The Dollhouse / Re: Fashion Packs
« on: February 27, 2013, 12:24:43 AM »
There is a list, stickied at the top of the page: http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,283772.0.html Mandy is amazing at keeping it up to date!

There are five "waves" of fashion packs; most come in sets of four, with one exception so far. The majority of the cases share the same product code, so once the new stuff starts showing up, the older product becomes harder to find.

Wave 1/Scream Spirit: School sports themed, and the only one so far to include a fashion pack for one of the boys (Deuce). While this is the oldest set of fashions, people still occasionally find them in stores, although they tend to be places like large grocery stores (in the US anyway).

Wave 2/Day at the Maul: a double pack, with a complete outfit for Frankie and Draculaura, as well as a few accessories for Clawdeen.

Wave 2/School Club: Fashions inspired by after school clubs.

Wave 3/Cursed Cafe/Maul Sessions (not official names for the line): a casual line, with accessories that suggest hanging out at the maul (shopping bags, movie tickets, etc). This is the line that the Cleo outfit is from, and seems to be the one that had the spottiest distribution.

Wave 4/Cursed Cafe/Maul Sessions 2 (again, not official): another more casual line. Unlike the previous sets, there is a less cohesive feel to this collection of fashions.

Wave 5: These are the ones currently out on shelves, at least in the US. There are two different cases, one a "basic", with a more simple outfit than previous single pack fashions. Some of the patterns and designs feature in Scaris Clawdeen's travel diary/fashion sketchbook, suggesting that they were designed by her for the Scaris fashion competition.

The second case for wave five are the deluxe fashions. These contain two outfits, one pair of shoes, jewelry, belt and a purse/bag.

I open all my dolls. I like to style and pose them. I rarely keep them out of their stock, but I do like to redress them from time to time as well. I did initially pause before opening my SDCC exclusives, but aside from lack of space, I decided I couldn't properly enjoy them while they were all packed up.

I've never been concerned with their value; there is no telling whether or not a playline doll will maintain it's value over the years.

Would this also include Sasha from the Styling Starz line?  I've been searching high and low for her!  Finally bought her on Ebay.  All my stores still have piles of the rest of them

Sorry for the confusion about the names   I just refer to the girls by their shortened names because I haven't taken the time to get to know them and I find them to be kinda ridiculous.  Plus my spelling is SO very bad!  Wish the Arena had spell check!  Not that that would help me with crazy bratzillaz names

Oh, no confusion! I was just clarifying, since technically Sashabella is a different character :)  I really wish they'd given the 'zillaz their own names instead of trying to saddle them with weird versions of the main Bratz dolls lol.

I think it is more that in certain parts of Europe, dark skinned dolls don't really sell well at all and MGA doesn't want to bother having a different case configuration for Europe. (Like Mattel does with the Princesses, the Europe ones never have Tiana or Jasmine) Of course they could just do a case with all of the others and Sasha and then a case of all the others minus Sasha but I'm guessing the configuration they have now gets the most store orders. (MGA seems very money motivated for some reason)

I just think it's ironic, coming from a company and toy line that constantly pointed out how their dolls were more ethnically diverse. Aside from that, claiming that the AA/non-caucasian dolls don't sell is somewhat flawed; they aren't always marketed properly, and some stores may opt out of buying a single case of one doll. All the stores around me stock Sasha/Sahsabella, but I have heard that she's harder to find in different parts of the US. I could understand single-packing her if she didn't do well, but just putting her in her own case is ridiculous.

I think I may go and pick up some liquid fabric softener tomorrow and attempt to tame Meygana's mane. Right now, she's looking like Meridia, and not in a good way!

The Dollhouse / Re: MH Poll #7: Which is your favorite version of Deuce?

Of my three Deuces, DotD is my favorite. I love his little flopped over snakehawk, and the outfit is on point.

The Dollhouse / Re: wondering about MH vs Bratzillas
« on: February 25, 2013, 11:15:26 PM »
MH did come before Bratzillaz; aside from the "supernatural school" theme of both franchises, they aren't that similar. The 'zillaz are all witches (even the new vampire and mermaid characters), and there's a lot more focus on being fashionistas in the 'zillaz world.

The MH dolls can wear Bratzillaz clothing, although it tends to be a bit loose. This is particularly noticeable in the shoes and around the torso, because those areas are rather unique to the MH design. Bratzillaz have a harder time wearing the MH fashions; they have thicker torsos, so the outfits don't fasten properly in the back. It also tends to limit the motion of the legs. And because MH have such long (but fairly narrow) feet with a high arch, their shoes do not fit the 'zillaz properly.

I've never tried to switch the heads, but the skin tones on MH would be hard to match on most 'zillaz. Also, the 'zillaz aren't designed to have their limbs removed, so using them on MH isn't really possible. Well, maybe possible, but not without tools and potentially ruining both dolls.

Hope that answered your questions :)

Okay, so it seemed like they short-changed Sashabella in the early releases of the original dolls. Now there are boxes and shelf labels for just her. Think the same thing could happen with Vampelina and Fianna? I am just DYING to get my hands on a Vampelina. *whiny voice*

It's funny you say that.  Today in my hunting I saw a row full of Sasha and thought that was STRANGE because I remember everyone freaking out looking for her :P  Kinda cleared up my "Huh?" moment

Sasha/Sashabella is typically shipped in her own case. Why MGA does this is beyond me, because it does NOT go over well in the doll community; aside from smacking of racial segregation, the character is pretty popular. Anyway, since the character (or characters, since Sashabella is supposed to be a separate character) is in her own case, she gets her own product code and shelf slot.

As time goes on, I think the new characters will become easier to find, especially if the case assortment is changed up. I'm not really sure how companies decide which dolls will be double packed, but I suspect that part of the reason new characters are typically short-packed is to gauge how popular the character will be.

The shoes and handbags are amazing! I love how there's an octopus on Lagoona's shoes to match her hairclip. I love the octopus/tentacle theme we've seen her sporting recently.

I followed the link in the pics, and I was happy to see that this particular Lagoona has a cuter face than the one we saw in the original pics. However, it does look like she doesn't come with earrings :(

Oh, I didn't take what you said as a bad thing, angelfish. I just wanted to clarify what I was saying :) Also, as much as I love MH, I wanted to be clear that I wasn't white-knighting Mattel and their "build your own" mis-steps. I like MH better than 'zillaz, but I love my witchy gals!

Not sure what link you couldn't see, here's the one that I posted the link for. Obviously, not my picture it is MonsterHighDMs from Flickr. I'm not sure how to credit pictures with links under the picture.

Much better picture!!! I'm adoring both of them! I wish they would give Lagoona bangs or a side bang like her basic. I'm not a fan of her without some sort of bangs.

Yes!! She looks amazing with bangs!!! Granted, I like bangs. But she has a fivehead without them. I'm also a fan of the more fishy/amphibious facemold from the earlier waves.

I don't actually mind Lagoona. She's not particularly imaginative, but what's new? The only thing I patently hate is the yellow hair that some of her latest dolls seem to be sporting. It's not a good contrast for her pale blue skin or the streaks. They need to go back to the blonde they were using.

I really like Cleo; the makeup is gorgeous, and I love how they placedthe teal streaks on this version. Since it's an exclusive, I wawn't expecting anything really major; I think the set is a nice balance between the basic and deluxe Scaris dolls. Now, if only I could see the shoes they're wearing...

They are anywhere from $25-29.99US.

Actually I find their quality to be just as good as the CAM sets.  No, there aren't the details like fins, scaling and all that but the plastic is solid and very rubbery but a good rubbery.  I don't think a SAW Zilla would break if you dropped her.  The only thing I don't like is that the hands on all the Zillaz are like mittens..I wish their hand sculpts were more graceful.  And..because the parts come off their legs can pivot at the knee like MH and Fashionistas!

As for the clothes, the designs aren't as edgy as MH but the fabrics are nicer and the wigs, all 3 are saran and much nicer than the first few CAM sets.  It's only the two latest sets, the Mummy/Gorgon and the Ice/Blob Girls that have nice wigs.  The wigs that came with the first two CAM sets were IMO, crap.  Where SAW lacks is the design of the shoes, accessories etc.

Not sure if you were responding to me; but if you were, I wasn't comparing the CaMs and the SAWs when I was talking about detailing. Wardah had mentioned wondering how Mattel could afford to sell the two-torso CaM sets at the same price as one regular doll, and I was pointing out how they are able to cut costs on the CaMs. If you weren't responding to me, oops :p

I'm still on the fence about the SAWs. I do like my 'zillaz, and fully intend to get more. But I really hate the overly colorful, half and half faces and bodies. One or two is cute, but it's overload for me on all of them. I'd be much more interested if there were more "normal" tones. Or even a few "all over" crazy colors. As it stands, they look more like they go to Clown Academy than to a school of fashion and witchcraft :p I do like that even the add-ons come with all the parts, and that all the sets come with enough clothing/wig/shoe options for everyone to be properly outfitted.

I'll be interested to see if they make tweaks to improve themselves, as opposed to only offering what their competitor didn't at the start. I'd love to see the SAW idea expanded on; imagine stickers coming with them so that you could give your witch a personalized tattoo! And maybe little "build-a pet", where you can assemble and personalize a familiar for your new character.

Thanks for posting photos angelfish!

wow 3 different types of body molds. What Mattel took years to do with MH, they did in one release. :P

Still not a big fan of the Picasso theme they got going. >,<;

Pretty easy to make that decision when someone's trail blazed the way! Also, I think there's a big difference between Skelita and Jinafire's torsos, and the "squint or miss" that the SAWs have.

I'm not a huge fan of the all two-toned thing they have going on. I almost bought the single pack yellow one, but the quality wasn't impressing me.

I don't get why some people are complaining about the price of the SaW sets when you can make 2 complete regular dolls that aren't even missing anything. I mean I know the CaMs are cheaper but I have always wondered how they can offer 2 dolls (at least once they started adding torsos) for less than what the individual dolls cost.

The detailing isn't nearly as intricate on the CaMs. And the wigs are cheap quality, and allow them to bypass the rooting and styling that the main dolls have. Also, the clothing tends to be cheaper quality, and they have zero accessories, jewelry, etc.

I used the classifieds back when I was collecting ponies, and while I don't sell much, I'd love to be able to browse for dolls there. The layout is a lot easier to utilize for that type of thing, as opposed to the sales thread.

If you are going to cosplay as a black character, please do not do what my idiotic ex-friend did. I was so embarrassed when I saw his costume at a convention 3 years ago. My ex-friend is white, but he did a "Black Face" Lewis from Left 4 Dead. He painted his face black and painted his lips bright red and extended the make up past his lips to look like he had big red lips. I am not black, but I was offended. It made me sick to my stomach.

I hope I didn't sound like I was condoning blackface!!!! I guess I consider the Wolf family to be brown-toned partially from being wolves. The majority of background werewolves are brown or gray; since a lot of werewolves in horror movies are brown-furred, I always thought that was the original inspiration. If I saw someone in brown makeup, with yellow eyes and wolf ears, I'd automatically think "werewolf", not "dated, mocking another race, and in poor taste". Of course, I'm not a POC, so maybe that train of thought is flawed. Apologies if I offended anyone!

Back on the topic of dolls, I am dying for that Scaris two-pack to show up. I'm positive it'll be Lagoona and Cleo. Aside from loving both of them, I also want my Scaris collection to be truly complete. I just received Catrine from one of my besties (and she had to hunt like mad for a good one), and tonight I picked up the cafe cart. I hope Mattel offers the pieces on their parts site; I need another one of those darling skull chairs!

Does the correct version have a different bàthing suit too? Or is that just what the owner of those dolls put her in?

There will be variations in her bathing suit because of the patterns in the fabric. I have two different GB Clawdeen bathing suits with varying patterns.
