Adoptables / Re: Shai's Adoptables: Rose-Border Pony - OPEN! *pick ups*
« on: September 25, 2015, 04:26:58 PM »
If I'm not too late, I'd adore one of these! :D Lovely, lovely artwork. (Mango!) If I didn't make the cut, no worries!

*What pony: Princess Starlily; link to ref in sig (unicorn base, please)
*What colour of the roses, leaves and border? Kind of like Mimic's border. Pale pink roses (see pink sparkles in Starlily's symbol), green leaves, and gold border (not too saturated, but definitely gold, like Ivaness' adopt). :)
*Facing left or right? Right (like in your main example)

Oh, and if it's all right, could I have a full-size version, too? I'll only use it on the Arena, and you can PM it to me if you want. ^.^

Thank you so much!

Arts & Crafts Corral / Re: Questions for my artists!
« on: September 24, 2015, 05:34:16 PM »
Great questions! I wish you well in your artistic endeavors. From the guitar I saw you painted, you can definitely be overwhelmed with demand if you advertise in the right places. ^.^

Here's my story...my situation is more of real-life advertising than online, but you can still try it out. You'll find that making personal connections face-to-face really starts up a verbal network amongst people, and before you know it, people who have bought your art will be telling all their friends, and so on.

A little over a year ago, I decided to offer horse and mule portraits to boarders at the stable I rode at. I've always loved colored pencils, so made sure to purchase a set of Prismacolors as quality supplies. To advertise, I opened up Microsoft Publisher and found a tri-fold brochure template and filled it out with pricing and contact information, being sure to add a couple of examples of my work. I printed a stack of these out and tacked them on corkboards outside the stable tack rooms. Since quite a number of people board there, I soon noticed many of the brochures missing and continued to restock. Even though I had included my email and phone number on the brochures, most of my commissions came from people who caught me riding and mentioned face-to-face that they wanted my art.

After several of these commissions, people started asking me if I would do other animals, and one woman even asked about human portraits. While I haven't started those yet, I've expanded my commission business to other pets like dogs and cats. My parents knew how much I was in demand, and my dad mentions my art to friends at work. Also, people who have moved horse stables have asked for me to post my brochures in the new place. I didn't do much at all but make sure my information was in the open for people to take!

As one final note, never, ever, EVER underestimate your work. EVER. I sold my first few commissions, then met my art mentor and told her about my pricing. She shook her head and told her that I was asking far too little; just this July I bumped them up ($50-55 graphite portraits, $75-80 colored pencil, $5 difference depending on paper size (9"x12" or 11"x14"). Honestly, I'm still getting so many requests that I'm considering raising prices again. I only have so much time for art!

Okay, one last thing that I know you'll find invaluable. Pore over this website if you want solid advice on starting to sell your art; it has a PLETHORA of information. The Abundant Artist One of the site creator's biggest pieces of advice is to make yourself a professional website. I plan to do so within the next year; once you have one you can add the address to website profiles and business cards.

Hope this helps! Keep in mind that real-life networking actually works.

God bless,
Starlily

Don't put yourself down! True, all artists should have a critical eye to better their own work, but saying you're no good is going too far. You've obviously had loads of practice and have a natural hand at drawing realistically--that's talent and perseverance that not a lot of people have! Some might say that a work of art's worth is in the eye of the artist, but art is and always will be subjective. There are so many artists whose work I admire, but I don't (well, try not to) put myself down because I am me, and I will eventually develop my own style. :) Plus, those artists are great inspiration and lead me to experiment and continue practicing my craft!

I really don't have any constructive criticism to give, because composition-wise, this is pretty much flawless. I love how beautifully the unicorn fits into the guitar's obscure shape, and the little feather to the right is a nice delicate touch. Keep up the good work! ^.^

She's darling! I love your style; even with a quick sketch you've made her come to life. Beautiful cross necklace, too! My best friend and I have ones that we wear pretty much day-to-day in real life (see my avatar ;) ).

She's darling! ^.^ I seriously love pony watercolor paintings...

I agree with what pretty much everyone else has been saying; especially what Griffin said about adding definition to her hair. Also, if you want the painting's proportions to look like the toy, you can hold out a pencil to measure and compare distances.

You did a great job with control in the details and the shadow on her legs! Keep practicing, and I'm sure you'll go far.

Hi again, everyone! I had to take a long hiatus from the Arena to concentrate on real-life things. :) This year will be pretty busy for me, so don't freak out if I continue to take breaks and miss changing up a few months!

You may already love pony plushies (the cuties completely stuffed with fluff), but there are always a few oddballs that could use some lovin'...which generation or line do you think deserve to be cuddled with more? Personally, I think I could learn to more appreciate the Applause G1 plushies. They kind of make me think of piggie ponies...anyway, I don't own any at the moment, but wouldn't mind welcoming one into the herd. ^.^

Galaxy pony! :D I've always loved customs with a space theme. I love her hair blend--it has just enough color for interest, but doesn't distract from her dark body. About how many hours did you put into her?

If you do decide to sell her, please PM me your asking price!

I love her! She has just enough sparkle to make her look regal. The plume was a really clever idea, too! It's not a common accessory, but suits her perfectly. ^.^

I'm sorry for taking so long, achab! Life has been incredibly busy lately, and a hiatus from the Arena was necessary for me to concentrate on some real-life things. :) If I have time today, I'll try to get them done. Thank you so much for your patience!

Batch 4 is finally done! :D

hilamb, achab1984, and wizzer813, your ponies are under the 'Hasbro ponies' spoiler. :)

Due to a busy school year, these will have to be closed until further notice. Thank you all so much for the requests; I had a lot of fun coloring your ponies. ^.^
