lovey:

I love Emilie SO MUCH! I have seen her in concert twice, it was magical. :lovey: I am very eagerly awaiting The Devil's Carnival 2, she is reprising her role as the Painted Doll! (The filmmakers of TDC are two of my most favorite filmmakers, too.) I actually noticed your FLAG flag in your collection photos, I love it!

Let's see. This varies a lot but the staples are:

HIM
AFI
Kamelot
Metsatöll (a friend on tumblr got me into them and I love them)
Hanson
Depeche Mode
Placebo
Queen
Orphaned Land
Rammstein

I used to be very fond of Nightwish but their singer shenanigans have rather effectively killed my enthusiam. :/

The singer shenanigans (apt phrasing) have really gone a long way to kill my enthusiasm for Nightwish too (it's knocked them off my top favorites list for sure, I just can't deny how much I ADORE most of the Tarja-era stuff, and even a few more recent songs here and there that weren't ruined by Anette's horrible singing voice), but you should give them another chance when/if they release anything with the NEW singer, Floor Jansen. I saw them in concert with Floor singing, and it was just wonderful! They even played Ghost Love Score, for the first time in a long while they said, and Floor totally did its majesty justice. Fun fact, the opening band at that show was Kamelot! They were super good too, my friend liked them more than Nightwish even (which is who we'd come to see), haha.

My absolute top favorites, in no order, are:

Marilyn Manson
Otep
Evanescence (Amy Lee)
Emilie Autumn
HIM
Within Temptation

And I am DEEPLY enamoured with a local musician named Lacy Rose - she really reminds me of Emilie Autumn, though Lacy is a piano player instead of a violinist (she does have violinists and cellists play on her songs, though). Just like Emilie, Lacy is inspired by classic literature and gothic themes - she actually calls a lot of her songs "Ghost Music", inspired by spirits. :) She's not as industrial as EA, but she is an excellent lyricist and pianist, and her voice is AMAZING. I feel every EA fan should check her out: http://lacyrosemusic.com/music

I've got the bat baby, the werewolf baby, and one of the vampire babies around here somewhere. :)

I REALLY LOVE that a line like this, of cute goth plushies from an artist with a singular vision, seems to be thriving! And in theory, I love all of them. (Baby vampires? Ghost ponies? UNDEAD KITTENS?! Be still my beating heart!)

But in practice, it seems like every new release has some little flaw (in my eyes) that puts me off of it...One flaw that almost all of them share is that they're not quite big enough to be really huggable. They're tall enough, but they're too flat (especially the vampire babies), if that makes any sense. I know if they were bigger they would take up more room, but I really like to be able to cradle my plushes in my arms, and with these being babies, that urge is only increased. I have tons of Skelanimals and a Gloomy Bear in this scale, and they are perfectly huggable, so I don't know what is up with this design that makes them so awkwardly petite.

Secondly, while I LOVE the look and feel of the fluff on my bat and werewolf, I was very alarmed to discover that I can pull it out with my fingers (it was an accident). So now I'm scared to pet and play with them as much as I'd like. (I am really particular about not damaging my toys.) And the fluffier designs are the ones I'm most attracted to! Now, it's definitely possible that it's not as bad as I think, or isn't as bad on other plushies as it is on my two. But it gives me pause.

Finally, there's just something about the aesthetic...I very nearly love it, but there's always some little thing that bugs me, like the Ghost Pony's weird eyes, or the fact that the kitty is teal! I just can't do the teal. The line is so close to being perfect for me, but it just isn't. With every new release I hope it'll be one I just love, and it's just...not. I guess I should be happy though, at least it's easier on my wallet! (Silly brain, making me feel like I should be enthusiastically collecting and unequivocally loving all of these things, and then making me feel bad about the fact that I don't...)

I sure wouldnt be surprised if they made a GitD wave for the Mini's. And if they made a Glitter mini wave as well.

Wow, if they put out a whole wave of glittery minis I might die of happiness! :dribble:

I know! I think that would be awesome of them to do. It would give everyone a chance to have a glitter.....but of course the size difference would still keep the big ones as chase. I really hope they do because I have had absolutely no luck of finding a single glitter in my area.  -_-

I feel the same way. :)

Ooh, the Art of Aurora Maleficent mug is beautiful, but I just can't do $15 + shipping for it. ^^; (Maybe if I used mugs more, but I feel it would be under-appreciated here at that price.)

Eevee, I just love your whole room! My favorite part is the Sailor Moon wands, though. I'm so jelly!

Personally, I'd like to see some owner photos of that..buildable Luna? I don't really understand what it...is, exactly. I mean, clearly some kind of pony, but I just don't think I get it. (I saw it for sale on Amazon, and I don't see the ponies I want in store very often, so I'm just wondering if I need to order it for my own Luna army!)

I ordered one! I'll have to take photos when she arrives. It's basically an open-ended snap-together model kit. You can make canon characters or use the parts to create an OC.

Ooh, thank you! I would love to see your photos.

It doesn't help you with your in-person problem, but I just ordered my Aurora Luna from a vendor on eBay for a good bit cheaper than the ToyWiz price, and she shipped today. :) So it's worth it to look there too if you go the online route.

Pony Corral / Re: What started you collecting ponies again?
« on: July 27, 2014, 03:42:48 AM »
My ex-boyfriend of many years is a huge brony, so he of course liked for me to watch Friendship is Magic with him. I like the show, and I love toy collecting, so I thought starting to collect a few ponies here and there would be a fun activity we could do together. Fast forward two years later, and I have new a boyfriend now, but the colorful plastic ponies are still here, and I am always on the lookout for new ones to add to my herd!

Besides all that, one of my favorite toys as a child was my G1 Pony Bride (she's still a treasured part of my collection ). I don't think I had any other MLPs, but I did have lots of ceramic unicorns and other little plastic animal toys I just loved. So between that nostalgia, and my discovery of the Arena (which both helps to fuel and facilitate my collecting with the awesome discussions and sales pages), I'm hooked!

i have a photo of me and apple jack at bodnant gardens in 1984 she was my first pony and i still have her :D and all my childhood ponys  (about 150) when they stopped making the g1s i stopped collecting  and as i got older i saw less and less around and finaly i had them up in the attic where they stayed for about 2 years over this time my mum got cancer and passed away. as she had brought  most of them for me i wanted to see them again so i got them down and had a massive spa weekend for them being surounded by them made me feel less sad  as they hold alot of memories :), one day i went past the librery and they had new computers so went in and tried them looked on ebay and there was laods of g1 for sale also met my OH by then and he started getting  them for me :) i also found the arena  and joined up  now i have lots of pony mates and partner that doesent mind my collection :D

What a beautiful story, I'm so glad your ponies hold so many happy memories for you. :)

Your collection is amazing! :lovey:

I have been re-watching the original Japanese series in honor of Crystal myself, haha. :)

I hope someone releases new Sailor Moon fashion dolls!

If wearing your pony merch makes you happy you should wear it. :) Anyone who would be mean to you about it is not someone you want to interact with further, anyhow. And at the same time, it can help you find actual nice, like-minded people with similar interests.
