Pony Corral / Re: New WeLoveFine chibi design poll is up!

Anyone else surprised they changed the Rainbow Dash design? In their previous poll I think she was in a much cuter pose. I would have voted for that one for sure! That said, I prefer the new Octavia with her cello.

It was a very close poll! Perhaps they will release them all. I'm glad the Lyra one won, she's very cute, and I'm a sucker for green ponies.

We Love Fine put up a new poll to vote on designs for the next set of chibi ponies! The voting ends on January 19 2016, and since I didn't see a topic about it here, I thought I'd spread the word. They're cute!

You can vote here!

Pony Corral / Re: Do you style "authentically"?
« on: January 11, 2016, 11:32:12 PM »
I am weirdly OCD about original curl on g1s. If I get a pony who has it, I try to make sure it stays! And I do have a bunch of ponies who could use some hair style restoration, so I like to look at lots of MIB photos. I want to get those big foam curlers so I can give some of the ponies the big swoopy single curl, like what Fizzy came with.

If a pony came to me in need of a bath, and looks to have original curls, I do wash her in cold water and try to sort of...feel and watch the hair for signs of how it wants to curl. Plastic has a memory! I've gotten some interesting styles just paying attention to what the plastic is already doing.

On the other hand with straight haired ponies this is less the case, and a couple have the odd braid  or two. Especially my Brush and Grow, she has tons of braids!

I've had mine since I was a kid! I like to think the Dazzle Glows are ghost ponies, or maybe aliens or some kind of celestial being. I have the blue hearts version, just because of the luck of the draw at the local toy store when I was little!

Those are cute! Do you have a link to where one could order some?

I'd love to see how it turns out! It looks like Pearl Ex can be mixed right into clear paint and painted or air brushed on. You might want to try interference colors, I know they show up on black surfaces and since the plastic of the twinkle eye's eyes is already a color that might give you an interesting effect.  Here is an FAQ about the product: https://www.softexpressions.com/help/faq/FAQPearlEx.php#sur

I've never tried it in this application, but what about Pearl-Ex? They're shiny powdered pigments. You might have to mix a few to get the right look, and I recomend testing it with a few different adhesives on something made from a similar type of plastic as the eyes. I would use a very thin coating of whatever adhesive you use.  If you use spray adhesive, cover everything you don't want to glue and hold the can far away from the pony.

Beachball is probably my favorite G1, for tottally nostalgic reasons - she was the first pony I got as a kid! Since you mentioned wanting to clean her, I wanted to share some advice. Apparently the chemical that makes the hair on Sunshine ponies change color washes out easily with soap, shampoo or detergent, and it's better to clean these ponies with just conditioner. Thenewgreymare on Tumblr has an even more detailed post about it. Hope this helps, and congrats on Beachball! http://thenewgraymare.tumblr.com/post/133228944746/beach-ball-restoration-gallery-of-restorations

Those are adorable! I like the Funkos and especially the Hikaris, it just bugs me that $80 is the going rate for a g4 pony that's sculpted to look like the character and in an interesting pose these days.

It's really nice to see them out of box and in the sun! Congrats on your ponies.

Oooh, could you make collar pins with chains? That would be really ellegant. I especially like the first g1 style, the Firefly looking ones!

As to cost, please remember to factor in your time and materials, or you'll come up at a loss and have to stop making them. $5 for your smallest piece sounds nice, but resin is pricey, making molds and casts takes time, and the materials for molds are not cheap. To be efficient, you probably need multiple molds of each shape, and to replace molds as they get warped by repeated use. Its hard to imagine it could be produced for so little.

Here is an article on how people price their crafts. It includes a formula. Don't undersell yourself! You don't have access to mass production facilities, and creative people often undervalue their work.

http://www.craftprofessional.com/craft-pricing-formula.html

Etsy has a similar article: https://blog.etsy.com/en/2012/a-simple-formula-for-pricing-your-work/

They both cite the same formula. Good luck! Etsy seems like a good place to sell, and if I saw these at a pony or brony convention I would certainly walk away with a pair.

Pony Corral / Re: Share your grubbiest ponies!

Aw, poor pre-restore cupcake just wanted to get dressed up and listen to some Morrisey in a goth club! What dramatic eyeshadow.

The restoration is lovely, of course.

But it makes me wonder: does anyone ever get a slightly less grubby but still messed up pony, say with a haircut, and leave it as it is due to weird respect for a sort of original owner's artistic intent? I find myself wanting to do this sometimes.

No, in all honesty you could do Wigeam's  with a two part mold. Basically it would have a piece of clay in a skate ramp/U shape with high walls, the headdress imbedded halfway into the clay, mark out some indentations in the clay as registration points, and then you pour the first half of the mold in silicone. After that, remove the clay from the other side, leave the headdress in place, spray a little mold release, rebuild the walls, and pour silicone again. The only issue is that resin, the material the headdress would be cast in, can be stiff, but I think there are additives that can make it more flexible.  Or, you could build up the layer of clay under the hat first, which might help it keep its shape in the mold. In any case I think it could be done!

I do like to think about this stuff, if I had any boy pony hats I would be experimenting!

$20-$25 sounds like what I would like to pay for these too, but since I have worked with silicone moldmaking, I do understand that it can be a labour intensive and expensive process! Do you feel a price like that would cover your material and time costs?

I love the shells and hope you make some plain clam ones too, and maybe even baby sea pony floats! And I want to ask nosey mold questions, like did you seperate the halves of the shell and make two molds, or did you mold the whole thing in one piece? Can't wait to see these up for sale.
