Off Topic / Re: Americans, are you doing Thanksgiving?
« on: December 14, 2021, 12:20:04 PM »
yeah so many hand drawn turkeys and, in hindsight, unfortunate construction paper hats. a lot of thanksgiving myth back in the 80s and 90s. i don't remember learning much about it until college. maybe in high school? though on some level i think we all knew it wasn't the whole story.

Wow, I didn't remember the paper hats until you mentioned it lol. My school did a lot more painting than paper, and despite the unfortunate art projects, I think most of our teachers accepted that all the kids cared about was the days off from school! Ah, November was so sweet - every Friday off except 1.

Pony Corral / Re: Can anyone tell me about this pony?
« on: December 13, 2021, 09:34:57 AM »
Yes, that's Junko Mizuno. She was a SDCC exclusive, but later extras were sold online, which is how I got mine ^_^

If I recall correctly, the pony released at SDCC was actually an adaptation of a pony by the manga artist Junko Mizuno which was featured at an event where celebrities designed their own pony to be auctioned for charity.

Original version by Junko Mizuno:

There's also links on that page to other pony designs done for the auction, if you're curious.

oh, no, that's so sad. I feel bad for her family. :(

I use that site all the time. Is there any word on what will happen to it?

Off Topic / Re: Do you have a fireplace?
« on: December 13, 2021, 09:27:45 AM »
We have a fireplace, but we never used it. Neighbors moved in upstairs and started using theirs, and because our apartments are stupidly constructed, the smoke from their chimney gets sucked back down into our fireplace and into our house, so we've done our best to block up our fireplace so that stops happening >.<

Man, I remember in grade school Thanksgiving was such a big production, like they laid it on heavy with the myth and all. These days we just gather with family and have a meal. Though, we didn't the last two years because of covid, it was just my husband and I. Still, any excuse to eat a lot lol! I made a pecan pie.

I watch scary movies, hand out candy if people come (no one does, we live outside town), decorate the place, and traditionally bake pumpkin stew and pumpkin pie.

As a kid, our decorations were only a xmas tree, but my husband and i like to have lights up in our windows now, too, and a wreath on our door.

Customs / Re: Opinions on choosing a base!
« on: December 13, 2021, 09:18:49 AM »
I would paint a white pony to match Leaper's color, but not everyone likes the full repaint look... if that's a deal-breaker for you, I would buy the green bait rather than trying to dye a bait - I know lots of people do it, but I live in a humid climate and I've stopped using dye because it tends to leak and slowly stain...

Customs / Re: Custom Twinkle Eye help?
« on: December 13, 2021, 09:15:30 AM »
I did twinkle eyes on one of my customs before. This might be more work than you want to do, but I carefully cut out the pupil and iris of the base pony, then pushed the gem into place from the inside of the pony's head, securing it with duct tape or glue.

Let me go find the result:

Aww, she's cute! I love the bandana and earring!

Oh, good point lol. The Lego Imperial Flagship has some barrels on it, maybe the rum is in there.

Any other piratey ponies to join the pillaging?

Customs / Re: Let's talk about bait
« on: May 22, 2021, 10:41:32 AM »
I will only customize G1 if they are in poor shape - Sharpie marks, stains, etc - or if they are common. I have a big box of super baity G1s to pull from. I have used ones that are in fair to good condition before, but only if they were common.

I'm a little more flexible with G3, although not recently since Hasbro doesn't make them anymore.

My rule was that with my own ponies I can do whatever, but if I'm buying from a seller, I need to respect the value they place on what they're selling. So, I wouldn't customize say an uncommon pony that the seller is clearly intending to go to a collector, as opposed to be baited. Plenty of sellers sell bait ponies by lot, so that's not necessary anyway.

Lately I've tried to used the HQG1C blanks for customs. I don't collect other gens than G1 and G3.

Customs / Re: Have you ever given up on a bait?
« on: May 22, 2021, 10:35:19 AM »
I've never given up on a bait entirely, but I have sweated, cursed, cramped, and cut myself trying to get those necks and hair loose.

What has helped a bit is to always, just always, boil the pony before starting to do anything to it. Don't wait to find out if you need to. Just do it.
