Off Topic / Re: Any Care Bears collectors?

I'm off to Japan next March so I really hope they still sell Care Bear supplies and plushes there.  :)
There have been several exclusive characters released in Japan- Sweet Sakura, Trick Or Sweet, and a Christmas bear (white with a Christmas tree tummy symbol) so good luck finding them while you're there. :)

Does anyone have the five digit codes to know which pony translates to which number?  I see Strawberry Reef has them numbered 1-24 but I find it much easier to have the full number.  I'm sure it's been posted here previously but I can't find it.

Thanks in advance!

That was cute!!  Even though I love Starscream more than Rainbow Dash.  :P
That would definitely explain the Universal Greeting in your profile. ;)
It's one of my favorite movies ever! :D
Same here! :)

Since Pinkie Pie & Rainbow Dash were in the Fan Favorites set, I'd suggest two other ponies in their place.  For a rainbow themed set I'm thinking:

Red: Big Macintosh
Orange: Sparkleworks
Yellow: Fluttershy
Green: Minty
Blue: Waterfire
Purple: Razaroo

Not only do we get Minty, but we get an exclusive FIM show character too, which would also contribute to sales.

Okay-

if you are truly motivated to get Minty- I honestly think a more successful strategy would be to pester the Marts (Walmart, Target, K-Mart, TRU) to ORDER and/or request Minty.   Send emails, letters, ect. to corporate- preferably the buyer for girls toys if you can figure out who that person is... (difficult but not impossible- I often use Linked-in to find people I can't find on google)

Let me explain-  Hasbro doesn't get to decide what is in the stores-  Hasbro comes up with the ideas for toys-  has ponies made into marketing samples (prototypes really) -  and then they meet with buyers from the Marts- who order what they think will sell.   (Even Toyfair isn't just wandering around anymore- almost all orders are done through private appointment).

The fact that a slew of Minty ponies appeared on Taobao at some point almost certainly means that Hasbro they had a marketing sample run made- which means they probably pitched this pony (along with many others) to the Marts- and the pony was not picked up.

Anyway-  don't mean to come off as know-it-ally- but honestly would love to have Minty myself and was trying to attack the problem with an eye to how things really work....
Actually, from what I've heard from others in the toy industry, this is pretty much spot on, though I don't know if the toy manufacturers propose specific characters to the retailers (that may be a bit of a stretch).  Most retailers are looking for something fresh and exciting instead of 'oh, we're going to have Minty and Ploomette in the next assortment' which is what the collectors want to hear.  The blind bags are the 'fresh and new' and they seem to be selling well, hence why they keep shoving them at us as fast as we can buy them. ;)

Now that you've proposed pursuing the retail angle, I think we should have a course of action, and I recommend the following: pick one retailer to concentrate on and give them a reason to want this as an exclusive.  My suggestion would be to target Toys R Us as they seem to have a better idea of what collectors want (and because toys are pretty much their only business- they need to have something different from Walmart and Target if they want to survive).  Next up we need to have some sort of specific idea of what we want.  Yes, we obviously all want Minty.  But Toys R Us isn't going to be overly impressed with one exclusive brushable character.  They need something to make it worthwhile to them, and I think a set (similar to the Nightmare Moon Fan Favorites set) is in order.  So the question is which would be more popular- a set of six G3 inspired ponies or a set of Christmas themed ponies?  I'm leaning towards the latter (though I really don't want to wait a full year to get Minty!) but I know how popular Waterfire is and perhaps having two beloved previous generation characters could help the set's sales.

When dealing with retail stores it's best to have a firm idea of what you want to accomplish- rather than a number of individual emails or letters I suspect it would be better to have one well-organized attempt with solid backing.  We've got to sell this and make them want it as bad as we do.

I've watched this one more times than I care to admit.  Rainbow Dash superior, Starscream inferior.

Rainbow Dash, of course (my screen name should be a bit of a giveaway I suppose), but Minty has really climbed the charts recently and Rarity and Pinkie Pie are never that far behind either.

Pegasi.  I've noticed there haven't been a lot of them in the G4 toy line which is disappointing.  I guess the extra plastic for the wings adds to much to the cost?

Pony Corral / Re: Can you hold in your excitement...more of the main 6
« on: November 24, 2012, 04:37:38 PM »
There are ways to keep the main characters on the shelf while maintaining variety as well.  This is where Hasbro is failing.

Solution #1: Alternate waves so you have a wave of the Mane 6 followed by a wave of completely new characters.  Repeat.

Solution #2: Each wave should be comprised of half of the Mane 6 and three new characters, alternating the three Mane 6 in each time.

The second is the best option for keeping variety on the pegs but either option is better than an entire wave of the Mane 6 followed by a wave of four Mane 6 and two new characters, followed by two solid waves of Mane 6, followed by 4 new characters and two Mane 6...

On top of that, most of the playsets come with one of the Mane 6.  Sometimes they'll throw in an extra bonus pony to make the collectors scramble for the set because it adds some much needed variety to the line.

It's been said in this thread a few times already, but it bears repeating- kids only need one each of the Mane 6.  Once they have all six of them, what are their parents supposed to buy them next?  I noticed the Lulamoon/Heartstrings/Sunny Rays wave has been well-stocked lately (especially at K-Mart!) but I've seen them at Target also.  I suppose they expected a great deal of interest in two of those characters, because I've seen their wave far more times than I saw any of the previous waves show up.

A lot of us would like to see Minty.  I think a number of us would like to see a lot of previous generation ponies done in G4 style, and a bunch of new characters too.  I know I would.

I've considered branching out into G3s.  The prices are low, there's a lot of variety, and I feel confident I could build a decent-sized herd easily and on a budget.  The problem is there's so much variety, and they're a lot bigger than the ponies I started collecting, so they really don't fit into my collection as it currently stands.  It would be perfect (for me, anyways) to be able to walk into a store and buy a brand new G4 Minty, Wysteria, Starsong, Kimono, Thistle Whistle, etc.  I wouldn't mind adding some G4 style G1s like Firefly, Surprise, Ember, etc. to my herd either, but since those trademarks have supposedly expired I don't hold much hope of that happening.  But G3 is only a few years ago- these trademarks should still be valid (especially since we just saw the Walmart exclusive blind bag set with Waterfire among other G3s).  Even if they aren't, I really doubt that any other toy companies have snapped up names like Razaroo and Toola Roola so it would be a simple matter of renewing them.

There's a way to cater to kids and collectors alike- and Hasbro does a decent enough job catering to Transformers collectors while keeping the line fresh for kids too, so I don't see why they can't do the same for MLP too.

On a whim I decided to drive to a Walmart 45 minutes away after work tonight and I got the last one they had left (with some thanks to the lady stocking toys who led me straight to it after I couldn't find it on my own).  I know it was mentioned here a few times, but this set was not in with either the MLP toys (or the Christmas seasonal items).  In this case it was mixed in with the Barbies.

I also picked up the three Walmart issue plush while I was there.  Not really sure I like them yet but this may be the only official plush we get.  I'm really hoping that if these sell decently we'll get some G3 style plush.
