Customs / Re: Hunger Games - Mockingjay custom pony
« on: June 04, 2020, 04:41:00 PM »
Hey thanks everyone - I found it quite stressful making a custom for a paying customer!! Back to creating whatever I feel like now and halfway through another custom already!

And the sculpted symbol looks amazing - how did you make the ring so perfect? If you don't mind revealing your secrets! :P

LOL thanks Griffin - to be honest I raided the tools that came with my son's play-doh set  Tools for sculpting can be found almost anywhere!

32
Griffin that is some great sculpting! Glad you left her as blue, the colours work so perfectly together. Love her!!

Wow - the striped effect is perfect! Damnit I want an airbrush lol.

Great work painting the eyes too. Can't wait to see her finished! Where are you ordering hair from in Australia?

They are awesome!!! Love the bones, particularly the skulls, they look so realistic. Unreal concept too! The moss is perfect on them.

Customs / Hunger Games - Mockingjay custom pony
« on: May 24, 2020, 09:42:56 PM »
First paid commission pony is finally complete!! I take long enough to complete a standard custom - creating a commission apparently takes me at least 12 weeks, gah.

I was given the vague idea of a Hunger Games custom with a forest theme and features the Mockingjay symbol from the Hunger Games series and this is end result...

This G1 bride pony was rehaired in numerous shades of greens and browns, her hair was curled and styled. Eyes hand painted and varnished. Mockingjay symbol, trees and leaves sculpted from polymer clay, dusted with mica powder and varnished. Hope the customer is happy with her!

Impossible to choose a favourite out of all of these ponies! Might need to actually try a full body repaint in the future as those black ponies look unbelievable, particularly the black and silver ones by Einhornbaby... *drool*

BlackCurtains, your first two red ponies are EPIC! Total admiration for all the additions and sculpted details.

Glitter ponies look amazing when they're dyed and this boy is no exception! He turned out awesome, and I really love the crown. Hair is perfect for him.

That mushroom pony is so cool!  You sculpted all those tiny little mushrooms!?!  :drunk:

Haha yeah I did, sculpting is my favourite part of customising! I'm not a strong painter so I always sculpt additions to my ponies, unlike your awesome painting skills SunPony! Doc Hudson looks unreal on your pony!! I wish I could paint half as well as you guys!

Ponybookworm your body repaints are great! I'm too scared of paint to even attempt a body repaint, always just make do with the original pony colour..

BlackCurtains your Sushi pony is super cute... Did you sculpt the sushi yourself? Polymer clay?

Love seeing all the different colours on these threads! I'm *almost* finished my first paid commission, cannot wait to share her with you guys when she's done..

So many awesome ponies in this thread!! I'm not much of a bright or yellow person LOL but surprised to dig through the archives and find that I have knocked over a few yellowish customs!

Colorscaprseart, I love your Rainbow Bubbles, the colours pop out so well... I've found another artist to be envious of, your painting skills are great!

Roogna I cannot get over the wings on Flutterguy! Need to give sculpting proper wings a go one day, what do you use to sculpt with out of curiosity?

Griffin, as per usual your ponies are brilliant! The painting on August Reverie is drool-worthy!

You guys probably remember one of my latest, the Mushroom Pony... She's almost yellow?

This Autumn one was part of a set of the four seasons, completed probably 5 years ago.

And my first corset pony, made around 7 years ago... I cringe when I look at the eye painting I was doing back then!!

Personally I would do anything to avoid using glue inside my ponies but that's just me. I have always used a similar method to the dental floss, except I use thin pieces of wire folded in half. Just shove the wire straight through the hole, thread the hunk of hair and yank the wire back out with pliers. Might be a little time consuming but it's secure and avoids the need for messy glue.

I also often use a large sewing needle to stretch the plugs before putting the wire through, recently got a new set of clay sculpting tools and one of the tools is appropriate for poking holes. Don't focus too much on having 'the right' tools for the job, it's largely just making do with what is available

Aww thanks!  :-* I'm not usually this quick! Indeed I would've preferred to allow the paint dry for a bit longer. And anyone who has ever traded with me knows I take my time with swaps   Especially if the customs involve sculpting. (I have one trade in progress right now - since several months already - which I would prefer to complete before committing too any new ones... but I'm definitely up for a trade at some point, do remind me!)

Absolutely we will have to organise a trade when we both have the time, I love your ponies! I'm in the process of completing my first paid commission and it's taking me forever lol but I'll hopefully have some time later this year.. It's a relief to hear that you don't usually finish a pony in a matter of hours! :satisfied:

Griffin, she's beautiful!! Your painting skills ate out of this world, I can't believe she only took you a few hours to complete! I would love to do a trade with you one day but I'm afraid I'd take far too long to finish lol..

Awesome work, I love her!

Sadly I think if painting such tiny details were easy, everyone would do it!

Practice and patience. I've been making customs for years and still struggle with eye painting - one slip and you can ruin hours of work. Holding your breath while you paint can help keep a steady hand but otherwise it all comes down to practice I believe.
