The Dollhouse / Weird tan lines on odette?
« on: March 24, 2017, 05:10:12 PM »
Hey folks!

So I found a 1994 Tyco swan princess odette doll at savers, and she came in her original dress, which is really neat! While undressing her, I noticed she er....has some discoloration issues going on.

As you may notice, her neckline is.....orange? it's considerably darker than her face and the rest of her body, which makes it look like she has a strange tan line :P In addition, her arms and legs look pretty pale in comparison to the rest of her body. I presume that's from a difference in plastic materials (they're rubbery while the torso is hard plastic) and dye leeching over the years or something.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? If I display her in her dress, it's not really noticeable, but I'd like to try to restore her if I can.

edit: Here's some pictures with flash so you can see the arms better.

I actually saw these exact ponies today. They were in something called "ponies in a jar" sold in the discount section of Target.

edit: I just saw an earlier comment that said the same thing. im sorry;;

Bubbles is one of my childhood G1 ponies!  ^.^Her tail was lost a really long time ago, but I made a replacement one with a pretty close-matching clip-in hair extension. I love the little white mark on her face--super unique!-

I rapidly amassed a collection of G4s when I first started collecting--They were readily available, and a nice small size--good for stuffing as many as possible onto shelves :P

However, most of my G4s are stuffed in a bin under my bed right now. I started picking up G1s on craigslist and I just love that there are so many poses and unique characters---I only have 2 or 3 G1 duplicates, but about 12 pinkie pies, 5 twilight sparkles, 4 rainbow dashes, etc. I have thought about selling off my collection gradually--I'll keep some of my favorites, but it's just hard for G4 to hold a candle to G1's appeal. They got a bit too repetitive for a while with the mane six and the same poses over and over.

edit: also...my childhood ponies were secondhand G1s, so I have a bit of a nostalgic bias :P

I was sorted into hufflepuff when I first joined pottermore ages ago, and my wand is Maple wood with a Unicorn hair core 13 ¾" and Rigid flexibility. :> I was very excited about the unicorn hair LOL

I only have two SHS sisters--one from childhood, and one I found at a thrift store.

Sweet sundrop was actually my older sister's pony and she was pretty firm about not letting me dye her hair back pink, since she likes the white better  (she's not a pony collector). The symbol rub is my fault--I was scrubbing at a bad stain with a magic eraser and took some of it off. Actually, I joined mlp arena in the first place because we found her in the basement and someone on here was making repro shs earrings ages ago. obviously it didn't work out, since the old broken one is still there.

Lovin' kisses 's lipstick doesn't really work anymore, but i'm ok with that. I just wish it looked less like she had a fruit punch mustache :P

As someone with self-admitted hoarding tendencies, I can definitely see where both you and your husband are coming from. I love the excitement of finding new ponies and fixing them up, but I have a LOT of hobbies and a lot of things that I collect and I spend too much money on them instead of on practical things. My room has gotten entirely out of my control with how much stuff I have, so it's a valid worry that possessions can possess you. Even still, getting rid of ALL of them because he doesn't like them seems unreasonable.

I'm not sure what the case may be for you, but in my case my rapid collecting binges are my unhealthy way of dealing with stress and depression. It may help to take a step back and avoid spending on ponies for a while and examine why you collect them and how many you really need, and how much you're willing to spend on them. Sometimes, looking at how much space and money your collection takes up puts into perspective whether or not you need to take a break or start selling parts of it off. Try to have a calm heart to heart with your husband (if he is indeed just a bit upset and not getting violent--in which case, that's another story altogether), preferably with a marriage counselor or therapist involved. I'd hate to see things go sour. :(

I hope everything is ok, and that you two figure things out soon!

Pony Corral / Two quick questions about fixing pony hair!
« on: February 27, 2017, 07:43:19 PM »
Hey folks!

So I've been finding some slightly beat-up G1s at thrift stores and through craigslist to restore, so naturally I need to fix some issues with hair and tails :P

My twilight is missing her tail. I've been meaning to order a replacement from dollyhair, but I've never ordered from there before so I'm not sure what color would be a good match.

The site suggests virgin snow for most ponies with white hair, but hers has a warm touch to it that looks slightly yellowish. I was thinking maybe marshmallow or white witch...? What do you guys think?

Also, I found two flutter ponies at the thrift store the other day--morning glory and forget-me-not. I think they were owned by the same person and stored together because forget-me-not's hair is stained with what looks suspiciously like the highlighter-yellow color of morning glory's hair. :P

In her case, I was wondering if those spots could somehow be bleached without destroying the hair, or if I need to rehair her altogether. Any pony hair experts out there?

Thanks for looking!

What a cutie! I love your story, and I'm glad it got a home. If a tree service person got to him before you, he might have ended up in the trash! :( I remember I used to see someone's baby doll stuck up a tree near my old apartment complex. There were a lot of kids in the area, so i'm sure someone did it as a prank to a sibling or something. One day I resolved to actually get her down, but she was gone.  Someone must have got to her before me!

I haven't really done rescues of stuffed animals, but I did try brushing out my favorite childhood plush, a Labrador retriever named shadow. She was my constant companion, so she's taken a lot of rides in the washing machine and had slight matting. :P I used a dog hair brush on her that I bought for brushing out yarn and it worked fairly well at making her look fluffy again!  Plus, the process somehow made the trapped laundry soap smell escape and now she smells like nice and clean. It's quite nice, actually!

My eyes are....hm. Well.

EVERYONE in my family, including extended family, has glasses. All of them. Everyone has bad eyesight in one way or another.  My mom, her father, and I are distinctly farsighted. I had reading glasses once as a child, but I barely wore them and they just sat in a drawer for years. I'm kind of fussy when it comes to having things on my face or head, and glasses are one of them.

Somewhat recently I noticed my vision getting noticeably worse with focusing on things, especially if it's small font (probably because I spend so much on time on computers/staring at small text at work). Turns out I have slight astigmatism and farsightedness, but it only really affects me when I'm looking at a screen or a book or something. Even still, I don't wear my glasses like I should--I've been glasses-less for so long that wearing them makes my head hurt, so I don't put them on. And now that my new job involves staring at a screen or flipping through giant tomes of text all day, I think it's getting worse.

Long story short, I don't, but I probably should.
