There’s an older thread on here with some info on the effects of hydrogen peroxide vs benzoyl peroxide. As I understand it, benzoyl bleaches dyes (like the ones used to tint pony plastic! So it should NEVER be used on ponies) but hydrogen peroxide does not. I found Far Dreamer’s comments in this thread especially helpful. She runs the My Little Pony Preservation Project and from what I’ve seen goes out of her way to be very thorough in her research on pony restoration methods.

Here’s the thread! http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,396568.msg1787905.html#msg1787905

Good news for you, Ponyrama, MLPs are made from vinyl! I think mainly the plastics people are worried about weakening tend to be ones that are prone to being more brittle, or plastics that start out hard. Good rule of thumb with toys, if the plastic feels squishy it’s probably vinyl, if it feels more hard it’s likely to be something called ABS plastic. Think the texture of a pony vs that of a Dream Castle!

Another fun science fact that might ease your mind - hydrogen peroxide is also the active ingredient in Oxy Clean, which is widely recommended as safe for giving ponies a good deep clean, and, as far as I know, has been for quite some time.

I find it FUN how much science goes into toy restoration myself! Sometimes it feels very mad scientist. Only the creature on the slab is very cute and rainbow.

What is that cream you are talking about? My Twinkler who used to be a beautiful dark purple has turned brown :(. I would love it if I could get her back to her original color!

I think they are talking about hydrogen peroxide. The cream that hairdressers use to make blonde hair. I use the 40 volume one and on my ponies I have had good results.

Yup, that’s the stuff! Fading yellowed or stained plastic under sun or UV light is called sun fading in the pony community and retrobrighting pretty much everywhere else. People use this process to de-yellow everything from toys, to vintage computer and game system parts, or even collectible Nike shoes. You can find lots of helpful tutorials on building a UV light box on YouTube, and there’s even a Wikipedia page for retrobrighting. If you want to see some lovely results of this process, check out @makingponiespretty on Instagram. Plenty of other folks use it too! I’d be really interested to see if it helps your Twinkler.

@Blackcurtains, all these compliments are activating my inner archivist!

i saw someone on instagram that had a discolored MO star hopper and they used the cream and UV and it went back to her original color. Maybe try a small spot on her foot to see if it works?

I really like that idea! I still need to order lights and set up a sun fading box but when I do I’ll post an update. Any chance you remember who on Instagram posted that? I’d love to see how it went for them.

Thank you all for the info! Ponyfan, I think my Twinkler is that darker color and I just thought that was the color she was supposed to be. Which kind of makes me consider IF I want to sun fade golden Napper. Is it more fun to have examples of their color variety in my collection? Still kind of leaning towards fading her since I bought her thinking she was full of rust, but it’s something to consider.

Ponybookworm, I LOVE your different names for your two Nappers. So cute!

For Trade / Re: I've got A LOT to trade!

Sent you a PM because I have some things from your wanted list. Where can I see what you have to trade?

I saw the pony you mean. Would posting a screenshot be ok? I agree that’s a steep price for a restoration experiment. Not in my budget but maybe someone else’s, for science? I’ve seen developer cream fix some pretty intense yellowing and I’m almost surprised to learn it hasn’t been tried on a sparkle pony, unless we know it’s exposure to sun that causes these plastic batches to discolor in the first place.

The other funny thing is the custom blind bag versions of Sparkle ponies currently on Etsy that the artist intentionally gave the same mismatch.

If they genuinely smell like US ice cream, remind me if I ever go over there to avoid your ice cream like the plague.

Don't worry.  The only Sundae Best pony in my childhood herd was Coco Berry/Chocolate Chip.  Even then I don't remember thinking that she smelled like ice cream.  I have Sherbet/Sorbet Surprise now also and although she seems to still be slightly scented it's more of a vanilla/general sweet scent to me.

Ponyfan

I mean, to avoid it melting under hot set lights, prop ice cream can be made of things like silicone squeezed through a piping tip…so that kid in the ad comparing the two could be onto something. Don’t worry about US ice cream. I grew up with a scented pony (Sugar Apple, still faintly scented after all these years!) and I have to say she smells more like shampoo, though I don’t know if they used the same scent on all ponies.

Thank you goddessofpeep! Kind of wonder how I never heard of this before, as I have almost a full set of these guys! Does treating them with developer cream/UV or sunfading help? Has anyone tried it?

Also, thank you Leave A Whisper, for saying they look cool together. If I can’t change Napper’s color, I can at least appreciate it as a fun variation! She’s not browned, she’s golden. Like California grass in the summer. 😂

I recently got a mail order Napper who looked very dark, and I expected I’d have to pop her head off and start scrubbing rust out of her insides. Open opening her up, however, I found that her interior is extremely rust free and very clean. So why is she a completely different color from my store Napper, and honestly most other MO Nappers I've seen pictures of?

Is the plastic yellowed, and would sun fading help, or does this particular pony just tend to have a wide variety of tones depending on where and when it was produced? Of course I know these are two different versions, but I didn't know there was this amount of color variation between them. I know I’ve seen Star Hoppers that range from minty to emerald. Is it the same thing?

Princess Tiffany uses the same slightly different Applejack mold, so it must just be for ponies with 3D symbols like Ponyfan said, though honestly I’m not certain. Her face is…long! It looks like the sculpts of some of the other princes ponies are subtly different as well.

I prefer some of the 3D symbol sculpts. I’m not fond of Moondancer’s pose with her overly short torso, (though you can tell her proportions seem based on the collector’s pose, which also has a shorter torso than most g1s) but Princess Misty’s revamped version of that sculpt evens her proportions out! If HQG1C made a version of Princess Misty’s pose without a 3D cutie mark, I’d love it, and I’d commission custom versions of Moondancer and Sugar Sweet right away.

Replied to your PM with info on the store I’m talking about! It says they do ship worldwide on their website, so don’t hesitate to give them a call and get those cute ponies!

I’ll keep my eye on this thread because I’m wondering about g1 tinsel myself. Just got a Napper with lovely hair who really needs her insides cleaned, but her head has never been removed. I guess I could wrap up her hair and carefully pour hot water over neck seam before moving to acetone?

Hope this isn’t too derail-y!

Best of luck! But if you can’t find the ones you sold, what’s your budget for buying a new set? A vintage toy store near me has a bunch of pearly babies on display right now but I think they’re each $50.

Ladymoondancer, thank you for the reassuring words!

I have ANOTHER pony head glue question. On ponies who are less squishy than they once were, are there any special beheading tips beyond acetone?

My first pony was Beachball, who my mom put in our mailbox as a surprise for me when I was a little kid.

Today, mail order Napper came in the mail!
