Customs / Re: How do YOU Rehair?
« on: December 11, 2018, 01:29:28 AM »
Add me to the "would not buy a glued custom" crowd.  Most glue isn't stable long term.  It yellows, it dries out, it cracks, shrinks and changes pH.  I greatly prefer using mechanical methods of fastening hair that don't add yet another potential source of chemical damage to an already unstable material like vintage vinyl.   I want my customs to last for many decades, not mere months or years.

Off Topic / Re: Meet your new Princess - Update: TOYS & TRAILER

I watched all the currently available episodes in one sitting.  On the whole, I'm quite happy with how the series was handled.  I think my only real complaint is that there are some very obvious animation errors and miscolors in certain frames, and some of the infills look wonky.  Pretty minor on the whole.  And maybe I'm still not sold on Swiftwind's new incarnation but we'll see - he didn't exactly get a lot of speaking lines until the last couple of episodes.

The character depth and development is great, everyone is pretty relatable and unique enough to stand out without being overbearingly annoying.  I wouldn't mind seeing one or two more male characters with speaking parts.  I really enjoy the tension between Adora and Catra.  Having grown up together and being best friends, practically siblings, gives Adora a very good reason to not just smite her nemesis outright which was sorely lacking in the original series.  I love Entrapta, I think she's my favourite out of all of them.

MLP Nirvana / Re: Brown argie Blue Belle??!

If there's multiples like this, could be a batch of plastic that's aging badly.  If the degradation is light or oxygen driven, a pony that was standing on her hooves most of the time would have paler feet while one that wasn't would be a more even colour all over.  It's strange that it would affect the hair too, though.  Most interesting!

I would guess the ends melted? Maybe look at them under a magnifying glass and see if that doesn't give you more information.  The tips probably dry out the fastest which makes them more prone to excess heat.  If frizzy they may already be more spread out too, which again will result in more heat hitting any individual strand.

Well, there are plenty of things that can stain without being specifically dye.  Maybe Bluebelle took a 'bath' in mom or dad's coffee?  Kids can be very ... creative.

I haven't tried working with McD ponies, but their hair is definitely lower quality than any of the store-bought toys (maybe with the exception of the worst G4's) so I'd be extra cautious with them.  It might not even be nylon; if it is, it's the cheapest kind out there.  Stuff seems to frizz the second you so much as look at it.

And keep the hair wet.  It MUST be wet and/or full of conditioner, otherwise it can burn and melt.

Rule #1: Do not trust the marked settings on your curling iron.  It won't be accurate enough.  Even the same model may vary from unit to unit.  Until you get a feel for your particular one, start low and work your way up.  I don't have any concrete numbers for you, sorry. :c

If you need to set a hairstyle, boil it.  I wouldn't blow dry; not hot enough to help, and all that fast air is likely to mess up the style in the process.

It could be discolouration from something airborne.  That would pretty evenly affect all the areas except the roots / base of the tail.  Or maybe she was buried in a sandbox / dirt for a long time?

I used to bury my Playmobil in the sandbox so I could 'discover' them - there's probably a few still out there...

While I'm no expert on Nirvana releases, that pony looks heavily discoloured to me.  She resembles some of my early dye attempts where I dunked the whole pony, hair and all.  Base of the tail and mane roots look to be closer to a more normal purple?

A basic slot-head screwdriver of the appropriate thickness works too.
I don't use the keys even though I have them because they're rather fragile.  Sometimes you can also open SSP's simply by bumping the saddle to the side. Depends on how worn out they are.

I use two pairs of needle nose pliers to sort of uncurl the metal clamp when necessary.  Clamps are not much fun to remove but they can be defeated with proper application of force.

Customs / Re: ADORABLE Custom Pony artist

Wow, a custom pony that *isn't* pooping a whole hank of hair?  Colour me impressed.  The eyes aren't overdone either, and not a rhinestone to be seen, plus symbols on both sides from the looks of things.  I don't usually like customs because they look so weird compared to genuine MLP but that's one tempting artist.

Edit: After checking out the instagram, can definitely say the artist's style suits the G4 reboot style better than Hasbro's original designs do.  Very nice work!

I've also had one or two CC's that looked like this, so yet another vote for 'factory variation'.  She's one of the prolific ponies when it comes to batch differences, and given the volume and number of years over which Cotton Candy was released it's not too surprising.

Pony Corral / Re: G2 playsets - how rare are they?
« on: November 15, 2018, 04:10:55 PM »
Not very helpful, but I don't think either of those were released in Canada.  So up here at least, 'pretty darn rare'.  Obviously more common in the European countries that had more prolific G2 releases.  I haven't seen either come up for sale often though.
