The Dollhouse / Anyone display dolls in acrylic boxes?
« on: September 25, 2013, 03:46:17 PM »
A thread in the pony coral made me curious because it was something I thought about this summer. I have never displayed any dolls in the plastic (acrylic) display boxes before this summer. I bought them for my childhood dolls, and some of them do have the leg spots that Barbies sometimes get. I live in California, and it can get very warm (90-100F) in summer. It made me wonder if being in the plastic display boxes with no air flow could effect the dolls in a negative way.

So how many people use them to display their dolls and any thoughts in regards to long term use?

I have a few special ponies, aka, my grails-- that I think I'd prefer in boxes.

I put them individually in some generic acrylic boxes, then I started to worry about them as if they weren't getting any airflow. So I drilled some holes into the boxes....

That's a good question about airflow. I have wondered/worried about that myself this last summer, but with my childhood Barbie dolls. I have never put them in acrylic display cases before and wondered what effects it could have (especially on my ones that have the plastic leg spots).

Anyone have any thoughts in regards to long term use on vintage ponies?

EEEEp look how pretty!!! From what I have heard the only difference between the D23 2 pack and the single dolls at the Disney Store is that Anna's skirt is Hemmed in the single pack while it is unhemmed in the D23 2 pack.

I could be wrong. But it is just what I have heard  They are beautiful either way.

No idea, I haven't opened them. I did look at the Disney Store ones when they were released, and to me the dolls look exactly the same. For me, that's kind of a bummer because they were being advertised as an "exclusive doll set" to the event,  so I'd say most were expecting a slight variation from what would be the standard release. Price wise, not much difference, they were $4 more than if they were bought now full price at the Disney Store, which is not a terrible amount. Call it a service charge for having them 2 months early I guess. But I bet all those people on ebay who bought them for the crazy amounts they were going for after the event are kicking themselves.

Oh and Ponyfan, I agree with you that Elsa reminds me a bit of Periwinkle. It's what I first thought of when I first saw her images after they were released.

Those dolls are lovely. I always liked Rose Petal Place, never had any of the dolls though, just a few books and a couple other things as a kid. I always find she is one of those "forgotten series" dolls/sets. Congratulations on getting such a nice bunch of them.

has anyone gotten the new Frozen dolls?? They look AMAZING!!!! I love everything about them. If you do photos would be awesome

I have both of them boxed together. I was at Disney's D23 Expo back in August and they released an exclusive doll set of Anna & Elsa at the event. I really like their different looks. Here is the picture of the two of them in their box.

I'm trying to think if Disney Store actually made any porcelain ones but I don't remember any. (Not that I would 100% know.)

A while back Brass Key was coming out with A LOT of Disney Princess dolls.

There are a lot of porcelain Disney dolls out there. Most of them are from other companies however there were some that were released in the Disney Store. There was a set of porcelain princess dolls (sold individually) that were "re-released" through the Disney Store. I say "re-released" because they were already available in other countries (I'm in the USA). They also didn't release all the ones that were previously sold. Ariel, for example, was excluded when they released them here.

I'd say Brass Key is the most likely doll from the thrift store, since they can be some of the most affordable (at original price) but you never know what gets donated. They were offered in many stores and there were a number of different princess versions. It's also possible that they may have mixed outfits, I know of at least one Belle doll with a red cloak, but she had a pink dress. So they may have re-dressed it (of course it may just be a different doll altogether).

The Dollhouse / Re: Was their ever a disney doll of princess elionwy?
« on: September 12, 2013, 12:38:10 AM »
To my knowledge, there is not an official "Eilonwy" doll. There are people who have made custom ones from other dolls and these are the ones you find on Google. I know that there are a few official Disney pins of her though and a "Magic Memories Figurines" group from the film that has her in it.

There is very little Black Cauldron merchandise in general. While the movie did poorly, I think that the lack of merchandise originally has more to do with when the movie came out. The "Black Cauldron" was released in 1985, so early on in some ways of all the great toy marketing pushes that came later on. We get so used to them in today's world, that we forget that it didn't used to be like that every time a film was made. Now the lack of merchandise in later years (other than a few pins) is more than likely because of the lack of interest and perception. It did eventually get a VHS release FINALLY in 1998, and then the 25th anniversary edition on DVD in 2010.

From what I have been shown/told, Elsa will be crowned queen early on in the film.

In regards to the number of "actual" princesses, that always gets to be a fun little debate because it always depends on who is doing the counting.

Officially, it's Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel and Merida.

But then the little issues arise in debates, such as then why "Princess Kida" is not recognized officially as one since she technically is. Guess when they started counting over there at the company they forgot her.

And then there is the debate over Mulan, how she fits in to the "princess" line up.

Ultimately, the "official" count will always come via the company on who they decide to toss into that "official" group, despite what any actual movie rolls are.

Does anyone know when Disney started to market Ariel more as a human than a mermaid? I've seen a lot of things with Ariel in a green dress and less items of her as a mermaid.

Ponyfan

Yes actually, I can answer that. As someone with an enormous Ariel collection that spans over 20 years, I can say that overall Ariel has typically been marketed as a mermaid with a small amount of merchandise across the years that depicts her in her human form. While over the more recent years there was getting to be a little more of her in human form here and there, the big change happened in 2012. In the late summer/early fall of 2012 the princesses were redesigned with all new looks (some of you may recall the Cinderella redesign change, most noticeably her hair) and at this time is when Ariel started being marketed on merchandise wearing a green dress.

For those of you who may not be aware of it, this change over for the princesses is not limited to merchandise alone. They are blending the character design brand with the park character identity. So slowly over time, each park princess is getting redesigned to match the new branding. It has already occurred with Cinderella, Belle, and Aurora as all three of them have received new looks in the parks. Ariel in the parks has been depicted off and on over the years as both forms. Traditionally as a mermaid, but she has also been represented in human form wearing various green dresses for various parades and also for meet & greet situations.

The dark haired doll in the third pic down is stunning

I agree. You called her "Brooke", what make/maker/type of doll is she?

Some early 80's Barbie dolls also have those same kind of brushes as in your pic 1, which makes sense since She-ra was made by Mattel. My earliest Barbies from the 80's have those style brushes.

The blue locket in pic2 is from "Perfume Pretty Whitney Doll" (friend to Barbie).

The 4th blue comb from the left is from "Teen Looks Cheerleader Jazzie" (cousin to Barbie) I have this doll, but I think that same comb also came with some other Jazzie dolls as well.

I know I have seen that purple comb, the 6th one from the left, but I just can't think of who it belongs to.

Were you able to get everything you wanted?  I heard it was pure chaos at times and so many people left disappointed.  Also, seems like there were tons of scalpers there.  Some walking away with 10 of the limited Gold Snow and Prince set to sell on ebay.  I think Disney needs a better 1 per person check point based on an individual's D23 ticket id.

The line to get in to the disney store section was very long, that was true, but it was organized and they only let so many people in once so many went out. It really was more of a choice of "Do you want to wait in the line for a couple hours?" and that all comes down to personal choices. There were a number of exclusives being released each day for a variety of different collections.

I can honestly say that I don't know what went on with those Snow White dolls. I can tell you that I personally did not see anyone in line during the rest of the convention with more than one in their bags, and I saw quite a few single ones in various bags because I was wanting the reusable Ariel tote bag that was a free gift with purchase. So every time I saw one while we were waiting in line I couldn't help but look at the beautiful Ariel bag, and hence why I noticed the Snow White dolls, as they are very large boxes.

I can tell you however, that for the Frozen doll set, we were wrist banded coming in the door of the convention. If you wanted the doll set, you had to get a wrist band, and only were allowed to purchase one per wrist band, and only to those people who had the wristband. The doll sets were kept behind the registers.

I'm still confused about Anna's hair color.  She looks more like a dirty blonde in the movie frames but her dolls give her really red hair.  Almost Merida red.

From the clips they showed us, the movie looks like it will be very good, and I can't wait for it to come out in theaters.

I think Anna's hair color is somewhere in between blonde and red, somewhere in that sort of strawberry blonde or even a slight auburn range. Even in the various concept art and film clips they showed us at one of the seminars the colors were inconsistent between everything (sometimes blonde and some a slight red) but that can be fairly normal in concept art and finished product. Here is a picture of Anna and Elsa that was a large display board at the convention.

I really want the note cards!

I LOVE the drawn versions. The note cards were one of the few items available for purchase, so I was lucky enough to buy a set. I bought the note cards from the first release of the Designer dolls as well two years ago. The dolls are absolutely stunning in person.

Oh and I forgot to mention when I posted the topic, they also will be releasing a nail polish set (1 set for the entire collection), clothing, jewelry and possibly a bag/purse. I asked one of the managers at the event if they would have the same merchandise for every princess in the set, and they said they were hopeful but not sure if each release would contain similar merchandise.
