Pony Corral / Re: Insuring your Collection?
« on: August 02, 2012, 03:19:52 PM »
I never knew such a thing as a toy specialty insurer even existed.  I'll have to look into that.  It seems that first, though, it would behoove me to make a complete and accurate accounting of my collection.

Anyone else have any first-hand experience with this?

One of my friends has the most incredible Barbie collection - she has whole rooms dedicated to her collection and I cant even imagine the value - she lives in Maine so I asked her who she used, as I have no doubt she has had to insure her collection - here is where she mentioned - http://www.americancollectors.com - she says the can be expensive [as most specialist insurers are] but they are specialist enough to be comfortable ensuring most "collectable" items

Thank you for the referral!  :)

You must have the *best* mail days!     So many happy, happy, happy finds.

Could we all work on consolidating our question answers into our first post?  With the thread getting so long, it is becoming hard to sift through and find answers :)
I've done my best.  My answers, or those I found, are all on page 6.

I dreamed that I'd never been assigned as someone's partner.  It was even worse than that reoccurring dream where I find all the G1s in a thrift store but don't have a cart, a basket, or any reliable way to carry them to the register.  ;)  (Ponies, literally slipping through my fingers.)

Dear partner--I hope you exist.   ^.^

As for *my* person--I've got to start deciding where to draw the line.  I'm already past the $35 but I keep finding ponies on their list and thinking "Oh!  Must include!".     I may start some test-packing with a reasonable sized box to see what would fit and how many more baby ponies I can edge in there.  :D

Blind Bags?
Sure, I'd be happy with blind bag ponies.  The only three I have, currently, are the glittery Wave 1 three--Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash.  I bought a bunch more for my son, who loves MLP, and stuffed them into his egg hunt eggs--but didn't get any for myself!  :p

I actually have a powerpoint slideshow of my entire collection that I put on a thumb drive and gave to my mom just in case something happens at my house.

That's a really smart idea.  I hadn't considered something like a digital copy.  (I'm slow-tech).  :)

Anybody here have an insured collection, outside of what your homeowner insurance covers automatically?  Any comments, thoughts, suggestions, or experiences?

Or, worse, has anyone lost a collection and gone through the process of having insurance cover (or not cover) the loss?

I'd like to address this as both a collector *and* a mom.

Obviously, as a collector, my house is filled with My Little Pony.  Everyday they arrive in the mail, they spend some time galloping across my desk, and they are on shelves and in bins and boxes.  My son, now four and a half, loves them.  He has ponies in his room to play with and has always been respectful of them.  He's not going to give anybody a hair cut or toss them into a toy box filled with uncapped markers.  Sure, their hair will need to be restyled at some point, but in the meantime he's loving them the way I did at his age.  My collection is about nostalgia and those recaptured days of being a child enraptured with a children's toy line.  Why wouldn't I want him to experience what made my childhood so magic-filled, too?

To everyone afraid of children gnawing on the toys--not many toddlers do that.  If we were talking about babies, okay, but we're talking about children capable of speech and walking and reason.  Surely a parent knows their child best and can judge if something is safe for them to have.  As an avid thrifter, most of my son's toys are vintage.  I've had to consider safety and suitability issues for him from day one.  Are collectors rolling over in graves everywhere when he props open the lid of his toy box and goes rooting through Care Bears, She-Ra dolls, and ye olde wooden toys to find Cringer to ride through a magical world he has created on the floor of his play room?  I'd hope not.

I might be in the minority here, but I think that My Little Pony was made for children and are still the best play toys around.  While I wouldn't personally let anyone 'play' with some of my rarer mail orders or international ponies, I make it a point to invite my son's friends over and to leave boxes of more common ponies in average condition and Paradise Estate out for them to play with.  Many of them are familiar with FiM and their eyes light up, like Christmas morning, when they see the lovable, approachable faces of my G1s.  Those moments, I think, are what My Little Pony were made for.

Before I was a collector, I was a child--and I loved my ponies more fiercely and faithfully than anyone, of any age, ever could.

Not knowing who my partner is--I dare not skip any of these questions!  :D

T-Shirts:  I'm tall, so I tend to go for unisex L t-shirts to make sure they're long enough.  In a more fitted, junior's size, I don't know--maybe an XL?

FiM Trading Cards:  I have been collecting them, but by the time this swap is over, I expect to have them all.  I'm a total sucker for trading cards, stickers, pamphlets--anything small I can collect every single one of.  :p

I'm no fan of fakies.  Sorry.

I love backcards.

I'm open to special-needs ponies--smells, initials, flaws--I'm ready to love and take care of whoever you send.  :)

Pony Corral / Insuring your Collection?
« on: July 30, 2012, 05:05:26 PM »
In general, I'm an adult.  I have two children.  I pay my taxes.  I make sure my vehicle registration is up-to-date.  I buy multi-vitamins.  I even have a life insurance policy.  What I haven't given enough thought to, however, is insuring my MLP collection.  In the case of some catastrophic loss--fire, tornado, or pony-wise thieves--my ponies would only be replaced insofar as my homeowner's insurance would cover general household losses.  Should I have it insured separately?  How much does a collection (of any sort) need to be worth before it makes sense to go to the trouble (and additional expense) to have it insured?

Have you?

If so, how did you establish the value/have your collection appraised?  Do you keep records of your collection, photos or lists or something, in a safe place outside your home?  I'm afraid to admit that I don't.  Sure, I have some photos of some things on Flickr but the bulk of my collection, and record of it even existing, would disappear if my house did.

Any experience or thoughts would be appreciated.  I don't even know what questions I should be asking.  :D

Pony Brag Arena / Re: Your Pony Rooms!

My Pony Room has been called into duty this past year as a baby's room.  Soon, though, I'll reclaim the space and when I do--white IKEA cabinetry it is!  I love the finished look it gives a room, having everything built in, and I love, love, love the pegboard for MOCs.  That's what I've needed all along and never realized it.  :)

Thanks for all the inspiration, ladies!  :)

For Trade / Re: MLP Arena Enterplay FiM Trading Card Trading Thread!
« on: July 30, 2012, 01:23:00 PM »
I've updated my extras list (on page 1) and only need a few more cards.  Can anyone help me find these?  I'm ready to buy, trade, compose a sonnet, anything at all to find these last few cards.  :D  Likewise, if I have any cards you need for your collection--let's work out a deal!  I'd rather give them away than have them sit here unused.  :)

I am dying to find:
#60--Nightmare Night Indeed.

Foils
F1--Applejack:  Element of Honesty
F19--Rarity
F24--Apple Bloom
F28--Cheerilee

& All Special Gold Foils

Well, I've been shopping around.  I've gotten three ponies through various means from my swap partner's list as well as some non-pony items they wanted as well.  I have some more things in my sale pony bins for them, too, but I need to dig around for them and double-check condition.  I think I'll have gone well over the swap price guide but frankly, I'm having too much fun to rein it in.  :D

And now, to attempt to catch up on questions!  You darling, chatty, inquisitive people, you!  ;)

If a SS is in your wish list would you prefer it flocked or deflocked?
Yes.  ;)  I love well-flocked ponies as well as deflocking as a cure for mangey ponies.  :D

What are your favorite fruits in drinks?
Whaaat?   :P  Um.  Lemon, lime, orange, strawberry, and apple.  But I like real fruit--not fruit flavorings--so I can't imagine you sending a smoothie or a juice through the post.  :D

Do you mind if I send extras that relate to my local area?
Not a bit!  That'd be fun.  Particularly if you live in Scotland or Ireland--where I have family ties.  But yes, I'd love to learn more about you and where you live.  :)

Would you be happy to have pony accessories as part of your "extras" or would you prefer "extras" as fun items and any pony accessories your partner purchases simply included as part of your pony allocation?
I'm having deja vu.  Did I already answer this?  I would love pony accessories extras.  The more MLP, the merrier!  But, I'd also like to give you free rein to gift me with whatever you'd like.  I am not a picky partner, or an ungrateful one, I'll be so excited to open the box no matter what you send.  :)

If your package is has a theme would you prefer a generic theme? (say something shiny or colorful or floral ect) or would a holiday type of package be alright (birthday or something)?
I trust your muse.  Go with whatever!  :D

And pony armies?
I don't have any pony armies.  I love boy ponies and would never, ever, ever turn one away no matter what condition they're in--but that's not quite the same as intentionally building an army.  :D

I love Clipper and Lucky.  That is my favorite mold Hasbro ever created.

That said, my least favorite is the Birthflower ponies.  By making them all virtually identical, Hasbro took the cheap and easy way out.  And by picking white ponies that turn various shades of yellow, ecru, beige, ivory, and everything-but-white, they end up looking pretty gross on top of everything!
