A: Unicorn molds. I very rarely like the look of sculpted horns; the proportions are never quite right and they tend not to blend as cleanly as I like with the head. (There are plenty of customizers who use that as a design feature, and do it really impressively, but for 'normal' horns it doesn't work for me.) I do, however, have one unicorn I made back before G3 unicorns existed, and that horn I made with air-dry clay (I think it was Paperclay, but it was a long time ago), adhered with mechanics' glue, and painted over as part of the pony's FBR. Q: Brag time! What aspect or style of your customs do you look at and think, "Lots of people do x, but mine is the best (or one of the best, if you prefer)"? -Tabby the princess with claws

A: I have no secrets, and I wouldn't be active in the community (although granted I'm not all that active!) if I didn't want to share. Knowledge, like love, grows best when shared freely. Q: Something that nobody ever seems to ask! How do you clean/maintain your brushes and other equipment? -Tabby the princess with claws

A: Preserve! Even if I'm gonna sculpt over the neck, I want the extra security and the guideline for placement.
Q: Is there a custom you'd like to make, but haven't because you feel like the idea has been done too many times before?

This is my standard M.O., and it's worked well for me. When I've made a mistake or changed my mind about something on the top layer, I've been able to go back up to almost a week later and clean the paint off with a stiff brush and some pink soap and no damage done to the sealed coats below.

The Fashion Styles don't have the blunt eye molds underneath, fortunately!
That makes this even more impressive. I would die if I had to freehand the eye placement on a pony. -Tabby the princess with claws

No swirls around her head, but maybe a tiny one at the outer corner of one eye.

If we're talking about any generation other than G4, I can totally help with the baiting, and given our relative locations (I'm in Tucson) I might be a cheaper shipping option than others. Drop me a line if you're interested. -Tabby the princess with claws

I also use watered-down Folk Art, but find that "ze magics" tends not to last very long with it. I can only paint for a short while before it starts clumping.

Nylon is way easier than animal fiber. Stick it in warm/hot Rit, let it soak until you like the color, and you're done. Alternately, pour warm/hot dye over it, repeat until you like the color, and you're done. No prep, no post.

That is really impressive, reinterpreting the character on a pony base like that.
To seal the signature without smudging it, get yourself a spray sealant. I and most of the other folks on here will recommend Testors Dullcote.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login Ten's hair isn't too dissimilar from your icon's, so I'll tell you exactly how I did it: I started by rerooting his entire mane in full-length hair and getting it wet. Then I brushed it all forward and twisted it upward as if I was starting a bun. When all of the hair along his neck was rolled up but not twisting back on itself, I coated the hair between his shoulders and neck with Mod Podge and let it dry. I let all of the hair that had fallen in front of his ears hang free, and left it flopped over his face for several days. By that time it had 'trained' itself to hold the position it's in now, and I just cut off all the excess and left him with the pompadour. Hope that helps! -Tabby the princess with claws

A big "yes" on making the TARDIS' hair metallic. Metallic and sparkly! Love the others, too, especially Rarity. And I really like that you gave Fluttershy her 'proper' hairstyle. -Tabby the princess with claws

Short for 'custom bait,' as in a pony that's so old and ragged and gross that it drags you in like a fishing lure and compels you to customize it. -Tabby the princess with claws
