Customs / Antique Moondancer and ATC for RevRuby
« on: June 21, 2012, 01:20:46 PM »
This gal has been in my head for awhile, ever since RevRuby told me Moondancer was her favorite pony. Lots of people have their own style to alter original ponies like glam, dread, steampunk, etc. I decided to try my hand at an Antique style pony.

I started with a white unicorn bait and dyed her to get that aged look. I did a slight gradient on the feet. I rehaired her with Saran hair that I dyed as well. I did straw curls and to get them to stay I sprayed a bit of mod podge watered down a lot. I wanted limp curls to go with that antique feel. I styled the hair using hair pins that I painted an off while pearly color though the pearl didn't come out as strong as I had hoped.  I painted her largely with Testor's acrylics and a bit of pigments over the red stars to make them look a little aged. I originally wanted to do crackle on the symbol but it didn't want to work out with such small designs so I went with metallic instead. I am really happy with how she turned out and I'm glad Rev likes her.

I also made an ATC at the spur of the moment. The pony stamp is from a Stampin' Up set that a friend of mine got me.

Here are the pics!

2.body color - White or pale purple
3.eyes color - Gold
4.colors for her clothes - red and white or red and black

How about trying for a more korean style dress like here: http://mauismahname.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/hanbok04331.jpg

Customs / Re: Acetate hair????

I like acetate hair. It makes me think of cross stitch threat that has been unraveled and used as hair, only more shiney. I have a custom that I will eventually redo that has been rehaired in black.

Customs / Re: Matte sealer?
« on: June 14, 2012, 03:33:38 PM »
mine was actually some sort of odd model paint we found in a model store. Cheap little glass bottle of acrylic matte. It worked fine for my first two, but I guess it got aged. I know it was annoying with some colors.

I will be ordering matte online very soon, so I wanted to make sure I knew which one was best.

http://www.amazon.com/Ceramcoat-Protect-Interior-Varnish-8oz-Matte/dp/B000XZTE36/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT1_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3Q96UGQQM5IN2&coliid=IF04UOJ6I27P2

I'm going to assume this is bad for ponies? I'm not very good with sealing things.

I use ceram coat gloss, but the matte isn't really a true matte unfortunately. It's more of a satin finish. I don't generally use it to seal full body customs. I do use mod podge, but I think I'm gonna try some of the testors or maybe something from Gamesworkshop. I have problems with trying to paint over Mod podge if I need to fix something, it has a tendency to peal if you try to paint over it. I think it's because it's water based and not a permanent finish.

I'm not sure you can overdo it with a zombie custom, the grosser the better I guess.

thank you everyone! :D i feared this one would be so bad, i wouldn´t get positive response. XD
i thought about starting a raffle soon, where you can win a custom like that too. ^^
than you for your support!

It's always funny when the positive response is gross and disgusting ;P

That is unbelievably grotesque, well done.

With anything the price is what people are willing to pay for it, not what the creator thinks it is worth. If people have the money and are willing to pay a premium they will.

That being said, even top customziers like Woosie, Darkhorse, Lovelauraland, and ManaMaiden don't often sell customs for over $300. Sometimes they do, but generally it seems to be in the $100 to $200 range. I don't think anyone here would gainsay those prices because of the level of work they do and the demand by the consumer.

That's not to say the quality of your current custom is any less than these artists, but this market still depends more on what the consumer is willing to buy.

I don't think $50 would be unreasonable for your latest creation, but I still think it might be hard to sell it for that right now. RevRuby recently made a gorgeous custom that she tried to sell for that price (totally worth the price I feel), but no one actually bought it. In the end she made more money doing a raffle as people generally have 5-10 dollars to spend as opposed to dropping $50 on a custom.

Personally, it might be worth trying to do a raffle as you will probably get more than selling it outright.

She really is gorgeous. I love the hair, it makes her seem all high and mighty!

Customs / Re: How do you rehair a FBR without ruining it?
« on: June 06, 2012, 01:38:21 PM »
I used to have major problems with cracking around the holes before I started thinning my paint with acrylic paint thinner as opposed to water. Water weakens the bonds between the paint molecules making it more likely to crack and peel. I still get a little bit of damage occasionally from my tool, but nothing a little touch up doesn't fix.

Here's a pair of ponies I created after one of my favorite webcomics "Something Positive" One side features the shortened logo and the other side features one of the main characters: Choo Choo Bear the boneless hairless cat.

I've had to start all over again before. It rather sucks. Sometimes you gotta do it if the job just hasn't turned out well. In the end it can be better to suffer through the pain of repainting than to look at the custom and see all of the flaws. I'm OCD like that.
