G4 is dead to me
Couldn't agree more. There's no toys at the booth we haven't seen yet. It feels like even with these new designs, Hasbro is desperately trying to keep G4 relevant, with all the products trying to rely on outdated memes and what's trendy at the moment (The "bestie!" description of that kissing Celestia toy and the "om nom nom" Dash pillow are the worst offenders here). MLP really needs to start anew instead of increasingly milking and dumbing down the generation that has lasted an entire decade at this point.

I always thought Sparkle ponies with twinkle eyes would be cool! Add tinsel hair and a jewel symbol, and you get the sparkliest pony ever!
So Soft G1 babies would be darling!
Scented twice as fancy ponies would be nice too, especially a berry-scented Sugarberry or candy scented Yum Yum.
Not quite a gimmick, but unicorn and pegasus Big Brothers!
If I combined gimmicks to create the worst pony ever... Sweet Talkin', Drink N' Wet, BBE ponies that have those weird floral tattoos from the Ponymania set all over them. In addition to their scary doll eyes, they also have the "silly face" gimmick like that one Pinkie and Dash. They're oddly jointed like those articulated G4's they made, and they're also Dance N' Prances-as they spin around, they wet themselves!

Do plushies count? I love the Build-A-Bear ones! They're adorable and pretty darn accurate, just the right size for hugging, and there's a huge variety of characters in the line-up!

Following up on the G1 thread I created a while ago, who's your favorite G3 pony from every year (2003-2008), and why?
Mine are:
2003: Autumn Skye Autumn's my favorite season, and she captures its essence very well. Her grayish blue coat is very unique and blends well with her fall colored hair. Even her name is quite pretty.
2004: Desert Rose Even though white/pink was overused in this generation, Rose's faint colors are quite dainty and elegant. The glitter, her detailed rose symbol, and the way its green stem matches her eyes make her quite sophisticated looking.
2005: Love Wishes One of my favorite ponies in my childhood herd, her dark indigo and neon red color combo is stunning and unique.
2006: Pumpkin Tart Is there anything cuter than a pony dressed up like a cat?
2007: Aurora Mist Everything about this pony is just gorgeous. She's a pegasus with a cascading symbol AND a jewel, and she's a beautiful shade of periwinkle with pearly blue wings and lovely pastel hair. She looks just like a fresh ocean breeze.
2008: Sweetie Belle I'm not a fan of any of the Core 7, but Sweetie's my favorite due to being one of only 8 G3 unicorns, and being the only completely new character in the bunch (Even Starsong reuses Silver Glow's cutie mark).

I had her as a kid. Out of the many white G3's with pink hair, I think she's my favorite.

I love white ponies with deep red hair, but I really dislike the "kissy lips" pose she has.

I love her color scheme and cutie mark, but I never liked the Donkey Pose.

Even from just these stock photos, the paint jobs look awful. The hair colors and cutie marks are much less detailed than the FIM blind bags.
Also the boxart...yuck! There is no semblance of a muzzle on those "ponies" from any angle anymore!

I'm thinking Taffy on this one. While Skippity's also underappreciated, I remember she exists thanks to her silly name and rare rearing pose. Taffy, on the other hand, is one I always forget about, even though she's certainly cute. She has the pink and white color scheme that was quite ubiquitous even at that point, and has the misfortune of standing in the shadow of another pink and white, candy themed pony, Yum Yum.

at its core, My Little Pony is all about the sweet parts in life, colorful ponies, rainbows, and other simple happy things
I would say that accurately describes G3, but definitely not G1. (Incidentally the G3 specials were very poorly received, initially, by people who were already collecting MLPs at the time. Basically due to G3 being as you described.)
Sorry if that wasn't clear, I meant from an advertising standpoint, as the G1 commercials had a gentle, whimsical tone to them despite the surprising darkness of the show, the rainbows and grassy meadows are part of the general MLP aesthetic in one form or another for most generations. What I was basically saying is that they're ditching the toyline's cute, feel good charm in favor of a "we're edgy and controversial" stance, by using a word that, while not the most explicit, feels out of place in a franchise aimed at young kids. Even when G4 used pop music to advertise, like in the old "Equestria Girls" Hub promo, they changed the lyrics to fit the pony world, and the result was clever and memorable. Ironically, in the same ad where they're trying to be sassy and "mature", the concept feels more dumbed down, albeit in a different way than G3.5.

She's tied with Glory as my all time favorite G1. Her colors are beautiful and unusual, and I love ponies with nighttime themed symbols!

I know this is late, but seeing as I got back into my pony obsession right after seeing this news, I feel I need to finally weigh in.
If you think this looks promising, that's totally fine, I'm glad you're able to see a glimmer of hope in this. But I feel like this is a disrespect to not only FIM, but My Little Pony as an entire franchise. There doesn't look to be anything original about this, the toys look like everything marketed to girls in recent years, the show seems to be riding on TTG and Thundercats Roar. The "ponies" are bipedal and almost flat-faced, and lack any of the charming innocence that even G4 and 3.5 had. But what's really making me upset is that a lot of people, especially on the big FIM sites, are getting defensive over people being "butthurt over a little girl's show". But that's the problem. The reason why this concept annoys me is that there seems to be no respect for the target audience. This is coming right after FIM, where, no matter your opinions on the actual show, it's clear that, at least at the beginning, the creators sought to create something cute, funny, and surprising intelligent for kids to enjoy, and a lot of its runaway success came from that. Pony Life seems to be hammering in that silly faces and screaming are all that's needed to keep kids entertained. By saying "It's just a little girl's show", people are implying that little girls don't need quality entertainment. I was a little girl once, so I know they definitely do. G3 was my childhood, and even though the stories might not have been the strongest, there was still a lot of pretty designs and sweet songs, and I loved all the pretty ponies and knew each one of them by name. FIM was my life in middle school and part of high school, due to its lighthearted but surprisingly smart stories and wide world of characters. My Little Pony has always been an important part of my life, and it saddens me to see it turned into an ugly, trying to hard to be cool, joke.
And also, Good As Hell? Really? I'm not one to complain about people swearing, but this is My Little Pony! Dark adventures and snarky humor can have its place in the franchise, as G1 and G4 have shown, but at its core, My Little Pony is all about the sweet parts in life, colorful ponies, rainbows, and other simple happy things, not saying "hell" every 5 seconds. My parents were on board with my childhood pony obsession because of their cuteness, but if they saw this trailer, I know they wouldn't allow me to watch the show. It just seems trashy and disrespectful to the MLP brand.
Sorry for this rant, I'm just upset that they're ruining the image of such an important brand that means a lot to kids and adults alike.

I'm not a fan of the super-gimmicky ones from the later years of G1, like the Dance N' Prance, Ballerinas, Happy Tails, Sweet Talkin' or Sippin' Sodas. I'm also not fond of a lot of the baby gimmicks, especially BBE's and Drink N' Wets. I appreciate the Rockin' Beats for their ridiculous 80's-ness, but the one in that set I really don't like is Sweet Notes. Her symbols remind me of amoebae!
