Pony Corral / Re: Painted/stained shelves and displaying toys
« on: August 02, 2022, 12:22:58 AM »
In the past I had light pine shelves with a clear type coat stain that were bought from stores (very long wall shelves bought in the late 90's). I didn't have ponies on them, but other plastic and PVC type toys and doll boxes. I never experienced the shelf staining transfer to the toys, however I did have a couple toys transfer color/sticky to the shelf. This was more than likely due to being left in one place for very long periods of time without being moved (months at a time and if removed to dust returned to the same place, and they stayed that way for years), as well as the toy itself had started to get sticky/tacky in addition to not being in an air conditioned house.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, I would stay clear of any contact paper or plastic shelf liners (depending on material and flexibility) because your putting different plastics with more plastics and the softer a plastic is the more plasticizer it has.

lol did 80s parents just hate Care Bears?

Yup, the parents had it in for them, they were tired of hearing "Care Bears Stare!"....just kidding.   :P
I think it's more that by the time the late 80's and early 90's came they viewed we were "beyond that age" of the Care Bears. The toys and other products started to come out in 1983, and the TV series ran from 1985 to 1988, and there was 3 films. Target audience was really young kids, so parents viewed we had "moved on" to other toys and tv shows.

The Care Bears were created by Those Characters From Cleveland (TCFC), the licensing division American Greetings (same makers of Strawberry Shortcake). There was so much Care Bear merchandise and products. I still can't go through boxes of random stuff at my parents house without finding something Care Bears here and there. Go up in the kitchen cabinets on the top shelf all the way in the back (you know, those cabinets you can't reach without a step stool and no one goes up there)... there it is, Care Bear plastic cups. Go up in the top of the linen cabinet, there are pillowcases. Open a random box of stuff, yup, there is a greeting card. Go out in the garage and start going through boxes, yup there it is a Care Bear key chain. I realize that I may be the odd exception here since my parents have lived in the same house for almost 40 years, and my mother tends to hold on to things.

At this point in time though, the Care Bears have been brought back so many times over the years. They were brought back in 1991, 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2019.

Off Topic / Re: Have you ever been in a natural disaster?
« on: July 31, 2022, 11:09:21 PM »
They are frequent here, like I said, since we live along the ring of fire, so most of us don't worry if it's an M 4 or below. Once it picks up above that, you should watch out for a sec, see if it'll actually progress 🤣

So true, I'm in California, and usually it's just like "Oh, an earthquake....no big deal" for the smaller ones. There is always that momentary question sometimes though of "Wait, it's still going..." or "getting a bit stronger this time... maybe I should start heading for some cover".

I have been evacuated for wildfires once or twice when I have been in the local mountains at my grandparent's cabin (about 5,000 feet elevation - about a 30-45minute drive to the bottom of the mountain) however that was more of a recommended voluntary evacuation than mandatory at the point we left as the fire was above where we were and fires will typically burn up a mountain not retreat down, but wind can shift them quickly. My aunt did have a close call though about 4 years ago, same area where the cabin was, where a fire was started along the base of the mountain and various points on the roadway up (it was arson, they did catch him) and the fire went up the mountainside and the planes dropped water/fire retardant to try and make break lines like they usually do to try and contain an area. The firefighters made a stand at the edges of the small town and were able to keep it /turn it away from the main part. Her street was fine, but the houses on the street behind her they couldn't save and half of them were burned. I went up for a visit about a month afterwards and the entire mountainside was streaked black (from the burn) or red (the retardant). It was eerie.

The Dollhouse / Re: Matches for headswaps?
« on: July 31, 2022, 10:44:24 PM »
Hi guys! I need some help. I am making a custom project where I am creating dolls of Ariels sisters. However, I dont like the disney bodies, the legs feel tacky and dont bend, even the ones with bendable knees cant sit without spreading their legs far too much to wear a tail.

It is a rather annoying thing how the hip joint sockets are made in the Disney Store dolls. Even the extra jointed ballerina style ones have that.

My first question is which Ariel doll are you using as your reference skin tone?
My second question is what are you using for the heads of the sisters?

In general, Barbie dolls will typically always have a slightly tanner skin tone than Ariel/Disney Store dolls. Some of them can get close, however there still is just a shade difference. Which Raquelle doll was it, the "Life in the Dreamhouse" version or a different one?

Pony Corral / Re: G1 Petite Ponies Question
« on: July 30, 2022, 06:42:18 PM »
Petite prices can fluctuate wildly depending on condition and who is buying at the time. Petite hair can really frizz badly, and the symbols rub off if you look at them funny. Certain ponies are harder to find in good condition, and they can command premium prices in perfect condition.

Thanks for all the great information, it was very helpful. I actually found 5 of them and a stamp today unexpectedly at a swap meet. I found 3 of the set one ponytail ponies, another ponytail from set 3 and the orange w/ seashell Pretty 'n Pearly Pony (also got a Bow Tie stamp, missing the bottom ink part). All in fairly good shape as far as symbols/paint just dirty.

You said that "the symbols rub off if you look at them funny" would you recommend only cleaning them with water and a cloth, because they are pretty dirty (play grime / storage dirt - the kind you can "feel" when you pick up old played with toys). I'm assuming water won't hurt the pearl coating.

I just realized today when looking across mommy charm type items on the mylittlewiki that I donated a McDonald's MLP bookmark a couple years ago without even realizing it. We were cleaning out my parents garage (think hoarder level of mess/clutter) and when I saw the bookmarks on the wiki today I remembered seeing a pink pony bookmark just like those in a box of random cheap stationary type stuff (pencils, pens, notepads, old shaped erasers (stuff we used to get in our Xmas stockings), etc. Oh well.

What have you thrown out (or donated) and realized it later?

Pony Corral / G1 Petite Ponies Question
« on: July 27, 2022, 09:34:37 PM »
I decided about a week ago that I might start collecting petite ponies, but before I do I was wondering a couple things.

1) Which ones / sets are the most common?
2) Who / What set are the rarest or most expensive?
3) What range is a fair price for your average single petite pony?

A number of cute things there, but ouch on the price. Way too much for a pair of pj's, even after converting to USD ($100 AUD = about $70 USD)

She was a childhood pony, I remember picking her out at the store while on vacation. I hated her tinsel hair as a kid very quickly after opening her up, so I braided both her mane and tail and they have been left that way ever since.

Pony Corral / Re: How do you decide what to add to your collection?
« on: July 21, 2022, 10:46:28 AM »
I only have been buying G1's from an indoor swap meet for the most part. So for me this basically comes down to two things, condition and cost. I'm not buying duplicates at this point, so if I have a decent one already, I am not likely to spend money on a duplicate pony (maybe if it was absolutely perfect I might think about it for an upgrade)

1) Condition -
Is the pony basically okay? Anything major visibly wrong (tail rust, mold, etc)? Has the hair been chopped? Do I think I can get the marks off and are the marks in areas that are not that obvious or hidden by hair?

I tend to stand there for quite some time looking them over, running the hair through my fingers (it's a texture thing - checking for washing, products used in it, or if it feels like original unwashed played with toy), inspecting hair plugs and tails looking for rust and mold. If the pony has mold or major signs of rust or a lot of bad marks or a hair cut it goes back on the shelf. I just don't have the time or energy to be able to spend fixing major issues at this point, and also some lack of know how or confidence that I could fix it.

2) Cost
Assuming that the pony is basically okay, or just a little dirty the question comes down to cost.

How much is it being sold for, and how much cash is currently in my purse when I am there. Having to choose the best ponies of the ones you want because you only have so much money with you. Which to be honest is probably not a bad thing because rather than "OMG I want them all!" it's more of a "Okay....who do I REALLY want to take home today." because otherwise they would all just come home to be rescued.

I like him, I just picked him up about two weeks ago. He doesn't have any accessories, but that's okay. Now I have three big brother ponies (I also have Steamer & Wigwam). :)

I have him. I was able to get him and Wigwam at a swap meet back in 2018. They were the first big brother ponies that I ever saw in person and had to buy them. They don't have any accessories, but neither do any of the other ponies I have picked up pre-owned. Steamer's hair has faded to white but that's okay I think the white hair looks good on him.

I would like to have her. I was able to get a Baby Love Melody a couple years ago and I think they would look nice as a set.

Pony Corral / Re: Worst thing to clean in your collection?
« on: July 20, 2022, 09:34:55 PM »
Worst pony to clean:
Very tangled Brush N Grow ponies that still have a working mechanism. I bought five of them back in 2018 (swap meet finds) and one of them I still have not washed and de-tangled the hair. Poor Twisty Tail, her body got cleaned but not her hair. She just lays on a box in our office waiting for a trip to the spa (she tends to fall over, so at this point I have just laid her over).

Playsets:
ROOFS! Always the roofs, all the rows and rows of scalloped edge shingles (MLP Nursery for example), and I'm not just talking about MLP either. My Strawberry Shortcake Berry Happy Home from the 80's has all those little bumps too. In the last year or so I dug out our old Fisher Price stuff and the same thing....all those darn molded roofs. Darn you 80's toys for trying to be authentic with those details.

Pony Corral / Re: How to transport a flutter pony?
« on: July 20, 2022, 09:16:27 PM »
I have never transported a flutter pony with her wings in.

However, I have moved a LOT of delicate Ariel, The Little Mermaid ceramic and glass statues, snow globes, figurines, etc...with her arms and tail going everywhere with loads of intricate sculpted pieces. Tissue paper and bubble wrap are literally my best friends for moving. So if I was going to apply the same method to a flutter pony, basically, you would crumple up tissue paper into a nice fluffy pile/ball (not crunched tight, loose and fluffy crumpled pile) to support between the wings, and underneath each wing (3 fluffy balls to start, one under each wing and one in the middle). Then I would continue crumpling tissue paper all the way around the pony gently packing in pieces until I had a nice tissue paper ball. At the point I feel the ball is secure enough, then I wrap the whole thing a couple times over with bubble wrap. At that point it either went into a box with Styrofoam peanuts, or that whole bundle gets wrapped in a towel and packed in a box with other items (using the towel as buffers between wrapped bundles). This method has worked for me through two moves. You do use a lot of materials though. The last thing though is that I NEVER let the movers take my collections. Those go in the car with me. We have only made small moves though, so multiple car loads over a week or so verses a out of state or cross country move.
