Pony Corral / Re: Show me your alternate-coloured rehairs!

i feel rather simple with my new rehair:

i got a beachball with close to no hair and decided to rehair her. they are hery symbols colors but lighter and the white stripe glows in the dark!
sadly i missed to show the blue stripe on the first picture, but you can see it on the second.
of course, in each color are at least 4 different nyloncolors. ;)
to me she looks really tanned now, like hula hula. ;) my other beachball is lighter and not so intense pink as the rehaired one.
It's so subtle but so beautiful! :whoa: I love it!!

how much do you charge for a rehair?
$20 for a basic straight or brushed-and-poofy style, and $30 for anything heavily styled (like for an on-model mane 6 hairstyle or the curled Pinkie or Ringlet in this thread). +$5 on either of those if I'm providing the pony, and shipping separate. I don't have an official commission thread or anything open right now, but I'm ok to take a few.
hmmm that's pretty good. how much extra for a dyed gradient?
been trying to do a custom of my oc pony (sig pic) but haven't had time or the knowhow to make it puffy like that.
I could definitely do that! There's a special acrylic-compatible dye I've been wanting to try on yarn (normal RIT doesn't take to acrylic), which I could use for this. I'll note you options & specifics!

Pony Corral / Re: Has anyone seen this G4 before?

Eurgh, the eye shape isn't that bad at all, but they did a really weird job with printing it. If only they pushed the pupil just a little bit more to the edge...

If it's a new head sculpt entirely, at least I think it holds promise for customs and repaints.

Thank you so much for posting this, I am definitely going to try it as well! But I had a question... can I rehair the pony without brushing the yarn out individually and then brush it out once the whole head is rehaired? Just wondering!
I've been experimenting with that lately because I've been trying to cut down on time! Unfortunately, while it DOES work (just make sure you have your roots glued before brushing), it does tend to give slightly different results, which I don't find as nice... for the brushed-out poofy style, brushing the yarn all at once tends to make the waves straighter and more "fused together", so you don't have really nice defined wavy hair like you would otherwise. If you straighten it after that, it's almost impossible to get the hair straightener right up against the head, so you wind up with kind of frizzy roots. Either way seems to result in shorter fiber, too, by about 1/2", because I think you get more fiber loss. You still need to kind of do it in small sections anyway, otherwise the brush and hair straightener just can't handle it.

It DOES work, though, and I am very picky for quality, so take all that with a grain of salt. I think I wound up saving about half an hour in time (where a normal straightened reroot will take almost 2 hours), so it's a bit of a trade-off.

Customs / Re: plushie swap - new interest thread
« on: July 17, 2013, 12:24:56 AM »
I'd be really interested! OCs & ponysonas would be fine to work with, as long as they're not waaay off-the-wall complex... let's say, stick to "hasbro-style" levels of complexity for anything you suggest. :P

It might work if the plushies people contributed were sorted according to time spent working on them?... since there are soooo many styles of plushies, from tiny little chibi things to huge FiM-style on-model creations. So, you could enter under the 8-hour, 12-hour, etc. categories. If you enter under the 8-hour category, you could make 8 mini plushies that take you an hour to sew each, or one big plushie that takes you 8 hours. (roughly!) Or you could make it one time requirement for everyone. It's kind of like a spending limit on shopping swaps... time is money after all. Plus this way, it allows for a lot of leeway with people's styles and preferences of plush-making, and plus nobody should get really shorted with all the work they put in!

Well, they came out looking great! <3

Bumps with updates! This time it's for super-poofy Pinkie curls.

I tried this on a pony of mine and I think I brushed too hard because I had several whole strands come out. It doesn't look like she is bald but I think I could have kept some more of the hair if I hadn't been so enthusiastic.
Eek! Did you glue the hair in place before brushing it? D: Your brand of glue might not be strong enough, or maybe you didn't use enough glue... I've recently been using E6000 instead of Tacky Glue to secure the hair, due to Tacky Glue not being waterproof (found that out the hard way when doing some boil-perms, lol whoops...). I think it's a bit stronger, too. You just need to make sure you REALLY get the roots inside the head saturated!

Customs / 100% waterproof paint?
« on: July 16, 2013, 02:48:05 PM »
Hi guys! I've recently been musing about custom-sculpting a g1-to-g4 Sea Pony, and experimenting with resin-casting them to be 100% waterproof and floatable... An ambitious (and probably long-term) project for me, but I can't stop thinking about it.

My question is, what paints out there can be used on resin (or vinyl, or a similar synthetic), that is 100% waterproof? In my experience, even craft acrylic that's been sealed with "waterproof" sealant will get mushy and peel off if it's been exposed to moisture for too long... Or maybe I should use a different sealant? I want to make something you could feasibly display floating in water (for a not-too-long period of time, like for photo shoots or an art show)!

So cute! Did you airbrush the fbrs, or hand paint them?

[7/31]:
Just finished a reroot commission for mermaid_splash, a microfiber perfume puff style for one of her Fizzys! (Fizzies? lol)

Aside from that I've got a boatload of WIPs going... Until I have more stuff worth posting, I've started a Flickr for my craft and custom stuff, which you can view here! I'm also open for reroot commissions now, yay! My pricing and info is here. Thanks, all!

[7/16]:
I've decided to keep all my custom stuff to one thread since I've felt like I've been spamming too much content lately. XD I'm just making TOO MANY THINGS!

Last night I decided to try some HAIR EXPERIMENTS, and the subject of the evening was Pinkie! I can gladly say... it was a success!

She was rehaired in brushed microfiber yarn quite a while ago, but it still wasn't as totally on-model as I would have liked... and straw curls usually aren't super-tight enough for me to want to use on pinkie. That's why I tried this: mini safety pin curlers!

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I used the super-mini gold safety pins, and used them much like those clip-on foam hair curlers, by first rolling a strip of moistened paper towel onto the safety pin for cushioning, like so:

Then I just rolled small sections of hair onto the safety pins, tightly from tip to root. After that, they got set with boiling water, and she sat in front of a fan to dry for a few hours:

The safety pins and paper towel bits were then removed caaarefully so as to not un-curl the curls, which left her with AMAZINGLY tiny poofy tight curls. <3 A really fun method that I haven't seen anyone do before!

Anyway, hope you like her. :D I should really re-do her cutie mark to be on both sides now, too... (dang it, hasbro.)

[7/15]:
Hooray, my first fully-repainted G4 custom (and second full custom ever)! I've been wanting to do this girl for a while, Ringlet being one of my faaavorite G1s. <3

She's repainted in craft acrylic, rehaired with microfiber, and boil-permed - no product in those lovely curls! They're so light and bouncy... you wouldn't believe it used to be yarn!

I was originally making her to sell, but I think I love her too much... Maaaybe I'll just let her share some space on my desk for a while, haha. :drunk:

30
Were you selling these at the fair? I REALLY wanted the large G4 with white yarn hair she was so pretty but I was out of monies :O

Haha nope, that wasn't me! Neato that you found some other yarn rehairs, though. I wonder if they saw this tutorial or just worked out their own method...
