I have his styling size toy, from that big Target pack. I like his colors, but I'm still so disappointed they won't give the boys rooted manes. :(

Pony Brag Arena / First MOC G1 Pony!
« on: January 23, 2023, 05:19:54 PM »
Hi guys!! I'm back so shortly with another pony brag.

This past pay day, I decided to browse eBay for ponies. Getting that lot of G1 ponies from work had motivated me to work more on getting additions to my MLP collection. I came across a bid listing for Spring Song MOC. Spring Song is one of my favorite G1s, so I had to try my hand at bidding. I usually avoid bids and stick to BINs, but she's worth it to me. My maximum bid in the end was $80 and I ended up winning her for just under that, excluding tax and shipping. Overall I spent a little over $100 for her, which feels like a good deal, especially since she's one of my favorites. She arrived pretty quickly, too. I'm so happy to finally own a mint on card G1, especially one of my favorites.

Here she is on my wall!

I saw these! I think they look a lot better both the G4 styles (the full size fashion dolls I mean, the Minis were a lot better). I'm really excited about the fact that they're articulated.

Pony Corral / Re: Will G4 have a nostalgia wave?

I definitely have seen some nostalgia for G4 from people who were kids when it came out. Not sure how this will eventually reflect as far as merchandise goes in the long run. Like if someone was 5 or 6 when FiM first aired in October 2011 they would be what? 17 or 18 now? I know I have seen some teens and early adults reminisce about G4. Oftentimes unfortunately recalling weird brony creations they stumbled upon as children. :/

Even for me being in my 20s, I was technically a child when I got into MLP through G4, since I was a teenager and got into it I think right before high school.

G1:

Favorite: The variety! So many different ponies, fun gimmicks, the balance between the three main types of ponies is great. My favorite generation!

Least favorite: Some flaws these can get largely seem like huge oversights on Hasbro's part. As sweetstuff85 just points out above, things like flutter pony wings being so fragile. Also including metal inside of ponies intended to be bath toys (the adult sea ponies) is another strange decision to me. While fading pink can be annoying, I can see why that wouldn't have been something Hasbro would have thought about at the time (though I do question their use of it more in G2 onward, surely they would have known by then?).

G2:

Favorite: The gem eyes are really cute! There's also a lot of cute color schemes in this generation!

Least favorite: There are actually a couple things that bug me with this generation I want to point out. First obviously is the fact that it ended after just one year in the US, making them very hard to find here. I wish they were easier for me to get my hands on. But besides that, the balance between pony types here was not great. Much too Earth pony centered, with only a few unicorns and no pegasi if we don't include the clip on wings some unicorns came with.

G3:

Favorite: Fun, often bright and bold colors. Pretty good variety for the majority of the generation's run. Pony type balance wasn't quite as strong as in G1, but it was a lot better than in G2's. Also this generation has my favorite pegasus wings.

Least favorite: The Core 7 era. G3 was before my time collecting but I still feel like MLP hasn't been quite as exciting as it once was once the Core 7 era began. Ever since Hasbro has really seemed to latch onto the idea of MLP needing to have a core cast and I really think it doesn't, even though it's always been the case through my time collecting.

G3.5:

Favorite: The quality of these ponies is really good, they're very well made and durable, just like the main G3 ponies. I also think it's cute how there's varying heights between different characters. It's such a small detail but it's really neat to see how some ponies are taller than others (besides the obvious like Sweetie Belle being the shortest).

Least favorite: Core 7 again. :/

G4:

Favorite: Though I do generally prefer ponies be a bit bigger, the small size of G4s makes them more space efficient. I also definitely have a soft spot for this generation simply due to it being what got me into MLP in the first space (through FiM).

Least favorite: Mane 6. While not as bad as the Core 7 era of G3 due to the Mane 6 not being practically all we got, the toyline was still over saturated with Mane 6 releases. Also the quality of these got pretty bad in the later years.

G4.5 (Pony Life):

Favorite: The hair quality seemed to increase a lot from late G4 with these. At least the 4.5s I have seem to have pretty good hair. Also I think it's cool that the necks are jointed.

Least Favorite: Still focused on the Mane 6 of course....

G5:

Favorite: The hooves are really cute! They look a little more horsey due to these, despite the still not very horse-like faces (but really ever since G3.5 they haven't looked like horses lol).

Least favorite: The poor distribution and moving away from brushables as the focus, to the point where boy brushables only have brushable tails but have molded manes. Also the body type of the G5s makes the normal sized bruhables feel even smaller than G4s somehow. I don't think they actually are (I don't own any, all my G5s so far are styling size brushables), but they feel tiny to me.

Want them! Are they a sibling set like a lot of other pairs of baby ponies, given their matching symbols? If so, I really love that despite them being siblings, they have such different color schemes from one another. Ocean has one of my favorite pony color combos being orange and blue, while Coral also has a really fun color scheme. I like how Coral has three different hair colors, too.

Off Topic / Re: What are you listening to?
« on: January 13, 2023, 09:03:49 PM »
I am listening to the album Infinity by Devin Townsend. I just started listening to his stuff a few days ago and I'm working on going through his discography. Usually I get into artists chronologically but I'm more or less just picking at random with this one. This is the 14th one I've listened to now I think? Out of 28, about halfway there.

So uh, one more pony. I thought I already had Powder for some reason when I saw her, but it turns out I didn't. So I bought her today toward the end of my shift.

She cleaned up pretty nice besides she has a pink stain above her right symbol. I also feel like she has a minor case of head/body mismatch. Swear her head is a little darker than her body.

Holy guacapony! I don't know much about prices, but I know from the forums that Mimic is rare and sought after. I did a look on eBay earlier last night and ... DEAL OF THE DECADE?!?!? I think you win it!!!!

It's still hard to believe it's real!!! Mimic is one of the ones who was in the best condition, too. She doesn't really have any flaws that really stand out. The pink in her hair is a bit lighter than it should be, but it's not pure white. There are a couple tiny spots that didn't come off with the magic eraser but I might try again later, it's possible I just didn't scrub hard enough. But she is in overall very good shape. No major marks, her hair is soft and silky after I conditioned it, etc.

Most of the ponies in the lot had some sort of sticky pink stuff on them, I suspect from whoever had them as a kid having sticky candy hands and touching the ponies with them. This is why Cotton Candy was/is (still a work in progress lol) so gross because she had a lot of it all over her. And this stuff stained a good portion of the ponies. Mimic had a little bit on her, but thankfully it came off stain free.

OMG you got Mimic! That's so cool! Once upon a time I also worked at a thrift store that let us get first dibs on items... it was pretty awesome

Spoiler
on one of my off days someone donated megan's place and it sold the same day. I only ever found out because some of the accessories got left behind and I asked about them  >_<

Oh noooo I'm so sorry. :( I can't imagine how gutted I'd have been if these came in on my day off and Mimic sold to a customer lol. Maybe then I would have been alerted via text of the ponies then lol.

That's so awesome! It must be so cool to work at a thrift store.

It is! Though I don't think I would want to work at a Goodwill or similar one whee they have all sorts of rules for when employees can buy stuff lol. Working at the one I do not normally taking toys is a blessing on the wallet, too. I buy stuff from work sometimes but not constantly. We take furniture and I've bought a few furniture pieces for my room there.

Pony Brag Arena / G1 Haul from work!

Hello everyone! I've got my first MLP collection additions of the year! I work at a thrift store of sorts, though not one that generally takes things like clothes or toys. That being said, today toward the end of my shift (maybe about two hours before I was scheduled to clock off), a lady donated a lot of houseware items. Things like a cute set of dishes, some books (dishes and books both being things we do generally take), but also some older toys, including a decent number of G1 MLP (plus a fakie and a handful of G3.5s). People at work know I collect toys and specifically MLP since I've talked about it before, so they accepted them for me. I bought all of the ponies I didn't already have, plus a gross looking flat foot Cotton Candy just to clean her up even though I had one already. Included among them was also a Moondreamers toy, Roary.

Here they are! My manager priced them for me (we obviously cannot price items we intend to buy, leadership positions have to). Prices ranged from $2 for the gross Cotton Candy to $7 for Mimic, most were $3 or $5 depending on size. And yes, I did show her how much Mimic goes for. :P

I have given them a pony spa but they're still drying. I removed the heads of some whose heads seemed easy to remove to let them dry more effectively. I will post nice post-spa photos of everybody tomorrow, for now here's post-spa Mimic since she's obviously the star of the show.
